Swedish Match owns Red Man. It's made by Pinkerton.

I had a recent brief correspondence with a PR person from Red Man. I asked why Red Man, being an arm of SM, didn't bring out an RM branded snus. The reply, from someone named Lisa, was that SM was expanding it's B&M presence as fast as it could and didn't need the distraction. Odd that. Red Man must have a long and well established distribution setup so adding snus should be a no-brainer. Although additional reasons were not given I suspect there are at least three more. First snus requires refrigeration, second SM is more interested in cultivating the upscale market, and third Red Man might only be stealing sales from themselves with such a product. Pity. An RM branded snus would have virtual instant entree' into tens of thousands of convenience stores across the country. However an ad campaign touting the benefits of snus over other smokeless would be tricky for a chew/dip manufacturer.

I went out and bought a tin of Camel Mellow SNUS a couple of hours ago since I'm out of portions due to Northerner not being able to get their shit straight. Is it just me or have they improved on this stuff and not told anyone? The portions are longer than I remember, it's less sweet than I remember it being, it's giving me my fix (in fact the first portion I had out of this tin gave me a nic high if you can believe that), and all in all this is starting to become some pretty damn good shit in my opinion. Right on, RJR. Good job.

It would have to be a big improvement over what's been in the stores until now. Bears further investigation I suppose.

As long as the Swedish snus companies keep their exotic imported item, an exclusive nitch product, then it will remain as such.

People like dip, people like chew, people like snus, some use one exclusively, some mix it up, some smoke cigs, some smoke cigars. I do not believe if SMNA introduced an "American" snus(a real snus) for the local dip racks, it would not harm their dip product sales, like it does not hurt their cigar sales in exclusive cigar shops.

They really need to make a quality Swedish taste snus, with a foil topped inner seal, under the RED MAN name, and get it on the dip racks. People WILL buy this!

I really don't believe I am wrong. But, if snus remains(real snus that is) an obscure item, it's popularity in the US will wane, especially with stuff like PACT going on.

              They should hire me.

I was reading Chad's blog, and he had a new ad for Camel.
Anyone seen these new Camel tins, and flavors locally?

I'm still curious to try the Robust flavor, and I kinda like the new tin designs.

                    Wow. Never seen those.
the camel site still has the old looking cans on it. Wonder when the face lift is going to happen.

Camel moves very slow on releases. It is one of the reasons I went straight to Swedish snus. Could not wait another 3 months for them to arrive so I ordered from Sweden.

I wonder if the robust will just be a more heavily sweetened mellow.

I'm gonna have to buy some more Camel just so I can get those new snazzy tins :^D

                        Edit:
Btw, nice article Chad. You should forward that to RJR :^)

Damn! I'm sure the snus will still suck, but I HAVE to have those tins! Thats THE only reason I've ever bought Camel "SNUS", they do have some bad ass tins!

I tried Camel's snus at least 5 times and always came to the conclusion that the shit is utter shit. The smell alone is repulsive and irritating. And the flavor is not that great either. Ones the packet starts soaking through with the saliva you get a mouthful of strong disgusting flavor, can't really see how that can be "spit-free" since that taste alone irritated the hell out of my throat and stomach. The only other one I gave a try is the Marlbolo ones. The flavor is definitely an improvement with those, almost sweet tasting, but seemed to have lacked the "nicotine kick" as the one from Camel. So depending on a specific take you either could feel the nicotine and on other times just the flavor, pretty meh as well. Since that pretty much covered all the snus that currently USA available, at least around here, I opted to go with a tin of Grizzly Wintergreen dip a while ago...And damn was that an improvement in terms of both in taste and kick, and I assuming this the sort of flavor you swedish snus users brag about, since this was very much flavorful, could really distinguish the fact that it was wintergreen, the kick was nice, was not disgusting. Coming from Camel's Snus I realized that a "mint type" flavor actually does not have to taste like someone dipped the tobacco in ammonia. Seriously, do the people behind Camel even know what wintergreen even suppose to smell like, haha.

                            Conclusion, USA snus is shit.

I was introduced to snus by the Camel "snus" and I might be the only one here, but I actually enjoyed the taste of the frosted, maybe its the sweet tooth in me, but I liked it. After trying real snus, that may be different. What I didn't like in them was the feeling of putting a wad of sandpaper in my mouth, and the absolute minimum amount of nicotine in them. I will revisit them with this new design.. Doubt they will be anything compared to the real Swedish snus but I'll give it a go.
