    Hello (and a question)

Brand new snuser here and a very thankful convert. I didn't switch to stop smoking like so many but to stop dipping. I dipped Copenhagen for 20 some years, then switched to Husky natural when Copenhagen prices became comical.

Anyway, it ripped up my lip and gums pretty bad. At the end of every day my mouth was sore and my gums bleeding, or nearly so.

Not so with snus. A little rough patch that goes away in a few hours is all I get and I've only used loose. By the way, since I've been using snus (for about a month now) only in my upper lip as per tradition, my lower lip and gums are completely healed, thank God. I really see how American dip can give you mouth cancer.

Anyway, I'm a traditionalist and like traditional tobacco flavor, what loose brands fit into this? So far I have tried Nick and Johnny and Skruf stark. I like them both, but have ordered a log of Skruf.

A nice list of traditional-style, primarily tobacco-flavored looose snus would be most appreciated from you folks with snus experience. Keep in mind I'm not looking for a Copenhagen replacement, just something equally as satisfying and have already found it with both N&J and Skruf stark...

    Thanks again and happy snusing!

    Hi there!

If you're looking for traditional snus with the pure taste of tobacco, you should probably try Ettan (keeping it real since 1822). Grovsnus also. They're both good and solid brands. Of course neither of them are as powerful as N & J or Skruf Stark when it comes to nicotine, but they should still do the trick.

Skruf and N&J are probably the best of the Strong Snus breed - most of the rest would seem like "light tobacco" by comparison and by comparison with Cope, etc. Still, if you're interested in trying other snus I would suggest :

      - Grov Snus
      - Gellivare (from Northerner.com)
      - Ettan

for starters. You might like many of the "flavoured" snus types as well - they're not like saturated, overflavoured dip. The flavours are very subtle so the taste of tobacco is generally the main component with just a light hint of something on top. General is the most popular in sweden and has a light hint of citrus which is quite nice. I would try that as your first flavoured snus just to see what you think of it, then go from there if you like it.

 ... btw, I totally agree with Zero's little flavor-speech. You should try the General too.

            Thanks guys...and keep them coming!

I do read around here that snus is a subtle experience. If flavored snus is subtly flavored, that's a different animal all together. I just recall the time a year or so ago running out of Copenhagen and bumming a flavored Skoal dip from a buddy (I don't recall the flavor, nor care to). Man, it was about as nasty a thing as I can remember!

A hint of citrus or a fruit sounds kind of nice actually. I'm pretty excited about trying all these different kinds.

So long as it doesn't punch me in the gut like flavored American dip does, I'm pretty open to just about anything that isn't mint or mint-like. I despise anything mint-related and wouldn't be able to stand even a subtle hint of it.

              No problem.

When speaking of 'flavored' snus it makes more sense to think of it as an aroma instead. As stated above it's more like a hint of something else than tobacco - the idea is not to hide the tobacco flavor but rather to compliment it with a completely different note. There are exceptions though; certain brands are rather heavily flavored ... I personally find Offroad and Mocca to be that. But thats just my Scandinavian taste buds. Maybe yours would scream with happiness

Anyway, to me it seems that many snus users (at least the majority in here) never really stick with just one brand of snus. It's also appears to be common to have different kinds of snus to different kinds of situations (morning, work, transport, coming home from work, after-dinner, coffee, party, sleeping etc.). Some brands of snus is even (by some) considered to belong in a certain season (Göteborgs Rapé #2 has been called a good summertime snus), and with the Gotland Julesnus we see a snus that is only available during xmas time.
Surely some will stick with just one favorite, but considered how many good experiences there is to be found among the different brands, chances are you'll never really stop looking

Snus is NOTHING like the american flavored "dip". I still don't go for any mint or wintergreen flavored snus but General has a nice, lemony aftertaste that is very subtle and refreshing.

American dip is chemically altered with no real flavors - that's to say that the flavorings taste like chemical flavorings. I don't see how people dip Skoal or those other chemically flavored things.

I'm a newb who has gotten off Cope with snus and it's one of the best moves I've made. In the mail somewhere between here and Sweden is Ettan Loose, Nick and Johnny Loose, Skruf Stark portions (for work) and an odd tin of Diplomat, Gotlandsnuss and Roda Lacket.

After reading the posts by the folks here who are old hands at this, I believe I'm going to like most all of what I ordered. I'm especially looking forward to the Ettan and Nick and Johnny.

                Good luck and keep posting!

                  Many thanks for the ideas....

I now have on order a can of Ettan, one of Grovsnus, one of General, one of Gellivare, and another of N&J, in addition to my log of Skruff Stark, which arrived just today.

I have now opened up my mind and will try probably all varieties, or nearly so.

                  Yummy
