    FDA Regulation/Menthol A-OK!

haha, i thought this was funny.

The new ban on candy- and fruit-flavored cigarettes isn't expected to have a big financial impact. Menthol cigarettes are initially exempt from the ban because of demands from the Congressional Black Caucus. About 75% of African-American smokers buy menthol brands.

I can not remember where I read this and if there is even any truth to it, but I once read that menthol cigarettes were MORE addictive than non-menthol. If this is the case, seems like it would make more sense to ban menthol! Ugh...all I know is that I gotta stock up on my Cherry and Vanilla Sweet Dreams cigs. Hope all of the children smokers haven't bought my store out of them! <-sarcasm.

it would make sense that they are, but i believe they're more dangerous because of the fiberglass that is in them.

The urban legend about the fiberglass in tobacco products I always heard was Copenhagen. I've never heard it about menthol cigarettes before. Either way, there's no truth to it. It's just one of those things that's been told and retold.

Menthols are worse because the smoke goes down easier, and you can inhale deeper. I've heard of menthol smokers coughing up blood. I assume the menthol breaks capillaries in the lungs easier, but that's just my speculation.

The only fiberglass in a cigarette is the filter, perhaps particles could break away as you're inhaling, but that would be with every cigarette, not just menthol. Menthol is a compound which causes a cooling sensation without changing the temperature, probably not the best thing to be inhaling lol

Filters are made from acetate. You can buy cotton filters for home made, but they're expensive, and I don't see the point.

Menthol is an analgesic, which numbs the bronchial tubes as you inhale. All this achieves is numbed throat and airways. I could see how this could possibly allow you to smoke more or possibly attempt to inhale deeper (compared to a non-menthol cigarette), but I haven't seen any conclusive evidence to prove this either way. The filter is probably the worst thing about most cigarettes. You DO have to inhale deeper with a filter on your cigarette than you do with a non-filter, and this leads to tar buildup in tiny, critical recesses of the lung that normally wouldn't be affected by tar from a non-filtered smoke.

Menthol in and of itself is NOT dangerous nor do mentholated smokes contain fiberglass.

I always figured the only reason menthol cigarettes even existed was to get people that didn't like the taste of tobacco addicted to nicotine. Now I don't have one single reference for this opinion, but it makes complete sense in my head.
For this reason alone it should be considered a 'candy flavoring' and banned by the current bill.

Actually from what I read years back, the fellow that created the first mentholated cigarette ("Spuds" IIRC) noted how smooth his Camel tasted right after he swallowed a mentholated cough drop. Hence, mentholated cigarettes.

I don't know if menthol cigarettes are more addicting, but I was a menthol smoker, and now I tend to use snus that has a minty taste to it. I'm pretty stuck on General Wintergreen now, I just ordered some more, and ordered a can of Offroad Icemint to give it a try. The only can I have until my order comes is the Grovsnus that Getsnus threw in as the mystery can on my last order, and while its pretty good, I'm craving the wintergreen flavor now...

As far as this new legislation, I'm getting really tired of the this liberal nanny-state crap telling me what is good and bad for me....these damn liberals use the "don't tell women what to do with their "bodies"" crap when it comes to abortion, yet they want to tell me what to do with my body when it comes to tobacco. I'm tired of Obama's "hope" and "change" already....and I'm tired of Nancy Pelosi and the rest of the liberal slime in congress.
