    Lent + Snus

I have a pretty modest stash compared to what I assume most of you have, but...

If you could Google image search "What does a Snus User's freezer look like during lent," well... this is what Google would spit back at you.

I'm Catholic, but not giving up snus for Lent. I usually do meat, or caffeine.

I already quit caffeine, so probably doing meat again this year.

Woah, woah, woah, boss. Nobody said anything about giving up snus. I was more or less pointing out the snus in the places meat USED to be.

In my case it would be frozen pizzas. I don't eat much meat. I used to be Catholic, but I got better, and I would never give up anything for no good reason.

I'm Lutheran by default but wife is Catholic and raising kids as such. I go with flow but kids know that whatever traditional religion, if any, they decide to follow is their choice as adults and that having a spiritual connection is most important not the brand of religion.

                  Actually not a bad choice.

“If hope is what keeps you going then this keeps you focused on the future, and this continued focus perpetuates your denial of the Now and therefore your unhappiness”. ECKHARD TOLLE, The Power of Now

Interpretation: appreciate your life now and accept whatever comes your way in stride. Being focused on the present moment and the task at hand will a result in more happiness now and better outcomes in the future than a mere hope that somehow things turn out your way.

It is to signify to begin again, as in up from the ashes. So basically a symbol that you are recommiting to living a Christian life. The ash is often just a smudge on the forehead but it is supposed to be in the form of a cross.

I would actually love to be able to sit down with you (not possible) and to get your thoughts on the above bold words.

That would be the kind of coffee shop conversation that I love and are the most memorable.

The symbolic meaning of the ashes is: "Remember Man, that thou are't dust and to dust thou shalt return".

Dear Dan......how the hell is one supposed to come up with a snappy comment about that?

The church tells us the ashes are from burnt palm leaves. Actually the ashes are from the rectory. If the church banned smoking the priest would have to smudge the sign of the cross with a portion I suppose.

Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

Yes, ashes to ashes as well.

Ashes are a sign of physical death, as in 'ashes to ashes, dust to dust.' We began as dust and our bodies will return to dust. By receiving ashes and keeping them on, we publicly proclaim our intent to die to our worldly desires and live even more in Christ's image, which we focus on during the season of 'rebirth' that is Lent (a Latin term for 'Spring').

Rise from the ashes as in repent:

In Old Testament times people used ashes as a sign of repentance. They would sit in ashes, roll around in them, sprinkle them upon their heads, or even mix them with their food and drink. They did this as an outward sign of their inward posture of repentance.

One of the reasons I'm here is because you and many other members here have always come to the "rescue" with great comments like yours above.

I gave up Catholicism for lent when I was 9. And decided to make that a permanent change to my life.
