Why so much more variety in snuff than snus

So I am REALLY bored today. So spending some more time reading Snuffhouse as I await my snuff. And I am just blown away how much different snuff is out there. That got me to thinking about why there are so many makers of snuff and SO many varieties compared to snus.

My guess is that this is just because snus really is a mostly Swedish thing, whereas snuff, especially with the the expansion of the British empire, became big in a bunch more places? Plus I figured that the Swedes (not meaning to insult anyone now) just aren't the most aggressive in trying new things. I mean, how much, other than Abba, have they really contributed to pop culture.

I always get so frustrated when i read the market share of General in Sweden, something like 70% of the market just uses that. I just want to scream, "Try some different flavors folks, try something new" Then maybe, we could start seeing more snus options.

Again, I am just bored today.

General is definitely one of my favorites. I figure one of the main reasons that there is so much snuff compared to snus is that snuff has been in existence for many centuries, and snus has only been around for a few.

What about the swedish babes?
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

Actually got to party with a Swedish girl a few months back. She was the sister of a friend of my brothers he met going to school while doing a semester abroad in Australia. She was shocked that I knew about snus and used it. Although she was a nurse(health prude) and didn't use snus she admitted that she never saw any negative health repercussions from it. Not to mention that she was a knock-out beauty. I think I might have had a chance if I was not almost 10 years younger than her and drunk enough to fall into a plant stand.

Snuff's cheaper to experiment with, and production can feasibly be on a much smaller scale. Snus is perishable, so if a flavor doesn't sell well, it gets tossed. Snuff will keep for years after being made. The quality may drop a touch, but you can still use it...

From what I have read snuff is a lot easier to flavor. Something about the fine granules soak up flavors more than bigger ones. Experts advise to not keep your snuff in things like old cigar boxes as it will absorb the flavor of the cigars.

If you bought every Friobourg and Treyer snuff you'd never finish them all before dying because of the bloody size of the tins.

I suppose the same could be said for any brand with a lot of variety, like Wilsons of Sharrow.

As for the Swedish not contributing much, they practically invented death metal and stylish, affordable, flat pack furniture.

It's also worth bearing in mind just how small their population is in comparison to other countries though; according to Wikipedia just over 9.2 million people live there, which is fewer people than the population of Los Angeles.

I think you've hit the nail on the head as far as snuff having a more cosmopolitan history than snus. snuff was used in europe, india, china, and the US extensively(some brands still existing). snus, on the other hand, was a well kept swedish secret.

speaking of which, I'm more inclined to embrace american companies making snus because it's a step towards more variety. Though most of us may not like the current offerings, I think the future will hold quality snus made around the world, in at least as many sorts as snuff.

also speaking of which, nasal snuff rocks and I hope to hear your opinions when you get it. I;m actually getting upset now when I have a snus in and am getting enough nic... cause I can't snuff then!(well I could, but I'd probably pass out).

                      Dude, Ace of Base!

Seriously though, I know what you mean......there seems to be every flavor under the sun for dry snuff users. For snus, it seems like they just take a proven flavor, tweak it a little, and call it something else. I've tried regular snuff and have pretty much decided that it's not really for me, but I'm jealous anyway...

                        All interesting comments, thank you.

And I really wasn't meaning to dis on Sweden. After my motorcycle accident last year, i bought an 89 Turbo Saab convertible that took great care of me while I healed and waited for insurance money to buy another bike. So I AM a fan of things Swedish.

I think the reality is there really is a much smaller market for snus. Other than Sweden, I would guess it is just a small number of adventurers in other places that turn to snus. Still, after being overwhelmed by the variety of snuff out there, it was just a little sad looking at what snus we have available.

On the other hadn, so much of the new stuff we have gotten this year is so good, i suppose I shouldn't complain much.

I just wish they would concentrate on some new flavors instead of making the old ones into sterks, extra sterks, and super karate monkey melt your brain sterks. I know a lot of you guys like those strong ones, but with the way things are going, you'll end up having to jam 10 portions under your lip before you'll be able to catch any kind of buzz. :P

This is pretty much it. That and just the breadth of its history. Nasal snuff is the real snuff, but somehow over the years it became oral tobacco. You can find antique "snuffer" containers in China all over the place; some dating back hundreds of years.

I've yet to try nasal snuff, but I will probably buy a container to see what it's like. However, snus is more convenient than nasal snuff. I can get my nicotine in school and work without anyone knowing about it. With nasal snuff, bystanders will probably think you're sniffing cocaine or some other illegal drug or pharmaceutical. However, it is interesting that snus originated from nasal snuff, since the working class in Scandinavia wanted their nicotine while being able to perform their jobs with both hands.

I believe nasal snuff is way easier and cheaper to manufacture than snus. Think about it; once the tobacco consistency is up to par, the manufacturer only needs to add a flavoring to change the snuff. Snus, on the other hand, costs more to manufacture and is very complex.
