As you might guess by my post count, I'm pretty new to snus...but after trying quite a few brands, I posted this on the board that originally led me to try snus (the original post is here: http://forums.somethingawful.com/sho...er=22#lastpost) and I thought it'd only be appropriate to also post the same thoughts over here and get some reactions from some veteran snus aficionados...
Any further recommendations from you experts?
NOTE: I wasn't so sober when posting that original post on SA, or so sober now. Whoever scheduled the Fiesta Bowl for a Monday night was a genius...but tomorrow morning I'm sure i'll say he was an idiot.
I've tried quite a bit of snus and here's my findings so far:
Lucky Strike White Portion: Probably my favorite so far. My everyday office snus. Peppery, salty, and when it gets a bit of a run going it's delicious.
Nick and Johnny Strong Portion: I love the flavor...but DAMN is it ever strong. I can't keep it in for that long or I start to feel slightly queasy and I have to spit it out.
Nick and Johnny West: Tastes alot like the normal Nick and Johnny but with less run. Less flavor but it tastes great.
General Original Portion: Great snus all around. This would make a fabulous everyday snus. There's alot of different flavors going on. It's subtle, delicious but doesn't last as long as I wish it would. Thus...
General White Portion: Tastes a lot like the original but a little less strong in the flavor department. A bit more of a saltier taste. Very close to the General Original, but lasts longer, and has a bit more salt and flavor once you get it going. I love it.
Ettan White Portion: This is a GREAT straight up tobacco style portion snus. Lots of flavor and there's a lot going on underneath what's originally there to begin with. This was a trial can I got from getsnus and I'm so glad they sent it that I ordered 5 more cans right after I went through the trial one.
Roda Lackett White Portion: A sweeter snus. A nice fruity flavor. I don't see myself doing a lot of flavored snus, but when I'm in the mood for something that is a bit lighter tasting then Ettan, General, N&J or Lucky, I'll go with this for a bit.
General Onyx: This is way too much for me. Not in the nicotine department, but it's almost like jagermeister...ok every once in awhile but it's trying to be way too up front with the flavors. Almost perfumeish (is that even a word? CALL WEBSTER!). General is trying to overcome the tobacco flavor and mask it behind a bunch of spices and odors... I don't like it very much and I regret ordering two cans of it, especially since it's more expensive.
Triumph: I threw a friend of mine a can of Lucky White's after learning he was trying to quit smoking via Nicotine lozenges and he loved it. He eventually found some Triumph snus for sale at the local Speedway so I tried it out. It's more of a swedish snus than Camel, but it's way too sweet for me. It's like they used normal swedish snus tobacco and dumped a bunch of splenda in it. I don't recommend, but at least there's a local alternative if I ever run out of the real thing and I won't have to go choking myself by buying a pack of Camels if I'm desperate.
Camel Frost & Spice: I might as well have been sucking on a package of those dissolvable breath mints that orbitz or whoever the hell sells. No nicotine kick. Small as hell portions. More expensive than any swedish snus and you only get 15 portions (15 small ass portions) per can. I'd rather stick a backwoods wrapped in an Airhead under my lip than this stuff. Did I mention that the portions were small? And weak? And super sugary? If any tobacco gets accused of marketing towards kids it'd be this. It's absolute rubbish. It's what a diabetic unicorn's shit would taste like.
If you have tastes similar to mine, I highly recommend Lucky, Ettan and General.
I've got a half-roll of Skruf Original Portions on the way as well as an assortment of other cans that I have a hankerin' to try. I'll keep you guys updated.
God damn, I love this stuff. When I smoked I found myself sticking to one or two brands (Camel Lights, Lucky Strike Lights, American Spirit Lights...) but with snus, I find it easy to switch from one brand to another, which poses a problem when it comes to my goal of keeping only 2-3 cans open at a time.
I've tried some los (Skruf Stark, Ettan, Roda Lackett, Gotenborg Rape) only to find it alot harder and I keep getting mud mouth. I'm sticking with portions from now on...sometimes I'm in the mood for white, sometimes original. Los is ok every once in awhile but it's way to much work to take it out, pack it, bake it, stick it under your lip and hope that you don't get mud mouth. I'm sure after awhile I'll learn to bake a decent pris and be able to enjoy it more...but that will have to come sometime in the future. For now I'm happy where I'm at.
