Altria to buy smokeless tobacco maker UST

(Snus is mentioned in this article --)

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26607604/

"... Altria Group said Monday it would buy the maker of Skoal and Copenhagen for about $10.3 billion.

Altria’s acquisition of UST will give it a strong position in smokeless tobacco, a segment of the U.S. market that is growing as cigarettes decline. Altria owns the Marlboro brand and the nation’s biggest cigarette maker, Philip Morris USA.

American smokers are buying fewer cigarettes as smoking bans and health concerns dampen demand by 3 percent to 4 percent a year. That has forced tobacco companies to look for sales growth from alternatives such as cigars, chewing tobacco and potentially snus, teabag-like pouches that are popular in parts of Europe. ..."

Thank god i quit using dip when i did.

I always enjoyed fresh copenhagen. And I really could say that UST made quality products and stood by them.

I could see copenhagen and skoal suffer quality loss from this but it could be a good thing.

I wonder if snus ever gets popular if we would see a Copenhagen Snus.

That sounds far fetched but I think that Skoal and/or Copenahgen Snus would catch the attention of American Snuff users.

I know quite a few people who wont use snus because its swedish (?) dont know why. So an American Snus product with an old brand name may be whats needed to jump start the American Snus market. If America can ever get it right.

A Cope Snus would be great, I always enjoyed Cope snuff. I would still use it if it wasn't so tough on my gums. Cope juice is a bit rough for me to swallow much of, but the flavor is one of a kind.

Yeah I would imagine it would be toned down but if they could just capture that great Copenhagen Snuff Flavor that would be amazing.

I just figure if there is any brand that could jump the Snus march in America it would have and should have been US Smokeless Tobacco.

Now we will have to see.

I would think a flagship brand such as Skoal or Copenhagen would be the way to go. At least they could probably get it right, unlike Camel and Marlboro.

Apparently Skoal Dry was discontinued and Skoal Snus will take it's place in the near future. That would be amazing if they released a Copenhagen snus! In the next ten years, I wouldn't be surprised if most "dip" brands came out with their own version of snus in America.

I really do not want to see the US get big in to snus. I think it will really hurt the snus game. It will probably jack up taxes and prices on snus also. I like it the way it is. There is absolutely nothing wrong with how snus is now. For me at least. The only thing I could ever ask for is more los flavors to come out, but even then I am totally content. Please keep snus on the DL in the US.

Prismaster i could argue with you all day but me and mr clean already did that in another post. lol.

America will develope snus because its popularity is growing and big tobacco is always looking for other outlets to make money off of.

its a matter of time before it happens and we should always remember these days we have had so far.

It may be 2 years or it may be 10 but one way or another itll be here.

Ya I know it's already coming. I just do not want it to. The snus scene is excellent the way it is now. I guess I'm just wishing you know.

Well whenever times change people will look back and refer to what was once a great time as the glory or good ol days.

We are in the glory days of snus right now because its almost like its our little secrets. At least as an American.

But that wil change, and I know opinions differ on whether thats good or bad the point is we should enjoy these days while they r still around

If cope can put out a snus that's as strong as their snuff, buysnus will be getting a LOT less of my money.

Seems to me all they'd have to do is just throw Grov into a Copenhagen branded can. I used Cope for a LONG time when I was younger, and the first time I tried loose Grov I couldn't help but think that the taste was similar, if not identical.

Edit: Just pulled a can of Grov loose out of the fridge to remind myself. Heck, I even find the smell similar. The more I think about it, the more I think this would be a good idea.

Also, isn't the stuff we use here in the States at least "inspired" by old Scandinavian snus recipes? Wouldn't something like Copenhagen probably have been Grov (or something similar) at one point in it's history?

A Copenhagen inspired snus, I would definetly be interested. But when I think about it, especially since the levels of TSNA in American smokeless are dropping dramatically, isn't it all the same? With the obvious exception being the curing differences (steam/pasturized vs. fire/fermented). I use Copenhagen longcut like snus. I grab a pinch and put it in my upper lip. The juice tastes, great no need to spit, and it's very satisfying. I would say however, that for some reason, the nicotine hit is not as long-lived with American smokeless as compared to Swedish snus, imo.

                          Copenhagen is a Danish city : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copenhagen

"Skoal" is a variant of a Danish word: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skoal

I can't really detect that much Cope taste in Grov, I think Ettan is more Copesque.

It's interesting that most people say this as well. To me, Grov is the Cope taste and smell. Ettan has always been, well, flavorless IMO.

See I hate Grov, I will never re-order it.

But Ettan has the Copenhagen taste IMHO. Just the right amount of salt and tobacco.

Grov was just Tobacco and hardly any salt and tasted like crap to me. But I would say Ettan is about as close to cope than any other snus ive had.

Keep in mind that im comparing Los. Ive never had Grov Portions.
