What is the expiration date on the snus? I would assume that date is for refrigerated, and you would have at least two weeks opened unrefrigerated before it went sour.

Sometimes I stick my snus back in the fridge at the end of the day... sometimes I don't. It takes me about a week to kill a can of knox since I will mix in some loose or other brands here and there.

My last roll of Knox I ordered came last week has an expiration date of January 20th 2008. You did mention you have been having problems with long shipping, so the snus could have been through severe climate changes before reaching you.

The tin of Rape I have with me expires 14-11-07, I guess Nov 14. I keep it unrefrigerated during day and put in fridg at night. It seems to be losing moisture. Is there a good way to rehydrate the snus?

I've had many cans open at room temperature for about 3 weeks. It absolutely is no problem.
But, once your snus starts to get dry, the taste can be gone within a few hours. Exspecially a half empty can gets dry very soon. So, what I do, is to always keep my snus in a plastic bag, no matter if the can is opened or unopend or if it is in the fridge or not. I'd recommend to everyone, to do so. BTW, I too, got this tip from other snusers and it works.

Edit: I've never tried to rehydrate my snus, because I always thought, it gets rehydrated in my mouth, but I only found, that, when it's dry, then the taste is gone for good. Well, since I began strictly using plastic bags, the problem simply disappeared. BTW, even dry snus is still usable, just not as tasty, as moist snus.

        Cheers!

I like it a little dry as it packs better in the icetool. We used to put a slice of cucumber in a pouch of tobacco if it was too dry, I suppose you could try that  Or maybe a couple of drops of water from a pipette.

I go through a tin of loose and a tin of portions every 10-14 days; at the end it is dry but it makes the next fresh tin you open even better!

I'm not nearly as religious about cold storing as I was in the beginning (it actually reached a point where I'd be suspicious about a can, if it had been in my pocket longer than an afternoon :roll. Today I keep cans 'out' the entire time - both portions and loose - and I have yet to experience snus turning really bad. But as chainsnuser also says ... it gets dry + the tastes fade some.

With that said - some snus even gets better when 'matured' this way. I find Knox portions to be best after a couple of days - while the General is perfect after a few hours. Well, thats just my observations.

All the cans have a stated "maximum temperature" usually right next to the "best by" date.
I think they're usually 7°C or 8°C. Remember it's a "best by" not "use by". Snus doesn't suddenly become poisonous after that date. ;-)
Ofcourse the colder it's kept, the better.
I've had a roll traded that spent over 2 months on the road and in customs, from Sweden to USA (2 different cities/SnusOn members) to Holland. Tasted just fine thank you very much!

Personally I think the cardboard cans can be kept fresh* at room temps for about 7 or 8 days and plastic and metal cans for about 4 days more.

              *meaning: not dried out
