Snus is designed to be race specific.
If you are white you use the white portion, black you use the back portion. brown, the brown portion, and so on.

Those of mixes parentage use loose.

        LOL

OK, so playing the straight man here. White versions are made differently. they are dryer, and the flavor is usually a bit more muted but will usually last longer than regulars. I made the switch to mostly whites about a year ago when suddenly, the flavors of the regulars were just coming on too strong and I was spitting them out way too fast. I prefer the more gentle flavor profile that Whites give.

        From Buysnus...

The classical portion-packed snus (original) has dark and moistened portion pouches, which produce a more rapid secretion of saliva. The taste and scent are clear. White is a new portion-packed snus that run less and taste longer

The white pouches will be drier on the outside with the moist snus inside. But that goes away as soon as it enters the mouth.

Regular portions have a higher moisture content to them, and tend to get more juice running immediately. White portions are dryer, so they tend to be milder in flavor with less juice building up too.

            The short version is this.
The original portions go through an extra process where the 'juice' is put on the outside of the portions. So usually there is a wet feeling to them.
The white portions don't have this extra step so they are dry to the touch.

The white are supposed to store better.
With the original when you put them in your mouth the flavor start in right away. The white takes a little while to get going.

I think it's really just a matter of personnel preference.

The confusing part is that some places design their white portions from black material.

I "general"ly prefer white portions because I can keep an opened can in my car, or pack and they do tend to last longer, keep better etc. I'd suggest that any portion user try Roda Lackett white portion, it's IMO, one of the best portion snus ever created. Catch white eucalyptus is also outstanding, and both of these portions can go unrefrigerated without getting skunky or weird tasting. :P

ddnadb is spot-on. It gets even more confusing as in some white portions the moisture-content in the tobacco is higher than other brown portions.

i thought it was the portion material that made the difference.

No, it is the process in which they are made that makes the difference

Otherwise known as Jim Crow snus. The Swedes aren't as culturally as advanced as us...

Whites are the real snus. The non white portions are used snus portions, collected mostly from snus factory employers or on the streets of Stockholm and Göteborg.

Just a general observation, but whites have an overall saltier taste to me than their regular or los counterparts. Like sagedil pointed out, they have a more subdued flavor to me that allows me to keep them in longer.
