I just received my first two cans of real snus in the mail today. It is a can of Skruf Stark and a can of General Extra Sterk. I know that it is normal for the snus to have a slightly off-putting smell, or is that just my opinion? And the taste is something to get used to. However, I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion for a strong snus, that kept the punch but lost the stink and taste?

Honestly, your senses are probably just overwhelmed by snus, especially if you just started.
Typically, especially in nasal snuff, a strong Ammonia odor means its very fresh almost straight from the factory condition.
If you are looking for a strong snus in portion form which may be easier to start with id say ...................hmmmmmm, probably Skruf Stark, lol.
You are going to notice more aroma and flavor on stronger snus, at least my trials have shown that.
The smell of Onyx isnt off-putting at all, 11mg nic, but the overall flavor profile isnt for some.
A lot of people, myself included, LOVE ONYX and swear by it as a portion, but some people dont like the citrusy notes that come trough more than they do in Original General.
Its still got that peppery tobacco note, but a more prodominant citrus tang to it.
Im sure more of the Hardcore Stark lovers will be able to help you better, but theres my .2 c.
BTW, Welcome to what I believe to be the best forum on the net with some of the more educated posters than youll find elsewhere.
People here are very informative and passionate about their tobacco and world views and im sure youll see the wealth of knowledge on here, its fun to browse some of the very old posts as well to see how the snus online world has evolved.

Thanks, I'm sure it doesn't help that the first snus I've had was the camel stuff and when I usually think of tobacco like that I go straight to dip. The one thing I notice however, is that it doesn't taste like tobacco as I'm used to it. Cigars, pipes, cigarettes, dip, chew all have a similiar taste although each distinctly different. Snus has nothing near this taste. I did notice that when it comes to flavor, the Skruf is a bit milder. I imagine white pouches aren't as strong tasting either. I'll just have to experiment.

Welcome to the site, and fine Swedish snus! Grim is correct, the smell means it's fresh. I will agree with you that at first it's offputting, but if you'll leave your can open for a bit, the smell abates. The ammonia smell is a byproduct of the processing of the snus.
As for a recommendation, I absolutely love General Onyx, and I also really like Claq qui. Both are low end sterk portions, but both have great flavor. Like Grim said, the Onyx definitely has more of a pepper and citrus flavor, but the Claq qui is a pepper and fruit/floral flavor..have yet to nail this one down. However, I have a portion of Claq qui every morning with my coffee...it's fantastic.
Have you thought of trying any of the regular strength portions, they have 8mg of nicotine and are a good "all day" snus. If you're looking for more of a tobacco flavor, then try Ettan, Granit, LD, Gustavus, PM 1847, Grovsnus, and there are many more. Most of them are 8mg of nic per portion, Grovsnus has a svart (strong) portion.
Typically I use a mix of strong and reg portions through the day.....just a thought. Good luck and ask questions and read the boards, that's how I learned.
Have fun and try some different flavors you'll probably be surprised.

Alright, thanks for all of the help! I'll have to put a variety of snus's in my next order, not to difficult either considering it's so damn cheap. I'm sure after a few days of it I'll begin to get used to it, and not to sound hoity-toity but find some of the subtleties in the flavor's. I just wish they made a Skruf Stark strength snus with the flavor of the camel mild.
