Tom from American Smokeless Tobacco in Virginia sent me a nice little sample pack of Discreet snus. Here is a breakdown of what I got and my thoughts about them.
First off, the follow the traditional domestic profile of being a sweet snus. If you don't like sweet snus but like domestic dip, these might be up your alley.
Another thing about them is the price point. Tom mentioned that they are looking to sell these for $0.99 per pouch which works out to be a great price compared to other domestics.
They are all packaged in a small resealable pouch and each one includes 10 portions. They are a moist snus and are mini in size.
According to Tom have less than a normal 1 gram portion's worth of nicotine. (more on this later on)
Flavors and thoughts:
Full Flavor
I opened the pouch and was overwhelmed by the same smell from Phillip Morris's 1847. 1847 has been the ONLY snus that I threw away. I just couldn't take the flowery highlights that overload the senses.
I was very leery about trying this but I powered through it. Not surprising, it is a sweet 1847. The sweetness takes the edge off the flowery highlights.
Sweetness scale: (Camel frost being a 10, Ettan being a 1)
7, as long as you don't mess with the portion. The more you mess with it the more sweetness gets thrown off.
I do not think that if this flavor were available locally that I would buy it.
Overall rating:
5/10 - Only that high because if you leave it alone, you just get subtle hints of flavor. If you flick it, you get the full monty!
Strawberry
WOW this is strawberry! The flavor is nice and doesn't taste too artificial. The flavor lasts a good long while and isn't too overpowering.
Sweetness:
7
Overall rating:
7/10 - I love strawberries
Emerald Ice
This was the first one I tried. I really dig the flavor. It tastes like spearmint gum in your mouth but it doesn't loose its flavor or get old. I had this one in for a touch over an hour and it still tasted great at the end.
Sweetness:
5/10
Overall rating:
8/10 - I love spearmint!
Peach
They hit the peach flavor right on this one. I really dig skoal peach and this has that full flavor peach taste but with some tobacco hints towards the end of the time in your mouth. It is sweet, but peaches are supposed to be :P
Sweetness:
8/10
Overall rating:
8/10 - I love peaches too :P
Cool Mint
This one tasted like peppermint to me and again was pretty good. I am not a huge peppermint fan but this was like having a mint in my mouth for a good long while.
Sweetness:
7/10
Overall rating:
7/10 - I am not a huge fan of peppermint flavors
Some things in common with all of the flavors:
The packaging is pretty nice and the pouches are mini sized. The portion material is very nice and comfortable in my mouth.
As far as the sweetness is concerned, the less you messed with them in your mouth the less 'sweetness" came across.
I like the packs for a few reason mainly that they don't look like a tin of chew in your pocket. I still get funny looks sometimes if I forget to take a can out of my pocket before I teach a workshop.
The nicotine content was suprisingly good. I was expecting it to be a very light amount but I was fine as I tested them today and into this evening. I only use normal 8mg portions though.
Where to get them:
That I am not sure about. I got the impression from Tom that his company is relatively new and is just starting to grow.
I can say though that if I were buying a domestic snus, I liked some of these flavors more than Camel snus.
If anyone else has tried them, share your thoughts!
