How long do you have to mellow the cans?

I just got my first order in today and all of the cans smell very strongly of ammonia. I can taste a difference between the brands, but they all taste of ammonia too. Im reading here that that should subside at some point, but how long does that generally take?

I also read on another forum that the ammonia smell could be that the snus is "bad". Could this be the case? I ordered from northerner.com and it took about 10 days to get here. The exp date on all the cans I looked at is 8/09.

I am eager to try them but they really are stout with the ammonia smell and taste.

    Thanks!

For Swedish snus the ammonia smell is good. It's a by product of processing the tobacco. I will generally give it a day after breaking the seal to mellow/age.

My first Swedish order smelled strongly of ammonia also. I opened all of the cans and let them air out for about an hours or so. Then went at it. The taste was not what I expected starting from American Camel. After a while, your taste buds will adapt and so will the smell. It doesn't mean it's spoiled (that was my first thought also). It's just an acquired taste and smell.

Thanks. Good to know. I was worried because they are like really strong. I opened all the cans, put the lids back on and am just letting them chill in the fridge.

I usually wait between 2 to 3 seconds after opening.

            That's my winning strategy also.

                2 to 3 seconds? Bah!

I go right for it and shovel the whole damn can in my mouth and open it with my teeth.

                Opening cans are for pussies!

Just kidding though as others have said the ammonia smell indicates freshness.

Yes, ammonia good, means it was just made. Same with Snuff.

If you must let it dissipate, you should notice a marked difference even after an our. By the next day, it will be completely gone. but honestly, I stopped even noticing long, long ago. use a bit, i promise, you won't notice it anymore too.

Yeah, you'll stop noticing the ammonia smell after a week or so, and you'll be able to smell complex differences between snus brands...also you'll probably note that it tastes very salty...this also starts to subside with more use and you'll be able to pick up on more distinct and subtle flavors.

Everyone has already told you what I would have told you about the smell. It abates after a day or so of being open. The smell almost kept me from trying it, but I'm so glad I sacked up and tried it anyway.

The flavors when I first started Swedish snus, well..they all tasted similar to me. My tastebuds were jacked up from years of smoking I suppose. Now after two months, it's like trying new flavors of snus when I retry something that I initially disliked. Keep at it...you'll soon find out why we love snus.

It's getting better. I have no idea if the cans still smell because I decided to stop smelling them

From the northerner top 10 package so far I like the Ettan best. I figure it is a plain offering but it's tasty to me and that's what Im loading at work today.

I was the same way but Ettan didn't come in my first package. The lös was in my 2nd order and then I tried the white portions on my 3rd order. Now on my 4th order with a half a roll of Ettan Vit and a can of Ettan original. I guess I'm drawn to it more because it's less salty than others I've tried. I do still enjoy General White and RL along with a few others though.

I took a whiff of them a few minutes ago from the fridge. Mostly they are getting better. The general portion and Skuf ES are just like taking a whiff outta a bottle of ammonia. Not a little ammonia scent but like full out eye burning window cleaner. They even taste like ammonia.

I talked to a guy at getsnus and he said that happens sometimes when they stay hot too long in transit. bummer I am gonna re-order the general and skruf from getsnus and see if the shorter transit time makes a difference.

Apparently it is also a good idea to let them cool in the fridge before opening them after you get them.

As a test, I have the general just sitting open here for the last hour and it just reaks. Im gonna let it continue to set and see what happens
