Finally got my first 'real' snus!!

So my first order from northerner showed up today :

    1 Diplomat White Portion
1 Göteborgs Rapé No2 White Portion
    1 skruf tranbär mini portions

    ...and I have to say...

    WOW!!
much different than I had expected! In the three days that I had been using Camel Snus Original, I guess I had gotten used to the size and taste. Camel Snus is the same size as the skruf mini, and the first portion I tried was the Diplomat - and I felt like I had a flowery roll of quarters under my lip  . After about 15 minutes I had to ditch the portion, I had just gotten in the car and my first experience with stronger, larger snus was making rush hour a little stressfull .

When I got home, I popped in a G.R.No2 and I can say the taste is better, still very potpourri like but better (maybe I have gotten used to the super mild and plain Camel), the saltiness starts coming on as it begins to run and I felt a little nauseous (sp?). Hmmm, starting to feel like maybe I'm not hardcore enough to snus ops:

So, about an hour later I tried the skruf. Mini portion may definitely be my ballgame... call me a little girl, but I guess I can't hang with the full size portions. The smaller portions seem to run less (obviously), and don't blast me with that saltiness. I'm hoping this is a taste I will aquire, since I much prefer snus to smokes already (3 days smoke free ).

Well thanks for letting a newbie share!

Finally - are dates written differently in the US vs. the EU?

    05 09 2007 = May 9th 2007 in the US
    05 09 2007 = 5th September 2007 in the EU ?

Just making one of my tins isn't expired!

You little girl! Don't worry, stick with mini if you like it. As you get used to snus you will probably wish to move on to something else.

Yeah this is correct. I see you preferred the black portions over the white. Maybe you should try a large block portion sometime?

      Thanks for sharing

Don't worry about the girlie-snus ... in the beginning they made me feel so much more comfortable with this whole thing. But I don't think I used more than 3 or 4 tins of minis before deciding to go all the way and use both original and white portions (and loose at home). Today I don't care for the mini variants at all. They are simply too small for me - and waaay to expensive considering the amount of snus you get.

When you think about it they are a total rip-off. 20 x 0.5 gram portions is 10 grams of snus, whilst in a loose tin you get 50 grams for a similar price!

Bingo, phish. I'm going to try the Skruf Stark portions for work but that'll be my only portion use.

Alex, getting comfortable and enjoying what you like is the main thing. There is no "Nancy Girl" brand snus.... yet....

Yeah, the US is almost unique with its date conventions - I'm not sure why.

            time < day < month < year

seems to be the most logical way, but I guess it's because americans prefer to say "October fifth" rather than "The fifth of October" that day and month got swapped around. Who knows...

Normal portion aren't too bad you get 24 1 gram portions which seems an exceptable compromise for their convenience

Thanks for all of the replies guys. I wasn't really that serious about the whole girlie thing - my girlfriend thought it was cute that the one I enjoyed was the small white and purple skruf tin

phish - I actually also ordered 1 can of General Onyx portions and 2 cans of knox (regular and mini portions), so that will give me more experience with the regular vs. white portion snus'.

and Zero - thanks for the date clarification. I was pretty sure the the US and EU wrote their dates differently, but better safe than sorry.

I had read that the Lucky Strike snus is a little more of just a straight tobacco flavor that is not as salty... is this true, and if so, what other brands close in on that criteria?

Hi Alex, perhaps you're referring to this thread?

The thing you have to realize is that snus has traditionally been made with salt as a main ingredient. Maybe for taste* or maybe for chemistry.

                  * "Sweets", like candy, in (northern) Europe have traditionally been from somewhat to extremely salty. The term "sweet" is thus a misnomer. In Holland and it's colonies of yore you'll still find a broad assortment of purely salty candy, sold in any old straight candy store.

Interesting, well than maybe my sugar blasted taste buds will get used to the saltiness of some of the portions. I still enjoy snus 1000 fold over smoking

Yesterday I received my Onyx portions and my regular and mini knox portions. I must say Onyx is probably the best I have tried so far! I also feel that the knox is a portion I could do day-in day-out, it's not too powerfull and has a pretty straight forward tobacco taste.

sidenote : I'm trying out the diplomat again right now, and things are going much better than last time
