Islay Whisky Snus - does it contain alcohol?

Hi guys, this is my second post back from the e-dead. You may remember me as 'Vulpes' from a couple of years ago, and 'Raddleman' from even further back for old timers.

Well, I'm back on snus - got a couple of Oden's rolls (Kanel & lakrits OPs) and a couple rolls on the way (fudge & vanilla), also a roll each of Jaks WG and melon and a roll of Offroad liquorice lös, and a couple of other odds and sods.

I have a question regarding Islay Whisky snus, as it sounds fantastic, but the issue I have is I can't tolerate alcohol. Whisky taste fine but just no alcohol.

Maybe someone - GN himself would be good :-) - could let be know.

    Happy snusing.

I would imagine that the alcohol either cooks off or evaporates off during production.....but i am not 100% sure. This might be a good question to ask GN directly. You might find a quicker response either Facebooking the question to him or tweeting it to him directly

Oh.......and good to see ya back bro!!! In your third manifestation

When it's my time to go, I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my uncle did....... Not screaming in terror like his passengers

Thanks Dog, I'll tweet him. <--- get in a time machine to a decade ago and that phrase will sound as odd as a box of frogs.

Thanks Squeezy, I prefer my new username, as it's more gender-specific. Err, that is if I were a fox.

Yeah City are smashing it at the moment, it's good being a fan right now :-)

How have you been? are you still making rustica twist and other such experiments I seem to remember you were busy at?

Cool - yes I am still making snus and twist ... it's nearly rustica harvest time now and my leaves are gigantic this time ... should be plenty of twist.

Here's one of my rustica leaves this year (in the rain!) with my hand as a guide to it's size. Those will make some pretty stunning salty twist.

I will - my finished twist only has a tiny bit of propylene glycol, bergamot oil, and salt sprayed on it before twisting ... I don't use alcohol except when I make the brandy flavoured one occasionally ... however when hung up to dry for 3 weeks almost all traces of ethanol will have evaporated before use.

I'd be honoured mate. I took the plunge with the Islay Whisky, GN says they do use whisky, but I suspect - as you say - the ethanol will have evaporated.

I'm not GN, but in regards to your question, considering that actual Islay Whisky is the #1 ingredient, and it's the final flavor so it's probably added at the end, I'd say there is probably quite a bit of alcohol left in it. Flavor components are very volatile, much like alcohol, so some of it does evaporate over time, but the majority is still there in the can. So just like the volatile flavors that remain, the volatile alcohol will also remain.

When I cracked the can, it clearly contained whisky, so I dumped the snus and kept the tin (the tin, to be quite honest, was what I wanted, for my new wall o' snus - I know that might sound daft)
