I used to be in the tobacco business and took tobacco quite seriously.

I'll only use a tobacco product that's as pure as possible.

US cigarette companies will not disclose how they treat tobacco and what additives are within these cigarettes. Ditto on other tobacco products such as Copenhagen, Red Man chewing tobacco or Swisher Sweet Cigars.

Labeling is a tricky issue. Take for example (in the USA) White Castle hamburgers which are yummy! 100% Beef means that only beef products are used in these burgers. What is not stated is that most of the beef in White Castle burgers is (reportedly) beef liver.

    Beef liver is 100% beef.

So when I read Winston Cigarettes packaging that states "100% pure tobacco without additives...", well, this doesn't take into account the processing or the paper in which the cigarettes are rolled.

Forgive me for preaching to the choir but I'm very skeptical when it comes to any product released by any cigarette manufacturer in the US. But that's just my personal opinion.

Talked to the camel rep today, camel snus is no longer manufactured in Sweden. Camel has brought the BAT process over to North Carolina, said it was the same process just manufactured here to save on costs. Picked some up today and it seems the same (still a little too sweet) as the BAT manufactured ones I had in the spring. Although the "made in Sweden" label was a good assurance that the process had not been altered and the product "Americanized"

I find, a "sold also in Sweden"-label would be a real proof of quality. I always wondered, why Camel snus was made in Sweden, but sold only on a small testmarket in the U.S. Seems, like something is wrong with this product.

However, I don't mind (overall rather seldomly) using other products than snus, namely some brands of traditional chewing tobacco, which aren't made according to (swedish) food laws, but taste good and surely aren't too unhealthy either (can anything really be unhealthy, compared with cigarettes? ).

But yes, the previous marketing strategy of Camel snus just leaves some kind of a doubtful feeling. I don't believe, it's 'quality-stuff'.

        Cheers!

I went into a gas station last night and saw the mini-fridge with the oblong cans in it. $5.59 per can!!!! I don't see how they are gonna break into the market at that price.

I'm in Texas -- I don't smoke, but I think smokes are a little cheaper. Just a new product with nobody over here knowing what it is, this just seems pricey. Not that I care either way what happens with Camel Snus........I get my stuff from the mothership.

                blah

I found this on google, it's a little old information mixed with some specifics on Camels version of snus. Heres the link. If the link doesn't work just type "snus camel nitrosamine level" into google, and it should be the fourth link down.

I've tried spice, and am working on frost right now. Frost isn't that great. The price is too high ($3.99 not including tax) when compared with what you can order online.

Picked up a tin of Frost in Orlando.

Really nothing to write home about - it was too sweet and the pouches are really tiny.

I bought a tin of the Camel "original" on a lark... what the heck, right?

This crap tastes like Coca Cola! I have no idea what the flavoring agents are but it's similar to a Coke.

Amazing. $6 US for some funky, TINY portions (half a portion!) that taste like sugar water and some flavoring that tastes like Coca Cola. Puh!

I ordered a roll of Goteborgs Rape portions in protest. Camel snus is garbage.

Camel snus is how I discovered snus to begin with. I saw it in Raleigh, NC (one of the test markets) and had to inquire as to what the hell it was (in about those words). The response was pretty much, "I have no clue, read this pamphlet." So I bought some. I am a smoker (Camel) and a dipper (Skoal), I also enjoy cigars and my pipe, as well as the occasional nasal snuff (English; American makes me sneeze too much). I just like tobacco. I tried it out and liked it very much; it was the original. I did some research on the web about snus, finding this site as well as some stuff on youtube, and placed an order. I actually got tired of the Camel snus before my order even arrived, and it's definitely due to the aspartame (or whatever the hell they use to sweeten it). I finally got home to my order of Swedish snus; at first I was offended by theoldsearock's comment about it being garbage, but now I see what he was talking about. It doesn't even compare to what I will now call "real snus". I also tried a can of spice, which I didn't like right off the bat. I have tried the General lös and Nick and Johnny lös, and I have to say, Camel may get you to notice what it is, but when you try the real thing, you kind of feel cheated as to what they presented in place of this stuff.

                            good for you

It's nice you realized the true chasm that is the difference between these american attempts at snus and the real swedish deal.
My guess is the american stuff is "made" or "geared" towards what the manufacturer THINKS is what the american tastes are and want.
Perhaps these folks think that the saltiness and nic strength will put off americans from trying it.

On the other hand I'm glad they're marketing this Camel/Marlboro candy snus junk as the real effect it's having is getting the curious users like you to search the internet for info and thereby finding The Real Thing©

There shouldn't BE any friggin' sweeteners in snus G*D DAYIM! *barf*
How the hell can I for example enjoy beer while there's the equivalent of a soft Tic-Tac messing up my taste buds. Revolting, I tell ya!

I discovered SNUS because Marlboro is test marketing their product in the Ft. Worth, Texas area. I liked the concept but was disappointed in the product. This prompted me to search SNUS online and boy am I glad that I did! I'm enjoying my sample pack and have placed a second order. I feel like I've become a member of a secret fraternity (at least here in the US)
