Yep, I really had an issue with the tight chest thing when I quit. I would lay in bed at night just gripping it trying to make it stop, my solution was to vape right before bed, it gave me the "throat hit" which made the tightness go away. Smoke free for 10 months now without even attempting to go back and at this point I don't think I will ever have the desire to.

I didn't switch from smoking but every once in a while I will have a smoke or while sitting on my balcony I will fish out my old pipe and pouch of whatever tobacco and each time I regret it. I feel fine i just can't get that F****** taste out of my mouth. It is there for days. I can blitz through a whole can of cope every 6 months or so and my mouth feels gross but the god damn taste of those cigs just lasts forever in misery.

Pack lightly and resist tamping to often, and when you do just barely settle the ash without a lot of pressure.
It should draw as easily as sucking through a straw before you light. Also MM cobs are a recommended try with
the aforementioned info utilized. Practice and in time your skills will improve and your mouth and tongue will get acclimated
Yeah usually tongue bite in the beginning is just because of puffing too often and sometimes too harshly in the attempt to keep the pipe lit. Relights should not be worried about. Most people that I've known who've smoked pipes for twenty year or more still have around four or five relights on average. The major things to remember are to be careful packing the tobacco (don't forget to check the draw before lighting), do a nice even charring light then tamp the tobacco lightly to even out the ash and give it one more lighting, and after that don't forget to tamp every so often. Tamping the ash down helps the ember stay on the unburned tobacco and keeps you lit longer. Some blends do tend to require a little drying out. MacBaren is notorious for having their tobacco more moist than usual in the tin/pouch. Tobacco that's too moist will be a pain to light and keep lit and will more than likely make your pipe gurgle like hell. Keep the chin up and enjoying your smokes. You'll get the hang of it soon.
Every pipe smoker started out this way (tongue bite/aftertaste). Packing correctly and smoking slowly is the key. It takes time and practice. It does come with time.
As for English blends, they are my normal smoke, and also need experience to appreciate.
If you have a little tingle on your tongue after smoking a bowl, dissolve a teaspoon of sugar on your tongue, this will help relieve the tongue bite quickly.
We have all been there (tongue bite) endeavor to persevere! [] Biotene mouthwash is also very good, it's medicated and contains no alcohol.
Visit your local tobacconist for proper instructions on packing, smoking, as well as pipe and tobacco options.
