    Snus Review - Discreet snus

Tom from American Smokeless Tobacco in Virginia sent me a nice little sample pack of Discreet snus. Here is a breakdown of what I got and my thoughts about them.

First off, the follow the traditional domestic profile of being a sweet snus. If you don't like sweet snus but like domestic dip, these might be up your alley.

Another thing about them is the price point. Tom mentioned that they are looking to sell these for $0.99 per pouch which works out to be a great price compared to other domestics.

They are all packaged in a small resealable pouch and each one includes 10 portions. They are a moist snus and are mini in size.

According to Tom have less than a normal 1 gram portion's worth of nicotine. (more on this later on)

    Flavors and thoughts:

    Full Flavor

I opened the pouch and was overwhelmed by the same smell from Phillip Morris's 1847. 1847 has been the ONLY snus that I threw away. I just couldn't take the flowery highlights that overload the senses.

I was very leery about trying this but I powered through it. Not surprising, it is a sweet 1847. The sweetness takes the edge off the flowery highlights.

Sweetness scale: (Camel frost being a 10, Ettan being a 1)

7, as long as you don't mess with the portion. The more you mess with it the more sweetness gets thrown off.

I do not think that if this flavor were available locally that I would buy it.

    Overall rating:

5/10 - Only that high because if you leave it alone, you just get subtle hints of flavor. If you flick it, you get the full monty!

    Strawberry

WOW this is strawberry! The flavor is nice and doesn't taste too artificial. The flavor lasts a good long while and isn't too overpowering.

    Sweetness:

    7

    Overall rating:

    7/10 - I love strawberries

    Emerald Ice

This was the first one I tried. I really dig the flavor. It tastes like spearmint gum in your mouth but it doesn't loose its flavor or get old. I had this one in for a touch over an hour and it still tasted great at the end.

    Sweetness:

    5/10

    Overall rating:

    8/10 - I love spearmint!

    Peach

They hit the peach flavor right on this one. I really dig skoal peach and this has that full flavor peach taste but with some tobacco hints towards the end of the time in your mouth. It is sweet, but peaches are supposed to be :P

    Sweetness:

    8/10

    Overall rating:

    8/10 - I love peaches too :P

    Cool Mint

This one tasted like peppermint to me and again was pretty good. I am not a huge peppermint fan but this was like having a mint in my mouth for a good long while.

    Sweetness:

    7/10

    Overall rating:

7/10 - I am not a huge fan of peppermint flavors

Some things in common with all of the flavors:

The packaging is pretty nice and the pouches are mini sized. The portion material is very nice and comfortable in my mouth.

As far as the sweetness is concerned, the less you messed with them in your mouth the less 'sweetness" came across.

I like the packs for a few reason mainly that they don't look like a tin of chew in your pocket. I still get funny looks sometimes if I forget to take a can out of my pocket before I teach a workshop.

The nicotine content was suprisingly good. I was expecting it to be a very light amount but I was fine as I tested them today and into this evening. I only use normal 8mg portions though.

    Where to get them:

That I am not sure about. I got the impression from Tom that his company is relatively new and is just starting to grow.

I can say though that if I were buying a domestic snus, I liked some of these flavors more than Camel snus.

If anyone else has tried them, share your thoughts!

Even though no one responded, if anyone wants to give any of the flavors a try, let me know via PM. I'll throw em in an envelope on to yas.

Do you know the nicotine and pH levels of Discreet snus? I've heard of the brand before but I'd be interested to see if the nicotine delivery is actually sufficient.

They sound interesting. Not really my cup-o-tea, but I'll pick some up if I ever see them on the shelf.

Tom the guy from American Smokeless said they were less than normal Swedish snus but when I tried them I was fine with the nicotine. My wife who uses Camel and Mocca mini's got a buzz from the ones she tried.

As far as PH, they have about the same mouth feel as mocca's and Camels. I think those two are pretty similar.

This was the first snus I tried, I got it at a local Smoker Friendly in Boulder Co. They were 1.99 per pouch where I bought them. They are not bad, but similar to Camel, and I'm sure if I got them now, I wouldn't get a nic fix from them, and would probably find them too sweet. I've tried the Peach the Full Flavor the Emerald Ice, and I thought a Wintergreen as well, but I might be mistaken... This and Klondike were my first forays into the world of snus.

Edit: The Emerald Ice I think was the wintergreen tasting one, and I've had the cool mint as well. If I remember correctly the Emerald Ice was my favorite.

Slightly off topic here -- but I'm sitting in a meeting the other day and I had a massive bulge in my lip trying to talk to some senior people and I could feel them looking away while thinking 'wtf has this guy got wrong with his lip?'

In conclusion, I've made the decision to try and get myself onto something a little more 'discreet' for these situations. I'm a big fan of classic snus's -- General, Pall Mall, Skruf etc. not really a huge fan of Ettan but been known to take to a few rolls of Lucky Strike (you get the idea).

Any suggestions on a good quality, hard hitting mini portion for me to use?

              Appreciate your input guys!

I don't think you can get both mini, and hard hitting. I don't really use minis, so all I can recommend in that regard is to try a few different brands. You might also want to try using normal portions, but put them farther back in your mouth, almost like using leaf chew, but maybe a little farther forward. When I use portions, I generally keep the pouch about where my incisors are. There all but invisible in that position, and you can still talk regularly.

Mocca + is sadly gone but Taboca has a new strong mini. No word on the nicotine content in it as of yet.

                    In answer to itchystiches question

I have only been snusing a few days now but strangely the only snus out the ones i have used so far that i felt a little kick with was those little tiny wise citrus/menthol they are only 6mg but release it quicker from what i have heard. They are also so small so you could put 1 in each side for a discreet 12mg. I found more of a kick with the 6mg Wise than i did with the Skruf Stark portions.

It may just be because i am so new to snus but maybe a more experienced guy could say if i am correct or way off target?

                    Cheers Lee.

Edit - Of course these are nothing like the traditional snus in taste etc, i just re-read your question.

                      Thanks for the responses.

I'll be sure to look into both Tobacco's new minis (although I really disliked their full size :P) and wise... the thing which gets to me with wise, is why don't BS ship it?? I could easily throw it in with the rest of my orders then and it'd be happy days

Oh you use BS then? I have used northener so far, how do you find BS compare?

Hmm... I'm a big fan just because they seem to deliver quickly to the UK (which is where I'll be residing for the next 18 months or so it seems), and whenever I've had issues like missing cans whatever, they've been very apologetic and sorted the problem out straight away... just generally get the 'small company' feel going on which I really like.

Also they have a sweet points system if you're gonna be using a lot of snus, where you get your 6th roll half price (I believe?).

Might have to reconsider my options thought when I come back stateside as I believe the shipping can become prohibitively expensive if you make small orders, although they do kinda guide you towards finding the cheapest shipping option by suggesting how much more you can fit in the current shipping price bracket, if that makes sense?

My old friend, shipping isn't that bad on small orders. Both Northerner and Buysnus, the more you order, the more expensive the shipping is. But we have no pesky EU taxes here, so ordering it from the states would have to be much cheaper, no??

So when ARE you coming back stateside??

                              Yooo sage,

Actually planning on coming over on vacation to see the family in PA then down to Raleigh this fall. We'll have to tear it up and grab some beers or something while I'm over yeah?

Would have loved to move back this year, but I landed this killer job just outside London and you know how it is....

                              How's everything with you?
