Did you notice how they just dropped cut and paste items for dramatic effect? Observe,

The PACT Act is a broad anti-smuggling bill that aims to stop the widespread illegal sale of tobacco. Profits from the illegal sale of tobacco have been used to finance terrorist organizations. The legislation closes loopholes in current tobacco trafficking laws as well as provides law enforcement with new tools to combat the new methods being used by cigarette traffickers to distribute their products.

The items in italics were completely fictitious, nobody has ever proven conclusively that online cigarette or tobacco sales fund terrorism. That's just scare tactics to justify the draconian control of what can me mailed in our supposedly free country.

As an adult of legal age, it is NOT illegal for me to purchase online tobacco products, and have them delivered to my home. This is fully, 100% within my rights as a US citizen of legal age.

It's the vote total that saddens me. Anti-tobacco sentiment is simply overwhelming. There goes my Swedish snus. There goes my custom pipe tobacco. With a vote that lopsided, we probably can't hope the Senate will do otherwise.

If I am reading things correctly, it's not really the end for buying snus and having it shipped in. Technically the other private carriers can in fact transport tobacco products, but they are required to check Identification upon delivery to ensure you are of legal age to purchase.

But a $30 delivery fee on a $30 order will sure put a crimp in my habit. This has nothing to do with "the children" and everything to do with the almighty tax dollar.

Seems we need to get more dealers in the states.

When I was visiting Canada this summer (Vancouver), where they have a 19 year old age limit I did happen to order from buysnus.com. I'm only 18, so I didn't lie when I checked off the box saying I'm over 18 years of age. And I've justified it to myself atleast because I'm of legal age in my country of residence.

This whole sordid mess is a direct result of elliot spitzer's enormous greed when it comes to taxing tobacco products in New York State. There is a long, long history of New York battling the natives and their bustling cigarette and tobacco industries run off the reservations. Instead of properly running the state government, making NYC pull it's fair load, they insist upon leveling more and more burden upon those who can least afford to pay, but have little voice in government.

Like others have mentioned it looks like he just wants to stop the shipping of tobacco products through USPS...which i don't really care about, as long as prices don't change...but who knows, this guys seems like he is worrying about completely worthless things...what im trying to say is he has a lot more to worry about that the import of tobacco...and i highly doubt that terrorist organizations are funded with the illegal "trafficking" of TOBACCO!!! hahaha, come on guys, lets think on this...don't you think they would be much more likely be trafficking drugs? than tobacco? that seems a little ridiculous to me!

well anyways, the only sales of tobacco that are illegal, is to sell tobacco to what that particular country deems a minor.... if you see what im saying?

i agree with pcguy, "The items in italics were completely fictitious"

AS LONG AS I CAN GET SNUS! I DONT CARE!

while we will still be able to order and import snus, we will be paying drastically higher shipping prices. Like $30 or slightly more to have a package sent via a private carrier.

I have been researching the different carriers, and it seems UPS specifically bans the shipment of cigarettes to individuals. They have strict regulation on tobacco in general, but they don't specifically say anything about snuff or snus in their verbage, which leaves me confused, or thinking they will ship snus but require legal identification which proves you are of age and the shipper must adhere to all regulations.

I got snus delivered by UPS twice. It was delivered to my door without any kind of confirmation, and I got reamed on shipping charges :^/

what a mess. sometimes (and sadly quite often in recent years) this country and its antics disgusts me.

Delivery costs can be a barrier to purchase. I've recently checked the $6 option for postal delivery twice, as opposed to $30 for another delivery service. A $20 order of product with a $30 shipping charge would be ridiculous.

This is an interim measure anyhow, designed to drive me to my local tobacco store for General or CatchDry, and a tub of Carter Hall instead of 8 ounces of Shortcut to Mushrooms. The end these people seek is elimination of tobacco products by making them difficult to sell, expensive to purchase and illegal to use in public.

                              This truly sucks.

We're going to have to ask for cheaper shipping rates from Buysnus and Northerner via the other carriers - like a discounted "ground" rate (even though it will fly over "the pond").

Anyone have any suggestions on how to approach this with the companies so we don't have to pay the $30 to get $20 of snus shipped? There must be something they can do?

                              Otherwise we're sorta screwed.

Also - does anyone know if this will make it through the Senate or when it is up for vote or anything along those lines? Does anyone know what a President would do with this (veto?)
