Question for those who like General snus

Has anyone noticed that general snus has a weird smell to it? Especially when it gets warm? last time i got it i thought i got a bad batch, but this time it has the same kind of smell. Its kind of a gross smell, maybe a tad fishy or something. I really hate the smell of this stuff.

It's a combination of the "ammonia" smell and salt. Ammonia indicates freshness apparently.

I've only tried the Onyx and Original los varieties. The only odor i've detected is a slight ammonia smell, which i understand is normal. Of course everybody's sense of smell is different so what smells like tobacco and ammonia to me might smell fishy to you. Does it still taste ok?

General snus has a pretty high pH compared to other brands. This means that the nicotine is more easily absorbed by your gums. The downside to this is the odor. After a while, you will appreciate it, since it indicates freshness and a nice hit of nicotine.

Which variety are you using? Portions, los, ekstra sterk? The stronger varieties will have a more pronounced odor and flavor of bitterness, due to the higher level of nicotine. As well, any kind of portion will smell worse, since the pH is manipulated to compensate for the pouch material that slows down the absorption of nicotine.

Personally, my favorite snus odor-wise is Ettan Los. It smells like a combination of chocolate, Oriental tobacco, and coffee.

          Mmmmm... Warm snus...

Yes, I've noticed it. And it is a bit fishy at times. It was my first snus, and I thought it revolting. Now it's my favorite. Go figure.

That's why I keep mine in the fridge - I work from home. If I do go out the snus isn't exposed to even 24 hours before I finish it.

Wow, that is the same thing that happened to me. I got a free can from Getsnus and when I tried it, I really was almost put off by it. Now it is my go to snus!

Yeah, I'm back on General los after a long hiatus where I was just using portions. The los does have an odd scent sometimes, but it's so tasty!

Yep like everyone else said, high PH means less acidic, so it smells like a strong base (such as ammonia). It's not ammonia though! So don't worry!

The taste is fantastic, but the smell at first is a major turn off. I've grown to really like that smell now.

I don't think so. I haven't heard of any issues, and I've been using ammonia "infused" snuff and snus for awhile.

IT is NOT ammonia!! It is E500, which is an acidity regulator, which means the PH is raised so that the tobacco has a stronger base. Ammonia has a high ph, thus the similarity in smell.

It could be ammonia. Ammonia is naturally produced during the production process, though it'll air out after a short time.
