I just read in another topic in this forum that Camel is also available as snus.
I tried a lot of online stores but couldnt find it listed anywhere.
Could neone teeme of an online store where i can order some camel?

Related question - I'm interested to hear what the 'cigarette brand' snus are like. It seems that there couldn't really be much similarity between the cigarettes and snus from the same brand, so I'm guessing it's just attempting to cash in on an emerging market?

fatehbajwa - Camel snus is still in market testing and, I think, is only available in a few places in america so far. If all goes well they should start moving into the global market with it.

(Nevermind the "same cancer-risks" bit at the end - just baseless american media spin. The country's a bit sideways when it comes to distinguishing truth from what people want to hear and there are a lot of people who get upset and shout and file lawsuits when people say things they don't want to hear... I suspect that advertising snus's much lower rates of cancer causing agents would cause exactly such a stir amongst the anti-tobacco lobby :roll: )

Dave - I've only tried Lucky Strike as the Camels aren't readily available but as far as I can tell it's most probably (mostly) just an attempt to cash on their big-name brand. That's really what business is all about, though, so I guess you can't hate the player for the game. The luckies are alright, though, I mean they're a proper snus and have their own reasonably distinct flavour - a smooth, slightly caramel/toasted taste. They go well with a nice cup of coffee. Credit to lucky for actually putting effort into creating something with a bit of unique character.

Ah so, at least in the case of Lucky Strike, they've ended up somewhere in between an ideal world scenario and soulless cash-in by the sounds of it. That's reasonably heartening to hear. I half expected to find it wasn't proper snus. I'd be interested to hear confirmation of the production methods and TSNA etc figures too.

Camel have a dedicated snus website at www.snuscamel.com where you can see the packaging. Kind of makes me think they probably aren't far off moving out of the trial stage. Assuming they're doing snus properly, I'd be interested to hear from anyone who's tried it...

Well, the luckies are made in Sweden so I imagine they must be using the Swedish process which produces the low TSNA levels, but it would be interesting to see. Even among the swedish brands there are reasonable variations in TSNA levels - skruf, for example being a fair bit lower than, say, general, etc. I'm not aware of any serious studies on the subject, though.

I tried Lucky Strike Snus when I saw it as I used to like the cigarettes. I couldn't find any info on it on the net (even Nicotine content) and BAT wern't very forthcoming. Funnily enough it had a Swedish Match ref number when I ordered it from northerner.com maybe they make it under license for them?

I wonder whether cigarette companies are just going to cashin in on their brand names with Snus too. I prefer my General anyway

Camel Snus is only available in Portland and Austin right now. I picked up a couple cans while i was in Austin in June and really like it. I only tried the spice flavor, but it was excellent. (it was actually the first snus i had ever tried - I had never even heard of snus prior to that.)

The Camel Snus website hasn't changed in 3 or 4 months. I've sent them a couple emails trying to find out when it will be going nationwide, but they haven't spilled the beans yet.

I'll be driving through Portland next week and I'll be picking up a can or ten

Good to hear that the Camel snus is apparently good stuff. It'll be interesting to see how it fares once it's on general release. How did the spice flavour taste? It may be difficult to compare to another spicy snus brand if you haven't tried others, but I'm interested to hear your impressions, phetish?

My feeling is that they'll do precisely that. Other than perhaps strong/mild I can't see how there could really be brand continuity into snus, it's just a different product to cigarettes.

And I think I agree with your instinct that 'real' snus brands are likely to be preferable. Especially if it turns out that the crossover companies ride rough shod over the traditions and, and more importantly, standards of long standing snus brands. But time will tell...

Yes, but thanks to the EU ban, Swedish snus is not well known in europe and only occupies a very niche market in north america. That leaves most of the people out there with no idea that snus even exists, which means that if, all of a sudden, big-tobacco pushes the EU to finally drop the ban, they will be doing so because they're ready to enter the market with a whole array of Marlboro, Camel, and Dunhill snus brands to "introduce" the world to. Sadly, the politics of the situation could end up having most people still ignorant to swedish brands if snus ever gets big. I expect that america is going to be the testing grounds for the rationale to lift the EU ban. At least, if I was an evil, heartless, greedy business overlord, that's how I would organise my conquest of the world snus market.

hmmm - how was it....

I'm not a smoker, nor a "dipper" (american snuff) - aside from the occasional cigar, i'm not a tobacco user. That's why it was so very odd for me to try Snus. I saw the display and took some literature to read up about it - i'm always interested in how companies market stuff. after reading the literature and doing some internet research i was intrigued. So i bought a can.

As for the taste - I loved it. VERY spicy, lots of cinnamon and other strong spices. Quite strong - i got the "rush" and very lightheaded very quickly. burned a hole in my lip too! Nothing I've tried since has given me the rush that I got from the Camel Snus.

Since then, i've been trying to find a substitute. I've tried:

Rocker Blue
Rocker White
Kicks Lime
Kicks Berry
Skruf Stark Cranberry
Mocca Mandarin
CatchDry Eucalyptus
CatchDry Vanilla Coffee

But nothing has been anything like the Camel Snus Spice flavor. If you have any suggestions for a good "spicy" snus, i'd love tohear about it!

Camel Snus will only be released as portions. The portions were more of a "mini" size, and were more like the "dry" snus's.

I've sent them another email looking for a nationwide release date, but haven't heard back yet. I'll let you know if i hear anything.

Well, politics aside, that sounds a pretty encouraging impression of the Camel snus itself. I look forward to trying some when it's released properly.

Anyone know when the EU ban might be up for review? It seems as time goes on the case for retaining it is being eroded more & more. Surely with large corporation money looking to get behind promoting the product, it can't last a great deal longer...

I'm hoping this hasn't been a failure and that Camel will eventually release it nationwide. I'm pretty sure they will since they (RJR) bought a smokeless tobacco manufacturer last year - which i assume was for this project.

Oh well... on Sunday I will be driving through Portland, so I'll be grabbing a bunch on my way through!

Have you tried Göteborgs Rapé? It MIGHT be somewhat compatible with Camel Snus Spice - not quite sure, but do know it seemed quite spicy (and peppery) to me when I forgot it was in my mouth and started biting into a plain hot dog and my head felt like it shot up eight miles high (re: snussy-whipped - lol); that's not the only time I forgot one of them mini pouches was in my mouth :shock: .

Camel Snus.....

Yep, Had my first Lip of Camel Snus last week. One of my tobacco bro's visited Portland and picked up a can of Frost, which is my favorite, and Spicy, which is very nice, as well. Soft durable pouch and the Nic-Kick is excellent. This product will eat the lunch of other dry-pouch products in the USA.
