I haven't heard about this and I'd like to think that if it were true, I'd have heard about it already. Stranger things have happened. I'll do some digging and find out

Yea, it's a bunch of crap. Same old same old. Trot out the kids, and try to infringe on other people's liberty. If the bill doesn't seem like it's getting the positive attention it "deserves", they'll tie online sales to terrorism, whatever the hell that is.

They're too dim to realize black and grey markets get created when taxes get raised above a reasonable level. A luxury tax on tobacco isn't unreasonable imo. An appropriate level would be the sales tax another time again. IOW, if your state has a 6% sales tax, a 12% tax *total* wouldn't be an unreasonable amount. I don't agree with that, but at least a good argument can be made for that tax level. The 80%+ that's on tobacco now isn't reasonable by any stretch of the imagination.

It's been my experience that gov't doesn't want to "ban" anything, their goal is to demonize something just enough to justify taxing or raising existing taxes on a product. It's activists that want to ban products, the problem gets more complicated when activists become the gov't, lol.

Amen to that. Indiana always makes a fortune in revenues, when Illinois raises tobacco taxes. A lot of people that I know make 'smoke runs' to Indiana, plus fill their gas tanks and do other shopping while they're there.

That summarizes CA state gov accurately!

This will probably be passed because it is "for the children".

State tax is now roughly thirteen percent, sales tax higher than most states, property taxes are unreal!

I am very curious if this also (it must) relate to the online sale of cigars.

Cigars online are a huge market way, way beyond smokeless and ECigs for the consumer.

The consumer affected by this law would actually impact the very people who draft such laws in the first place.

My very limited knowledge with cigar "aficionados" is that primarily you are talking about the movie celebrity and wealthy showbiz and mega athletes, and the yacht type consumer.

Tamper with rich people buying their Davidoff Cigars, etc.... online, and I would think you are playing not only with fire but with people who sit down in expensive lounges with $50.00 bourbon shots and whatever.... and have personal contact with lawmakers themselves.

But then again........I don't really know.

                          Dan

Im assuming it would apply to all online tobacco sales.

He must be out of the loop. UPS requires ID to get your package and most online retailers require a credit card.
