I could, but there is NO way I would pay 30 grand either, jusr the principle of it, I guess I'm too old and having a new car when I already have a reliable one isn't that important to me anymore.
Some friends bought a 13 Hyundai Azera (and it is really nice) but they paid just over 30. The payments have to be over $500 month for 6 years. I'll keep my old vehicles, and keep them clean and maintained and have no payments.

sounds like a good rule of thumb. Put in to practice there is no new car I could buy.

So I think he's alluding to the fact he has little to no mortgage.....
Thanks for the help guys. I'm going and doing some test driving tomorrow so I can for sure determine what I want and then see if i can get them down to the price I want to pay. If not the taurus will stick around a little longer until it needs another repair. Either way I won't be buying til probably the end of the month
Ok daytime crew. I just got back from the dealership. Tell me what you think. Cars msrp is 27495. After The discount i get through my eomployer and rebates it comes down to 23155. True car has it listed at 22853. So I am right on the border there. Finally they are giving me 2500 for my taurus (think i can easily get them up another 500 on that) and then tax title etc comes out just shy of 2k.....if I put 3k down on it i'll owe less than 20k so about 330 a month for a 5 year loan.
This is all for a pretty sweet 13 kia optima as well. That was their first offer to me and honestly...it sounds really good I'm just wondering what other people think if i should try to bring them down or not

You should always try. If your not walking away from the table at least once your leaving some money on it.

I was really really hoping i could get a price of 20k after tradein/tax/title etc. Its down to about 22.5 I'm not sure I could get them that much lower than their initial offer. But He said the 14's were expected to arrive sometime in september. So with that being said. I can wait until end of july or early august when they're trying to clear these out and possibly get under that 20k mark. My only problem is that I want one of 2 colors that kia does not release a lot of due to wanting certain "unique" colors in lesser quantities on the road. And the fact that the taurus may need another hefty repair in that time. With a decent 2-3k downpayment I can have the loan amount be under 20k bringing it to just over 300 a month.
But holy shit did I love this car. I'm trying to choose between the metal bronze and the deep cherry (I'm colorblind so im swinging the girlfriend by later to take a look at the dark cherry.) Although i went in originally wanting a sorento I can get this car for so much cheaper with so many more options. That 3 mile test drive with Air conditioned seats was absolute heaven. Something I'd have to add atleast another 5k to the sorento just to get push to start and vented seats.
I also took a look at the fortes. It is too small for me but I believe it would be a perfect "heres a new car honey" for a spouse. Stripped down its under 20k for msrp and even without a tradein you could probably score a nice fully loaded one for about the 20k mark. I originally thought if i were to get the optima it would be the LX instead of the ex with the ex package because that starts at 27. But bringing that down to the 23 mark and having a trade in on top really surprised me i could have the nice features that one had to offer for such a low price. I will talk it over with my parents and see if the dealership will contact me for a better deal if i hold out on contacting them. I only hope they still have the dark cherry or metalic bronze left when i do buy.
Just to mention the Optima is in the same class and about the same car as the Sonata from Hyundai. That being said I asked about power train as I know someone who has the Optima Hybrid and likes it a lot.
I pondered that as an option, but I did not want to assume...

yes, that's what I meant thanks to recent refi at these low rates. I think it's a good rule of thumb. I'd have to get a new car for 220/month. Doesn't exist. OK by me though.
Sorry my response was confusing.
If it is your first car I would stick with Honda, Toyota and some Fords. Make sure it is a model they produced a lot of like a Corolla or Focus and that way aftermarket parts will be cheap and plentiful. Stay far away from European brands. They are fun to drive but a lot of them use premium gas and will cost you $500 for a small repair. Stay further away from Dodge. Also remember, the price of gas isn't likely to go down. Getting a car with 30 mpg or better will pay off at the pump.
Why?! I won't buy ANYTHING but a Dodge.
I bought my Ram brand new in 2001, and you know how many things have gone wrong, that I've had to fix? How about zero. None. Nil. Zip. Zilch. 140,000 miles now and still runs like the day I bought it. Preventative maintenance and regular oil changes go a long way toward preventing headaches. Have used only Mobil 1 since day 1. Won't use any other oil in any of my cars and my Harley gets Mobil 1 too.
One thing I am glad of is that I grew up with a father who taught me everything there is to know about cars, motorcycles, and turning wrenches. There's nothing on a car or bike I can't fix, and nobody works on my vehicles but me.
I also have a 2012 Charger that is the best damn car I've ever owned. Got 38 miles to the gallon all the way to San Diego last month, and can still peel the damn tires off of the rims if I feel like it. And you can't talk smack on Dodges interiors vs. other manufacturers, like Honda's, Toyota's, and especially Ford's plasticky, cheap, cramped interiors. I like them so much that the Charger and the Ram are even in matching"Bright White", the exact same color code.
My parents also have a Charger, my brother had two Rams, three of my neighbors have Ram's, one also has a 300, and another also has a Caliber, two of my friends have Rams, I have a coworker with a Durango and a Journey, another coworker with a new Grand Cherokee(still dodge), another with a Grand Caravan, and another with the new Dart. Can't think of a single one of them that has had any problems with their vehicles. And that's quite a few Chrysler vehicles I'm directly acquainted with.
Any brand can have lemons and bad quality examples that have slipped through, and anyone can get on the Internet and find tons of complaints on ANY vehicle, but telling someone to avoid an entire manufacturer with no basis behind it is just bad advice.
And BTW, Dodge comes with a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty too, and that stands no matter if you're the first, or the tenth owner.
Wow this thread must have been buried deep before someone revived it.
I bought the 13 optima ex with ex premium package about the 8th of july i believe. It is great. Got it for a little under 20k when all was said and done. I could have waited til september when the 14s came out and got even more off but the taurus was costing me about 400/month in repairs. Financing came out to be 327 and some change. 0% so I've been paying 400 a month and plan to do so until I'm an entire payment ahead and then i'll probably drop down to 350 or so. I know since it's 0% there is really no reason to pay more than the minimum but the thought of all that debt does make me uneasy even though I have the means to pay for it so i'd like to get it down a little bit and maybe get 2-3 payments ahead in case an unlikely circumstance does happen.
If you are looking for a new car the 13 optima is definitely a great one. When the 14's come out in september you could probably get the same one I have for about 17-18 or you could probably score the base model lx for around 15-16. Either way I enjoy it a lot so far.
It is getting me about 26 mpg in rush hour stop and go traffic so thats nice. When i was back home visiting family i took it on some old roads and set the cruise at 45....it was getting around 45 mpg. Upped to about 70 it gets around 30. Great car.

I wrote that because I know lots of people that have problems with their Dodge. Things like the engine blowing at 90 k and stuff like that. Also, take a look at Dodge in Consumer Reports. Those little black circles across the board don't look so good. I will also stay far away from a company that needs Fiat to bail them out. There is a good reason that Fiats were not being sold here for a long time. I think the acronym for Fiat went something like Fix It Again Tony. If you have had good luck with Dodge, count your blessings.
