It's official- the law just passed.

To no one's surprise, Obama just signed the FDA bill into law. I'm really hoping for the best but I feel like some of my freedom just died.

The positives: I want to know what's in my tobacco here in the US.

The negatives: I want to be able to enjoy brands like Roda Lacket and Gotlandssnus Green which have a sweet (now illegal) flavoring.

Is this why Camel Snus is suddenly buy one get fifteen free everywhere?

Glad I didn't see it actually being signed...I'd have probably thrown something at the TV...

The new law bans candy and fruit flavors in tobacco products, and it limits advertising that could attract young people.
That would mean no more Skoal flavors, Camel snus, flavored cigars, etc. Theoretically any snus that would possibly be sold here that fit the bill, including Roda Lacket, would be banned.

yikes, that doesn't sound good. so would the ban concern possession of these sweet flavored tobacco products or will it simply prevent the industry from selling them in the US? because if it's the latter then us importers should have nothing to worry about right?

Well, it would be illegal to manufacture. As for importing, there's no clear rule as to what will happen there so anything at this point is just speculation.

And they consider cloves to be too sweet?

How the heck did Djarum not get into this fight?

For myself, I'm trying to be open-minded about it. We'll see what happens....

Wow, according to this article he was (is?) only a five a day smoker anyway.
Geez, who cares, give the man a break - five is nothing, hardly even worth calling it an addiction (which interestingly I notice that they didn't at all in this article - for the rest of us it's an addiction, for the President it's a "habit")

man 'o man, i don't want to even think about this stuff. snus has enabled me to break a 38 year old chain smoking habit. that is equivalent to squatting and then jumping up to the peak of mount everest. i'm gonna get me a sig... *shuffles away mumbling and kicking the dirt*

                      Kennedy/Waxman and snus

A friend at Swedish Match said to me that current snus products will be unaffected by the new law. It's really all about cigarettes. As for "new tobacco products," snus does not fit that profile.

It will primarily affect cigarette products such as Camel's and Kool's flavored lines.

This is the biggest "**** You" to smokers I've ever seen.

FWIW, the bill doesn't "ban" anything. It simply gives the FDA the "right" to. Until they start using the bill, no way to really tell if this will effect us at all. The PACT act is a much bigger issue, potentially, for us.

Yes Watson, change is coming. What gets me is why did he not look atthe facts of swedish snus? If the product is passed by thier FDA then why. I give up. I just know I will not vote for these morons. What stupidity. They say quit smoking. Then they take away something that works. Idiots

ORIGINALLY that was the case, which is why Swedish Match was all for it and publicly backed the resolution. When those sneaky lawmakers threw in that additional supplement that gave the FDA the right to apply those same cigarette regulations to ALL tobacco, snus included, Swedish Match did an about-face and vowed to fight the measure as best it could.

Never try to deal with the government, they're even sneakier than those darn tobacco monopolies...

                              That's very interesting.
I wonder if the mint-like flavors, e.g., frost, wintergreen, qualify as "menthol" since that is the one flavor permitted by the bill (other than tobacco obviously).
