Why does my General Portion smell like BLEACH?

I swear it smells gawd-awful. Like some kind of cleaning product.
I know now why Camel made their "snus" so sweet & aromatic. They want Americans to buy the stuff!
Don't get me wrong, General give 10 times more nic than the Camel shit, but damn it's not tasty at all. Very bitter tasting.
Maybe I have a bad can?

The ammonia smell means that it is super fresh. You are lucky indeed. It seems that the only really fresh cans I get are of new flavors. I wish my cans of General had that whiff of ammonia...

If your only comparison is Camel snus, that explains it. American tobaccos are unnaturally sweet.

When you first try Swedish snus you may taste bitterness and salt but those fade away the longer you use it.

Most of the vices we try growing up are like that, cigarettes, beer, coffee, whiskey, bourban, etc etc. They are aquired tastes.

A profound point! So true. I thought all that shit, and wine, and gin, and tea, and on and on, was nasty when I first tried it.

                ^^^All truth...

I don't smell or taste any of the things that I did when I first started. Hell, I even like most of the Offroad varieties now. :P

speaking of aquired tastes, my first two cans were general and general wintergreen, both of which made me feel "high" loved it, but the wintergreen didnt have that much of an appeal to me, it was too bitter and tabbacco tasting, and the General was pure asshole, but i wanted my nic!, oddly enough i never noticed the saltyness of snus. But holy hell 2 months after starting snus wintergreen has this amazing sweet mint flavor that tingles. just amazing perfection i LOVE IT!

Well, I shall differ to all of your more experienced opinions on this, that I will develop a taste for general eventually. I have to have a soda w/ me when I have on in my lip, cause at this point it tastes like ass.
I fully realized that Camel "SNUS" isn't snus at all before I tried it. I have a variety of tins coming in the mail, so I'll see if I can find a more agreeable brand in one of them. Thanks for all the responses.

Actually, you can leave the can cracked open for a few hours (although it will dry a little) and it will get rid of the strong ammonia odor.

I found almost all brands seem to taste better after the can has been open a day or so. I HATE Gote #2 when the can is first opened, let it sit for a couple of days in the fridge and it pretty agreeable.

                          I agree 100%

I think snus peaks and is most enjoyable right before it starts looking stale. Took me a long while to realize what I do and do not like because of this.

Right out of the mailbox - yuck.
Too old and stale - yuck.
                          Somewhere in between - allright!

Bleach? When I smell General, I pick up sweet, subtle hints of lime, complimented with pure tobacco. There may be a bit of ammonia, but it shouldn't be overpowering.
