    small revelation

Don't know if this belongs here, feel free to move it if not.

So it's been a week since I got my first can of snus and trashed my last can of copenhagen snuff. And I have to say I think *think* I'm getting my tastebuds back. At the very least I can definitely taste the difference between general and skruf, and I'll be darned if soda doesn't taste a bit too sweet. This could all be in my head, so have any of you other converted dippers noticed a palate shift? For years now I've only enjoyed the extremes in taste: HOT curries, Mexican, and barbecues, strong coffee, and sweet tea. It'd be pretty nice if my tongue would rebound and start enjoying other flavors.

I think you're right cc. I quit a pack a day smoke habit to use about 3/4 a portion snus can a day back in June, and I use lös a few times a day. I used to have a real tolerance to Thai food, mexican etc. I wondered if my recent "pussification" re: spicy food had something to do with snus. It's probably that my tastebuds are normalizing from lack of heated smoke and dry-ness in my mouth. I had lunch at a mongolian grill and reached for the Sri-Racha hot sauce the other day, it killed me!

I wonder if it is a combination effect. 1) your tastebuds are returning to normal situation and 2) the snus "burn" can leave a very little bit of soreness that is more receptive to the hot flavors.

Just my 2C but I could be wrong.

Hasn't effected me that way. I can still eat the spiciest of asian foods, that can eat the finish off silverware

I haven't noticed anything like that, I love hot foods including the hottest of peppers and can still eat them straight. I do seem to enjoy eating more, but that always comes and goes for me anyways, so I don't necessarily see a link there either.

The returning of the taste buds was something that I never believed, when ex-smokers talked about that, but it also happened to me and it was very strong, to be true, it was almost frightening in the beginning.

Since dip is heavily flavored, after all I know, and snus is more like a taste-enhancer than a 'flavor-bomb', I guess there is also no need to worry for an ex-dipper. It's simply normal that the sense of taste returns. You'll get used to the 'new' experiences, very soon.

            Cheers!

Sorry to hijack the thread, but are there any snuses that are spicy? I'd love a tobasco flavored snus. General is a bit peppery but not spicy by any means.

I haven't noticed an extreme "wake up" of the taste buds, but from a scientific standpoint, salt tends to make flavors more vibrant; so if you're ditching a portion or a pris prior to eating, the residual salt in your mouth is probably making the food "more flavorful".

@cosmokramer: sorry, General is the "spiciest" snus I've found. Some snuses have more (sorry for lack of a better word) caustic juice. I guess I mean the juice creates more of a burn than General. Those, I've found, are Knox, Phantom Classic (although Phantom has a sweeter, more mellow flavor) and Gustavus.

I've always found Göteborgs Rapé to have a peppery element of spice to it, if you're into juniper. It's not spicy like Jeb's Rootin' Tootin' Chilli, though, if that's what you mean  Hot damn what a good idea, though - snus dipped in chilli oil! Merciful bliss

I have noticed that my taste buds are less muted since I quit smoking and started using snus. I believe it is a combination of the two and am glad to be able to detect many more savory flavors.

I also tend to lean towards less spicy now. (Just a little Cayenne pepper now!)

i know exactly what you mean. don't worry, you'll get used to it over time. i started with skruf stark loose and general loose.. general seemed quite a bit too weak for me(i used to dip the grizz) but i noticed a change in sweet tastes especially.. and artificial tastes also. i tried to dip grizzly a couple of weeks ago with a friend when i was running out of snus and it tasted sooo grossly sweet and artificial. it also gave me a bad sore. but food tastes better than ever i think. i actually gained a bit of weight when i switched to snus if that tells you anything.

I have definately noticed "more" tastes since switching to snus from smoking, in fact i actually get the cravings the likes no pregnant woman would eat

That said i am definately loving the new found taste sensations! Although i have started to really watch my salt intake now, a while back i used to use far too much salt in diet and was advised to cut down, and now with using snus i have all but iradicated salt from my diet!

Anyone know exactly how much salt is in snus or how much is ingested into the body? I know its about 50% water and not sure if that would balance it, but the salty taste and nature of it makes me wonder... :?

I believe it was on the SM site www.gothiatek.com they had the values listed...

If I remember right, it's about 5%, which for a 45g tin of loose is roughly 2g of salt or a 24g tin of portions would be about 1g.
