Redman is very comparable in texture to cope snuff or skoal original (fine cut wintergreen). It really isn't at all like snus - tastes a lot like cope snuff.

I think you guys are harsh on american smokeless. Don't get me wrong I like Snus better, but I see no harm in having a can or so of dip a month to add some variety. Harmful or not, the tobacco itself isn't low quality. We all love smokeless tobacco here anyway; and aside from Sweden, the US has the second longest and largest tradition of oral tobacco use.

Redman natural is the Rolls Royce of American dip-with cope being a very very close second. You can get 3 free cans of Redman if you look up the offer on google.

    Anywho, happy Snusing to all.

Most current levels of TSNA in smokeless as of 2006. The Americans are catching up.

      general: 2.0ppm
      Cope snuff : 4.8ppm
      Cope L/C: 7.5ppm
      Skoal L/C Straight: 9.2ppm
      Skoal Bandits: 1.3ppm
      Kodiak Ice: 3.1ppm
      Kodiak Wintergreen: 4.5ppm

See page 86 of the link below.

No, dip is fermented: that's what gives it its taste. Snus is air/steam cured.
From my understanding, American dip was fire cured. :?:
        It's definitely dip.

Here's another report on the lowering of TSNA levels in American "dip".

          http://www.tobacco.org/News/010622BostonRE.html

Here's the paragraph the summarizes the article:

"The concentration of the total TSNA in the leading U.S. moist oral snuff brands varies greatly, from 7.5 to 128 µg per g dry tobacco (Table 2). For comparison with the TSNA concentrations in the leading five U.S. snuff brands, a popular Swedish snuff brand, which was produced under anaerobic conditions, had even lower TSNA values (2.8 µg/g) than the lowest U.S. snuff brand. This demonstrates that snuff can be produced with low concentration of TSNA and with it, with a significantly reduced potential for carcinogenic activity. The technology clearly exists to manufacture snuff with low levels of TSNA, as shown by the Swedish brand and the brand made by Swedish Match."

I wonder how the companies are reducing the amount of TSNAs in dip?

Try the Fine cut Natural. It's ultra fine cut, comparable with the cut of Snus; but American dip isn't quite as moist. That's the best dip I've ever had. Even better (flavor, not nicotine) than cope snuff.
I have. I went to the MO State Fair and they gave me three free samples.

I tried it. I found it sweet, and it had the wintergreen/eucalyptus flavoring to it. Yuck.

I'll stay with snus. General forever.

Let us not confuse snuff with snus. One is full of cancer causing chemicals and pumped full of flavorings, the other is not.
Sweet... wintergreen? The fine cut is not sweet at all. Are you sure you didn't have the straight? The fine cut is a smokey flavor and not harsh at all.

I agree the fine cut natural from Redman is the best dip ever. I still get it every once in a while. Great stuff, even if you do have to pick it from your teeth for an hour with a toothpick when your done.

I like Longhorn and it costs 1.22 at Walmart here. I usually get the straight but also like the natural.

I picked up a can of Red Man Original Fine Cut one morning, just because it was like 2 bucks a can, and it had been over 10 years since I'd tried any dip. I tried a big cheekful, and immediately remembered why I never could get into dip.

To my palate at least, it tastes like Fermented Ässhölë. Even Red Man. To each his own, of course, just not my thing.

Spirit, I agree; to a point. I still love Grizzly Wintergreen and Skoal Mint, although I haven't had any in weeks, but I've found that although I only like "unflavored" snus (General, Skruf Stark, Phantom Classic, Knox, etc. and yes, I know they have stuff like bergamot and juniper and all that, but I meant "mint" and "peach" and what not), I can't stand the 'Straight' or 'Natural' American dips. They taste like fresh mulch smells to me. And I don't know if that's what people like about it, but it sure don't float my boat.

Dang guys! My post set "los" the research hounds! Very cool. I have to say, in the short time since my original post, I have been using portion snus to the RM LC WG about 5:1. Out of the times I have used it, I'm liking it a little more each time, and I'm definitely curious now to try the RedMan Natural. I think for everyday use, portions have me hooked, especially some of the better SM stuff like Roda, G. Onyx and N&J West. I'll do a quick little post when my los order arrives and break it down. Thanks for the great info everyone.

Well MOST American Snuff natural flavors are nasty.

However Copenhagen and Redman Snuff are just Natural Tobacco with salt.

Other brands "Natural" flavors i have had are way too synthetic

Really? Red Man tasted more complex than that, although the tobacco flavor is definitely dominant. It tasted to me like it was lightly dipped in honey.

Hey guys, finally mastered what amounts to an Americanized pris with this stuff. And is response to 'Grampy's' reply on the first page questioning a couple of us calling it "sweet", yes, to my tastebuds, and compared to lots of snus I've had, it's rather sweet. It's not OffRoad candy-of-the-month sweet, but sweet. And I'm not sure if there's a difference between fine cut and long cut, but this is definitely long. But I'm liking it as a potential alternative if the US ever imposes some ridiculously expensive tax on online-ordered Swedish snus. I never would have thought of upper-lipping RedMan, if it weren't for snus. I usually "bake" a pinch abot the size of a maxi portion and put it up on the upper left, my preferred spot. I change my previous rating of "decent" to "good".

If your using the long cut, it definately is sweet and nothing at all like the fine cut taste wise. The fine cut is not sweet at all (IMO of course) and has a completely different taste. To me, its kind of mesquite and reminds me of cooking out steaks on the grill.

Go and get some Red Man Fine cut and you'll see what I mean. Nothing like the long cut at all.

It sounds good. I'm learning to like unflavored/'not as' flavored snus also. Grov white portion's flavor reminds me of the only snus can I've never finished, Retro portion. But I think the Retro's bitterness is what I didn't care for, whereas the Grov white seems like it might be balanced with a tiny hint of citrus. @Grampy: sorry I didn't read the latter part of the thread with enough detail, you were asking the other person who'd tried the free sample if they were sure they'd had the fine cut. Your 'mesquite' description has me curious enough to go see if my local corner store has the fine cut!

sorry guys, i think that came out a little wrong. what i should have said is that it doesn't really mean it's as safe as snus just because it was from swedish match. i personally believe all american dip has chemical additives that you get addicted to on top of nicotine. plus using dip really ****s up your mouth... even though it's great and all. my mouth was waaay more ****ed up when i was using dip.. but it all comes down to your own pleasure. i guess i just don't get that craving for dip very often. my mouth has become over sensitive or something because the last time i took a dip it just tasted ****ing nasty. i could literally taste all the chemicals. it's weird because it used to be my favorite brand. but yet again i guess i'm focusing way too much on the health aspect but don't get me wrong... dipping was great while it lasted... and i'm sure i'll end up doing it again one way or another. just my 2 cents. i kinda went in a circle.
