IT is NOT ammonia!! It is E500, which is an acidity regulator, which means the PH is raised so that the tobacco has a stronger base. Ammonia has a high ph, thus the similarity in smell.
Nope it is ammonia, it is a byproduct of the production of Snuss and Snuff, it does pass quite quickly though. If you go order some Toque Nasal Snuff or other snuff that comes to you very soon after production and have a whiff of that as soon as it lands you will get an overwhelming smell of ammonia, but as has been said ammonia smell = fresh = good
In fact i have actually got to the point where i enjoy the smell of ammonia in my snuff lol I never seem to smell it as strong in snus though.
The limited ammonia smell in snus is nothing compared to fresh snuff. The only snus I have had that had an overpowering ammonia smell was Phantom Brown lös. Snuff on the other hand...every tin of Toque snuff I've had needed a bit of time to air out. Sometimes I think Roderick has cats in his factory.

I have a can of Triumph snus that smells strongly of ammonia. It tastes the same though. I can't remember if my previous cans smelled the same or not....
