    Formed Portions Question

I use a lot of General Onyx, and anyone who has used it knows that the portions are formed I guess you would say. Now when I use a portion of Onyx, my routine is to roll the portion between my fingers, flatten them out and stuff in the ole upper lip. My questions are thus:

Are the portions shaped just for packaging and presentation?

Are they formed such that all you need to do is put them in the upper lip?

If they are formed so all you need to do is put them in the upper lip, which way do they go in? With the fat end inboard or outboard?

I hope these questions make sense.

I believe they are formed like a wedge for easier placement. Triumph is the same way.

and I think the thin part goes toward your nose and the fat part away from it.

but those are both guesses. It doesn't work for me and I just roll it out too.

I always liked the thick part towards my nose. Just didn't feel right the other way around. I dunno.

I pop them in as is, thin part towards the nose. I don't find that the formed portions have any advantage over the other portions though.

Same here, fat part toward the back of my mouth. I dig the shape -- I feel like it sits more comfortably in place. Can't say if its purely for packaging in the star formation or if General also digs the feel of the wedge... is Triumph packaged the same way?

It's a mystery to me as well. I don't like General Onyx so it doesn't really matter. The shape of star portions always fall down toward my teeth for some reason.

Thick part closer to my nose.

I think the shape is just a by product of the design in the can, not really any planned function. That is just my opinion and all us guys know what Dirty Harry said about opinions.

I just throw it in, and it goes where it goes. I don't really place them in any particular way.

My assumption was that they're formed this way as a result of facilitating the manufacturing process and saving money, namely cutting a large sheet of snus into precise shapes to fit the portion bags. Instead of the potentially more messy and wasteful task of dumping a portion of loose tobacco into the bags.

At least that's what I've imagined. Catch Eucalyptus portions are like this too. I nibble them with my front teeth to break them up, then place them in my lip.

The lime flavor is just too overpowering. When combined with the saltiness, it tastes too weird for my tastes. As well, its a white portion, so I get the feeling of sucking on a napkin.
