Nasvay- smokeless tobacco product from Kyrgyzstan/Uzbekistan

Nasvay is widely used in CIS countries such as Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan: in 2005 over 40% of the rural male population was using it.

Nasvay - nicotine containing product. It consist of small green balls, grains with the unpleasant smell and the taste.
It is made in household conditions. Basic components of nasvay are cheap tobacco, slaked lime (instead of lime it can be used hen dung or camel dry manure), component of different plants, oil. For an improvement in the taste the seasonings sometimes are added.

I've heard about stuff like that and honestly thought it was some sort of myth (at least the dung part, which we used to joke about as kids). If the stuff really exist it can't be healthy at all ... like the Gutka that has been discussed somewhere else in here. As my non-danish speaking friend from India describe it (in a weird combination of English and Spanish): "No no, don't Gutka ... Gutka very, very malo for you"

Have any of you ever chewed coca-leaves? I did a lot in Bolivia once. Tastes like crap but hits like insanely strong coffee ... amazingly it got me through a severe case of mountain sickness!

Alieva on Russian neweurasia discusses the growing popularity of the “national” light drug nasvai. In her investigation she mentions that young people in Central Asia chose nasvai because it’s cheap. Alieva writes :

“One of the reasons of the growing popularity of nasvai is its low price. It can be compared to the price of sunflower seeds. In Kazakhstan for instance you can pay 10 American cents and get a pack of nasvai consisting of 30 portions. In Kyrgyzstan you can purchase the very same pack for only 5 American cents. When nasvai gets transported to Russia its price “skyrockets” as high as $3 for the pack”.

According to Alieva there are various recipes, which are used for preparing nasvai. The most popular components that are normally included are tobacco or the plant, called “nas”, special Central Asian makhorka, slaked lime, plant’s ash, and, as one of the most exotic components, chicken droppings and camel’s excrements. In her post Alieva also warns that the danger of chewing nasvai is underestimated, since according to specialists nasvai consumption can cause far more serious problems such as tongue and lips cancer. Though, it is still one of the post popular drugs in Central Asia where it is called a “hookah for the poor”.

Sounds like it would be terrible for one's health...much like gutka, I would think, if not even worse. Slaked lime is very corrosive, the stuff is likely fermented in the manure, blech... I'll stick with snus :shock:

No way!

My "appetite" for hen dung and camel dry manure has already been satisfied by the cigarettes, I've smoked in my life. Exspecially the "Lights", of which I've smoked only two or three packs, just out of curiosity, reminded me of that certain rural smell.
