    Stupid American question....

How do you properly pronounce SNUS?

Is it snoose or is it pronouced as it reads snus (like the the word US)?

I've been pronouncing as sn-us but when I called a smoke shop in Austin to see if they had Camel Snus the guy said no but we carry General "Snoose".

I think it sn-us because for the most part us Americans are the only ones bad about our vowels having 20 different sounds.

To simplify does SNUS rhyme with BUS? The sales guy at the tobacco shop made it rhymewith moose?

As I said when I introduced myself, get ready for lots of stupid American noob questions ops:

Well, I pronounce it 'snoose'. It just sounds natural to me, being a native German speaker. I believe, the Swedish pronunciation also is 'snoose'. I'm able to read Swedish quite a bit, but have never been in Sweden, so I'm not absolutely sure.

I just visited the swedish Wikipedia-article about snus to answer your question and the article states, that the word 'snus' even stems from the German word 'Schnauze' (mouth). Thats funny!

However, one of our Swedish members could clear this better.

I personally wouldn't have a problem to talk with an american about 'sn-us', so why not pronounce it, like you feel comfortable with?

    Cheers!

Words like moose or snooze comes about as close to the Swedish pronunciation as possible (notice that the actual pronunciation of snus is just a tiny bit shorter than both moose and snooze - imagine speaking it out faster and with a shorter/harder s-sound than -se in the end).

Actually - when using 'moose' and 'snooze' as guidelines, it comes closer to the way we Danes pronounce it, but the difference is not that big (foreign listeners might not realize the difference at all).

Anyway ... you could also turn to youtube and check out one of the many snus videos from Swedish users

Would that then be a combination of "snuhss" and "snooss"?

I tend to say it that way. I used to say 'snuhss' (like bus)...I have never said it like 'snoos' (like noose) but now I sorta take out some of the "uh" added a smidgen of "oo" and that's the way I like to say it. Pure "snooss" just sounds gay to me. and "snuhss" sounds like a ripoff of snuff.

^ Yes, thats about it. I don't think you can come any closer unless you are willing to spend some time in Scandinavia.

ah, screw it, just watch the northerner guy say it

yeah, I guess it's rather closer to the british 'oo' than the american 'oo'...the american 'oo' is way back in the throat while the former is much more forward. Phonetics... :?
