    Sugar...WTF

I had mentioned earlier that I broke open a Skoal snus pouch and the contents looked like gun powder....silver/blackish colored sand.
Well after further examination....there are actually grains of sugar in them. I hate to think what keeping those in your mouth for hours a day would do to your teeth.

Exactly what happens to people's teeth that use American dip day in and day out. Of course, if you take good care of your choppers, it is not much different then eating a handful of hard candy a day. Not the best thing in the world for you, but it doesn't automatically mean you are going to lose every tooth.

I am pretty much out of snus. I expect my next delivery tomorrow. In the interim, I though I would sample a couple of U.S. dips. Normally when I want to use an American dip it's always Copenhagen Long Cut, and even though it's traditionally lower lipped, I upper decked it like snus, except I slide the pinch back closer to my mollers (sp).

This time I tried Cope Long Cut Straight, and Skoal Fine Cut wintergreen. All I can say is that these two dips actually hurt my teeth. The sweetness in them was way too much for this guy, seemed even sweeter then Camel Snus. I don't even think I will be able to finish the tins. Lesson learned.

Oh man... I remember when I still dipped... I was out of Copenhagen Long Cut so I bummed a lip from my buddy Palmer. All he ever dips is Grizzly, and dear God is that sweet. I couldn't keep it in for more than 20 minutes before I spit it out and said I'll deal with the withdrawal. Cope Long Cut compared to Swedish snus is still sweet, but Grizzly and Skoal are sweeter than candy.

However, you chew on candy and swallow the sugar quite quickly. Snus and dip are no swallowed; they stay directly on your teeth for several minutes to hours at a time, letting sugar seep into your teeth even more than eating candy. That's why American dip causes cavities while snus does not.

The sugar actually does not seep into your teeth. It is food for the bacteria that live on your teeth, and the reaction of the bacteria eating the sugar is what causes the damage to your teeth. And actually, if you do not brush your teeth immediately after eating candy, it does start the reaction with the bacteria as soon as it enters your mouth (it is the first stage of digestion, and we need that bacteria), so whether you swallow it quickly or not does not make much difference. The only real difference was how much sugar it was, and that it was at one point in your mouth.

As far as American dip goes, it is probably not the sugar that was hurting. American dip is fermented, and quite harsh on your gums and cheek. When you use it daily, part of the pain and irritation your body gets used to and another part you just get used to and don't feel anymore. I tried some dip the other day, and could not use it because it made my gums and cheek hurt so bad.

I can't use regular dip anymore... it dries out my mouth and tastes like rotten crap now.

just had a stomach virus so I had to start smoking again, snus just made my liquid insides even more volatile!

I really don't know why they don't try using artificial sweeteners(besides cost).

I have no opposition to the idea of sweet dip/snus, but they seem to go about it in the least healthy way.

I still keep a can of kodiak mint for taking showers. I pack a ton of it, It gives a nice kick, I can just spit in the drain, and right aftwards I brush my teeth. In that one instance I like it better than snus, but I could never go back to dip full-time

Nasal snuff is your friend! That is that evil cigarette addiction that is telling you that you have no other options. Also try other brands of snus. They can vary widely on how "hostile" the juice is. For me, Rape No.2 was one of the lightest I had tried, and I could probably drink a pitcher of the juice and not be bothered, while N&J is probably one of the roughest. It is about a 50/50 chance on whether the juice will make me queezy or not, although I kind of like that most of the time (I am odd, I know).

Artificial sweeteners are actually much cheaper than sugar in bulk. The main reason I would assume is because they used sugar since way back before artificials were available, and don't want to risk losing their customer base. Also, artificial sweeteners often have a bad after-taste. Camel Snus uses artificial sweeteners. Although it does not say it, I can taste that very distinctive after-taste.

I was actually getting headaches from camel snus. fake sweteners and I do not get along.

that's the main reason I went to real snus when I found out it's available!

I know what's in my body now, thank goodness too after smoking for so long I've probably knocked out 3 years of my life and smoked god knows what in my tobacco.

I really should get some nasal snuff, I found the brand I first tried the other day.
