Camel "SNUS" is manufactured by RJ Reynolds here in America.

Swedish Camel Snus is manufactured by JTI, in Sweden.

(JTI owns the rights to the Camel name outside of the US)

I know originally b.a.t was under contract to manufacter camel snus for reynolds u.s.a. If reynolds decided to open a plant here in the u.s and manufacter the snus the exact same way, I would still call it swedish snus.

I don't think it matters where the plant is, it is the manufacturing process itself. Correct?

Would you consider Pizza Hut Italian Pizza?
Would you consider Chef Boyardee Spaghetti Italian?

RJR's Camel isn't Swedish anymore but is still snus.

          Great post chadizzy1.

I dig Triumph. It's a nice, although sweet, snus. I use mint and the original. I stocked up when they first came out in Georgia and I am actually all out of the mint kind. I need to make another trip

I have tried every domestic snus I have heard of except tourney and I have to agree with you. None of the domestics hold a candle to Triumph. Now if they could just get a larger distribution system I bet I could even live off those instead of shipping stuff in.

On second though, nah... I need my Goteborgs #2

i think it's all about taste. until i knew about swedish snus, camel "snus" was snus to me. but after i've tried all these different varieties of swedish snus, i just can't even look at camel "snus" the same way. do a test sometime, if you have free time. get a good, moist and fresh general portion, and a camel "snus" frost/mellow portion. cut them open and look. and then do a taste test on them.

camel "snus" is a snus only in the fact that it's smokeless/spitless tobacco in a pouch. but in my eyes, that's as far as it goes for me.

just my opinion though, on that part.

I have tried both camel frost and camel mellow. They are currently sitting in my mini fridge untouched after 1 try of each. I recently had no snus on hand, and instead took the trip down to center city here in Philadelphia to pick up some General from a cigar store, because quite frankly I find the camel snus horrible. I'd rather have no snus than that stuff. It is sickly sweet, the flavor is way overbearing and it's not something I'd want sitting in my mouth for a long time.

I like the saltiness of swedish snus. Maybe that comes from my love of sunflower seeds, which I tend to have in my mouth whenever I don't have snus

Justintemper I think your logic is a little off. If you bought a bmw manufactured here in the u.s, is it no longer a bmw? If you could literally pick up the swedish match manufacturing plant and drop it somewhere in the u.s, would the snus still be swedish snus? No, perhaps not by your definition, but it would still feel and taste exactly the same.

                  That's kind of the point:

Camel Snus does NOT feel and taste exactly the same as Swedish Snus.

justintempler i understand what you are saying. Camel snus does not taste like traditional swedish snus. I personally prefer General or gotesborg rape myself.

My basic point was, for a start up american snus camel is pritty good. Yes, I wish they had a traditional swedish flavor to offer. Yes, I wish you could choose between a mini and large portion. I think if this snus thing catches on here in the u.s the above mentioned things may happen.

To recap, camel snus(u.s) has a good shaped portion and the flavor does seem to stick around. I generally use Swedish Match and B.A.T snus, but i will occasionally mix it up with some camel.

                      A snuss shop

I don't understand it either. Why not a snuss shop? For camel snus a lot of retailers had to put in a freezer. A few shops in the US I think carry General. Even if you paid four bucks a can I would still buy it. I used to do Copenhagen. Then one day I bought a can on the tenth. The made by date said the tenth. My trust factor went south. If a cigar retailer will put in a humidor why not a freezer? Strange, if the bill goes thru and you cannot buy snuss from overseas who would benifit? I guess the american snuff guys. When cig prices went up again the price of snuff went down a buck. Curious. I got a great idea makers. If you make a better purer product like the swedes do maybe the sales will go up. If all tobacco goes under the FDA (God forbid) They will have to list ingrediants. I bet you get a little book with every pack and can. Ha!

Camel snus isn't really even snus. Probably just cigarette tobacco with a pound of sugar and flavor added. Not to mention there is like no buzz at all from it.

Skoal snus seems to be gone around here now. Hopefully Camel Snus dies soon.

yeah skoal snus is discontinued i think. if you go to their former website it's been taken down, and the sheetz stores i've talked to have said they stopped getting it in shipments.

Sigh. I'm not ashamed to say I liked Skoal Dry Cinnamon. It was just a dessert snus, but it had a place along with Ettan and Lucky Strike in my daily ritual.

My complaint with Camel is not the super-sweet taste, but the price per portion. What a colossal ripoff.

And the newly passed bill giving FDA authority over tobacco dooms Camel Snus and Orbs, Sticks, Strips, to an early death, since they were not on the market as of Feb. 7, 2007, and thus are "new products" needing scientific proof of safety and efficacy, etc., under the new law.

That's the revenge of Philip Morris on RJR.

Whatever happened to Toboka, the PM snus product introduced in 2006? I tried it back then. And where did the even-weaker-than-Camel Marlboro snus go? We might see Toboka back on the market, courtesy of the new FDA bill.

Has there been any American attempt at a loose snus? If so, what, and how was it?
