Thunder loose smells weird after a few days

    Can anyone explain this.

I ordered a roll of thunder loose. first tin opened 1 day later smelled sour and akin to the smell of urine.

So opened another tin and it was fine, but a day later the same thing.

So as to rule out a problem with my sense of smell I visited some friends who have never heard of or used snus before. I told them about it. and showed them the tin and everyone who smelled it said 'phew stinks like piss' I am not touching that.

    What is this?

before you ask, this snus upon delivery was all sealed correctly and within it use by date, half were put in the freezer the rest in my fridge.

I'm guessing it's a reaction to air. Try sitting one out open for 15 minutes or so, and see if it gets better or worse.

The V2 house smell maybe?

I got a can of Phantom Classic lös the other day and it has that same distinctly off smell to it. Been wondering if there is something wrong with it because even the flavour is nothing like what has been described on this forum.

What flavor are you getting? It seems that some people get a more complicated Phantom than I get :^D

I get a artificial lemon drop flavor, with that odd V2 back taste. I wouldn't say it's bad, but definitely a departure from the standard Swedish snus style.

An ammonia smell is common in very fresh snus. I hardly notice it unless it's in a newly released brand, such as Claq, Grov Black, or in your case Thunder.

Every strong snus I've tried gives off an odor of ammonia. When snus is mixed with air, the pungent odor can become even more intense. That's the one downside to strong snus; the nicotine and added ammonia can smell quite offensive. After awhile, you will become immune to the odor and flavor, since your subconscious mind will teach itself that it's your only source of nicotine. This happens with cigarette smoking as well. If you have not smoked a cigarette for a long time, it will taste horrible. However, when you become addicted, you adapt to the taste because your dopamine receptors subconsciously teach yourself that nicotine is more important than flavor. Its pretty odd stuff!

When is ammonia added to snus?

It is a pretty artificial flavour. It tastes nothing like General citrus/bergamot taste that I enjoy. And it is not even comparable to Skruf or Granit. I've promised myself that I will try it again before tossing the can, but frankly I don't know if I can be bothered.

Let it breathe for a while. Leave it out at room temp. with the lid on for a day or two.

That smell means it's really fresh. Be happy.

I have noticed after putting the can in the fridge for an hour or so the smell of the piss/ammonia goes away.

none of my other snus smells like that apart from an old can of general portion.

not in snus like, "we added a quart of ammonia to the batch."

in snus like, "byproduct of tobacco curing."

if ammonia is put in the batch why is this not stated. One of the selling points of snus is its natural curing process and the fact that only foodsafe ingredients are used.

i do know for sure that ammonia is added to snuff as a manager at Samuel Gawith told me this.

                              sorry you misunderstood my statement.

NOT in snus as if it was "added to the batch"

it is a byproduct of the process.

                              snus is regulated like food.
