    Another Excited Newbie

    Hi, Folks.

Lots of new things for me. First, I tried snus a few days ago after seeing one of those Camel SNUS signs. Frankly, it was pretty painful, but I hadn't had nicotine since giving up a 2.5 pack-a-day habit over 18 years ago, so I wasn't surprised. I'm not fond of the Camel SNUS, but I hated Camel cigarettes, so, not a surprise here either. Way too sweet and way too...uh...cheap. Or sumpin. Anyway, it was unpleasant. But, I missed my buzz and was never going back to cigarettes. And there was no way I was going to carry a spittoon around with me. Also. I don't do outdoors breaks in the hot summer and frigid winter. And my beloved doesn't do second-hand smoke.

So, it was almost with a choir of heavenly voices that I saw the sign for SNUS at the gas station. After a couple portions, I realized it was going to be a battle between crappy Camel tobacco and my desperate need to snus. So, I turned to the internet and found the Swedes. I did some research (thanks for all your information here!) and made my first order Sunday. (I spent all day Saturday trying to find ANYONE in the state of Iowa who had some real snus.)

Here is what I'm excitedly waiting for:

1 x General Mini White Portion
4 x Göteborgs Rapé Mini White Portion
    1 x General Mini Portion
2 x Tre Ankare Mini Portion
    2 x Mocca Pomegranate

I decided to go with minis - at least in the first batch - since I think I understand that Camels are about that size, and these are plenty big enough for me, after all these nicotine-free years. And, having a full set of dentures, I don't have a lot of room up-lip. Besides, I can always ramp up later if I need to. I know where they make the stuff ;-)

I hate licorice, and I don't want to get too sweet, so I thought this might be a good start. I figure maybe I'll man-up and try the Skruf Strong White Portion next time, or maybe even the Ettan. I'd have to do the larger, looser stuff at home though. And I'd have to convince myself to spend the extra cash on the icetool instead of more snus, since I can't see myself being handy enough to bake a proper pris without wasting a lot of tobacco practicing.

One more lovely surprise: I checked with the Iowa tax website, and - given that I understood [453A.43 Section 4 Para c] properly - I think I get to have up to 10 ounces at a time TOBACCO TAX FREE! I think that means more than two rolls of minis, with room for a bit of experimentation!

Anyway, I appreciate all the info I found here and thank you Guys for the forum. I'm open to any advice or correction.

    Welcome to the forums!! :^)

That looks like reasonable first order. You can give lös a try, but I think the dentures might be a problem. We had another guy here with dentures(I haven't seen him in awhile), and he had issues with the lös snus. It wouldn't hurt to try in any case. You're only out a few dollars if it doesn't work.

Once you've tried the snus in your order, you should be able to hone in on your taste preferences. We can then advise based on what you did, and didn't like about your order.

      Jeff, welcome to Snuson.

I don't think snus is available for sale retail in Iowa. You can go here, click on where to buy, and plug your zip code in. http://www.generalsnus.com/

Yes, since you have been so long without nicotine, mini's are probably the way to go, at least at first. But curious, why after 18 years, do you want to come back to nicotine?

Because you will get addicted to the stuff again. Snus is no different that way. A heck of a lot better way to be addicted, yes, but addiction all the same.

I self medicate with nicotine (ADHD). And snus has been a gift from the gods for getting nicotine better and safer than any other way I have ever tried. So since I will never give up nicotine, an easy choice for me.

But I am always curious what the attraction to snus is for folks not under control of that nicotine drive.

Yep. I found that out very shortly. I spent most of the day calling every tobacco outlet in a 50 mile radius. I made some calls the next day trying to find someone in the US who might ship me some.

I ended up buying from SnusCentral. I was amazed that all the sites seemed to cost the same, give or take a nickel. SnusCentral had a discount for first time buyers. Since I had to clear the purchase past My Beloved Comptroller, the discount helped :-)

But I am always curious what the attraction to snus is for folks not under control of that nicotine drive.

First, and this is something I want to be very clear about, this is not a case of becoming re-addicted to nicotine. I was never not addicted. I smoked for 18 years. Most of that was 2.5 packs of Marlboros per day. After several EXTREMELY painful attempts to quit, I was able to make it work with the patches. (Which I had to pay for myself, BTW, since this was before insurance covered them.) I’ve managed to stay off cigarettes completely for the last 19 years – not because I had kicked the addiction, but because I was scared to death of what had happened to my health.

At any rate, I have since been constantly aware of the fact that the addiction was still lurking. As recently as a month ago, I found myself purposely standing downwind from a smoker just so I could catch a whiff. This scared me. I cannot afford to smoke. I’ve become diabetic, and smoking would certainly lead to the amputation of some limb or another, if I didn’t drown in my own phlegm some night first.

I am Autistic. As you might understand, having ADHD, I have spent most of my life trying to mute the senses that are too strong, and stimulate the rest - to find some balance and control. I’ve tried the same thing with alcohol and various other chemicals, and with other things I won't mention here. Simply stopping the self-medication leaves me not much better off. Anxious, depressed, and always off balance. It’s clear I will never be without some self-controllable-self-medication, so I better do my best to choose wisely. ;-) Something I can afford, that won't kill me outright or land me in jail or alone.

So, perhaps you understand where I'm coming from. Snus is obviously not the ideal solution. But, given my mind and my body, and the fact that I'll lose my hateful - but essential - job if I fall asleep on the phone again, this is the best solution I've found so far.

I'm actually pleased you asked that question. I've been not-asking it of myself for a few days now. Glad to have it out.

You're a very perceptive person, sagedil. I officially grant you permission to ask me anything else you may wonder. :-)

No Jeff, that was a really, really good answer. Clearly you have thought this through and are going about meeting your needs now in the best way, bar none. WAY better than pharmaceutical nicotine. Like myself, you are purposely looking to maintain some nicotine in your body, and snus very well might be the ideal situation. If nicotine makes your life better, than snus is the very best thing you can ever do. And a bonus, it is much more satisfying than smoking. The nicotine uptake is slower, but it stays present in your bloodstream way better and longer than cigarettes. So no longer that up and down roller coaster effect.

As I alluded to before, I self medicate with nicotine. I have posted a number of times the links that show that nicotine has been identified as being as effective as Ritalin at treating ADHD. As a meth head from 20 years ago, I simply can not treat my situation with amphetamines. I would be abusing again in less than a week. My symptoms are about 20 times worse with no nicotine in my system, and I am almost fully functional with it. And snus has been the greatest discovery, the greatest gift I ever gave myself.

So welcome again. As I am fond of saying, you have a wonderful journey of self discovery ahead of you.

And I am glad you ordered through Snus Central. That site is run by a friend of here.

Welcome to the forum. If you hated camel snus than you most likely will LOVE swedish snus lol. It seems like a lot of us use nicotine to self medicate. It makes me angry that drug companies can make a killing off of various chemicals in which who the hell knows what they are really doing to you, and yet nicotine is so frowned upon.

Oh well, welcome aboard, and I hope you find some you really like in your first order!!

Jeff, welcome to the forum. You are truly among those who will help you with your journey, as they have and continue to assist me in mine. This forum is full of information that will be useful and enlightening as well as funny. I enjoy it quite a bit.

We all have our reasons for using snus, but the common thread is that we've chosen Swedish snus to get our beloved/hated nicotine. Snus has been a life saver as well as penny saver for me. It is the least expensive and safest form of tobacco use I have found to date, not to mention the best tasting. There are multiple flavors as I'm sure you've already found while placing your first order. Which by the way looks to be a good order.

I personally love the Gote Rape and Gen white portions! You may want to try roda lacket too if those work out for you. The nic content is 8mg/portion but I have a feeling you'll like the wider variety in the regular portions and will eventually step up to them.

Feel free to ask any questions that you like, most of us here are more than willing to answer them, as we too were in your shoes. Have fun and enjoy snusing.

                  Hooray!

Well, the trick is simple: buy one more tin of Camel SNUS, since it looks like your Swedish won't show up until after you run out completely. Then, when you return home, your mailbox will be full of joy and happiness.

                  My first order is here!

So far, I've had one portion of Göteborgs Rapé Mini White Portion and two portions of the Mocca Pomegranate. I've frozen five of my ten cans, and put five in the refrigerator. Tomorrow I'll try the Tre Ankare Mini Portion and the General Mini Portion.

The unopened tin of Camel will sit until I run into someone who already smokes and wants to try snus. If I really like them, I may share a portion of my Swedish bounty, but I'll have to really, really like them ;-)

Now that I've tried the real thing, I can say - without a doubt - that the Camel contains things I certainly dont want in my mouth. I know, for certain, it was chock full of aspartame. I suspect it was simply a chunk of Camel cigarette tobacco with a crapload of sweetener. The Swedish snus - though it will take a few days to get used to the strong, forthright flavors - is much more wholesome and comfortable.

One of the concerns I had with the camel is that I had to switch sides every time, since it felt like my mouth was being damaged. I've come to believe that the salt and sodium carbonate in the Swedish snus are actually healing that damage! At any rate, they dont burn anywhere as strongly or long as the Camel did, and the skin seems much more healthy.

I am extremely satisfied with my choice to go Swedish :-)

One thing I did notice: I think customs opened my package. It was sealed with cellophane tape, which didn't seem odd to me (I have no idea how SnusCentral packages their shipments), but one of the cans of Tre Ankare had been opened. I guess they took the customs label seriously when it said the package "may be opened officially." All the portions were in the tin, but the lid was certainly open and twisted off-register. I'll pretend they wore gloves.

Anyway, my head is swimming from nicotine, flavor, and self satisfaction.

Off to try the Tre :-)

                    My Second Order

Well, I'm hooked. I've given away my Camel SNUS - good riddance - but I kept one of the tins for used portions in those situations where I can't get to the usual waste receptacle.

I've found my favorites so far are Tre Ankare Mini Portion, Göteborgs Rapé Mini White Portion, and Mocca Pomegranate.

The Pomegranate seemed to have the least nicotine, though it apparently has 5mg to the Göteborgs' 4mg. The Tre Ankare also has 4mg.

The Pomegranate is my favorite for when I just want something gentle and special. A bit of a treat. Especially great after a meal, for desert. It lasts for 30 minutes to an hour.

The Göteborgs is a good and reliable. The first few days, it burned a bit for a minute of two, but I've adapted and that has become much less painful. It lasts an hour or so, and has a good taste throughout.

The Tre Ankare was a surprise. Not only did I get a real buzz off the nicotine, but the tastes actually improved as time went on. I'd read a few posts (after I'd already ordered) from people who didn't like the Tre, so I was prepared to regret. Instead, I think it has become my favorite.

My second order is entirely Tre Ankare and Mocca. I still have about 3 or 4 cans of the Göteborgs, and assorted Generals. I didn't fall in love with the General - especially non-white General. I suspect I will either keep it for emergencies when a shipment is late, or use it to entice Camels users into the Swedish world. Who knows, I may develop a taste for it later.

In case you're wondering, there are reasons for my focus on white mini portions. I have a full upper set of dentures. This means I have a lot less clearance to put snus. Anything larger pushes the plate out of position, and simply hurts. Anything moister than white tends to pool up under the plate and emerge at the top of the back of my throat. Not pleasant.

So, it's white minis for me. And I'm so glad to find three reliable, tasty, brands. This order will give me a little depth in my favorites. I will probably try a few others in my third order, but I'm not sure what else there is for a white mini that isn't licorice or General. We'll see. Plus I have some more samples from general coming - I believe in second chances ;-)

General is defiantly an odd one at first, but It'll grow on you if you try it again. The original portions are heavenly.

It's interesting to see someone independently reporting on the mini portions.

I'm curious how many you're using a day?

For me typically a mini is only enough after a long day of snusing, so it's not really cost effective to get them. I would be all over a normal strength(8mg) mini, but for some reason it hasn't been done yet
