Just got General White Portion....need some feedback

Well I tried the american camel snus, which tasted great but had almost no nicotine so I decided to try General White Portion. I open it and couldn't believe the smell..just awful. Is this normal? The expiration date is fine too. It almost has a salty ammonia smell to it. I tried one and at first way pretty strong but began to mellow out...I kept in in for about 15 minutes and got quite a nicotine buzz as strong a my normal ryo cigarettes. But my question is, does it normally have this awful strong smell? Or is this how it is? Any advice for me try in the future?

The strong smell will mellow in a day or so. Once opened you can let it mellow in the fridge for a day or so which should help. I was struck by the same thing when i discovered snus and made the jump from camel to swedish. After a week or so I no longer noticed and really began to taste more of the subtle flavors. You may also consider snaging a starter box from northerner.com and trying a few different brands as there is a lot of variance between them.

      The smell is absolutely normal.

You should keep the portions for at least 30 minutes. That way they even kick harder than a cigarette.

I suggest to try Ettan (pure tobacco-taste) or Skruf Stark (bergamot and rose-oil flavoring, sounds strange, but it's a masterly mixture).

      Cheers!

thanks for the quick replies! I may try that sample kit from northerner or some skruf. I guess it takes time to find the one you like best though...but compared to camel snus...this is the compete opposite!

Yeah the smell is initially offputting, but it eases after you open a tin. The ammonia smell is a byproduct of the processing of the tobacco. Trust me, the flavor is faaaaaar better than the smell..lol

Also, you may want to try Goteborgs Rape and Ettan. Enjoy and experiment with alot of different flavors.

            Welcome to Snuson Maxpower05080.

I definitely recommend a sample pack from either Buysnus or Northerner. Nice way to get your feet wet and they are priced aggressively.

Just be prepared for your tastes to keep shifting for a bit. And never give up on a snus if you don't like the first one. Early on, I would try one I absolutely hated. A few days later, i suddenly loved in. Tastes and snus are a strange breed.

As you try more and more, keep letting us know what you are liking and not. will make it easier for us to guide you further.

I can say I don't exactly "like" the smell.

I notice it and it's like I'm Pavlov's dog. I associate that smell with smooth tobacco goodness. I know that happiness follows closely behind that smell.

Some snus are more pronounced than others.

You'll get used to it after a while; exactly when depends on how much you use it, but it will happen. I can barely even detect that smell anymore......I know it sounds weird, but I wish a tin would hold that smell from start to finish. To me, it just indicates how fresh and moist it is.

the camel snus (which im sure isn't real snus), smells amazing when you open it! The odd thing about it is that if you open one of them up, the tobacco is basically a dry powder. Real snus is nice that it is moist and can be molded or "baked". I'm sure this general will take some time for the smell to grow on me. Regardless, I tried some tonight and it was quite good. Defiantly different to anything I've ever had in my life, the saltiness was strange. A good experience though, and I will have to try more. I love cigarettes but they are killing my lungs, so lets see how the snus experiment works out for me.

Don't stress the cigarette part. you want one, have one. I guarantee, backed by hundreds of folks experience here, the snus WILL take over. Just over time, you will come to prefer the nicotine delivery, especially the steady state, that snus provides.

And the saltiness, that's temporary. Your body will acclimate it self to it and soon, you will hardly taste it. Seems to take somewhere between 2 weeks and a month of use, your mileage may vary.
