just found out about snus yesterday

hello. I live in maryland, US. I started dippin in the army when they stationed me in ALASKA(directly in the center of the state) and i was bored. I didnt want to be one of my buddies who was freezing outside smoking a cigarette in -40 (yes ive seen it that cold) so i decided to give dip a try. The first kind i tried was Copehagen snuff. I never smoked before, and I have never tried tobacco in my life. I know trying cope snuff is like is like restoring a car when you have know nothing about them. Within about 5 minutes i was on the floor and for some reason the room was spinning. But to my credit i never got sick. I decided that i couldnt hang with the big dogs so i moved down to Grizzly and every now and then i would try cope and other kinds. I hated the flavored kinds of Skoal. I like the taste of dip and i didnt want it to taste like candy. Wintergreen isnt too bad though. So after the army i brought my new habit home. I stuck with Grizzly wintergreen until 2 days ago. I was in the local gas station and they had a advertisment up for snus. I had never heard of it before, and it said it was spitless. Well that would be nice instead of having to carry a bottle around with me everywhere. The only brand they had was Camel Frost and Mellow, so i went with the mellow. I can usually go about 3 hours after i wake up before i start to have that craving. It had been four hours since i woke up and i was out of Grizzly. When i first put the pouch in i was a little nervous about swallowing. I had done that before accidentaly and it had bad results (profuse sweating, green complextion, etc). I could def. tell that there was nicotiene being released, but it didnt give me that nicotiene high that i look for. I found that my craving was gone. I left the pouch in for about an hour before i found that i still had it in. I couldnt believe it. I had curved my craving enough to wear i didnt need a lip full of the potent stuff. I was and still am amazed. For about 4 hours now ive been doing research online and I find that there are dozens of different types of snus. I think that it is relativaly new to my area because no one i know has ever heard of it before (and we are some country people too, we would know). So i guess the point of me writing this is to ask if snus is going to be availible from different brands? I mean is camel gonna be the only company in america to sell this stuff? I know that my local store is beginning to sell out of the stuff because alot of my freinds are tired of having to dang near go across the county just to have a cigarette. I dont want their to be a shortage of it because i really really like it. Any advice on the market for this and different types to try would be welcome.

American snus is just bursting onto the scene in the U.S. It's been around for over a year, but Camel is now advertising the hell out of it (which, incidentally, is how people like you and me found out about snus). Discreet is an American-made snus and it's supposedly making its way into gas stations and convenience stores. I don't know of any other American brands in the pipeline.

My advice to you would be to read through this site thoroughly. Like you, a lot of us were excited about Camel, which prompted us to look this amazing shit up on the internet. You're going to find a lot of great links on this site to websites like snuscentral.com, getsnus.com and northerner.com where you can buy Swedish snus, and I highly recommend you give it a try.

      Hi and welcome.
Camel has become the most available American snus, pronounced mostly like snoose. But "real" snus, from Sweden is different, not sweet, generally speaking, and IMO, way way better. Look at getsnus.com or other sites, and you can see a wide variety. Another American brand you might find near you, is at Speedway and Super America is Tourney Snus, it's not as near good as the better Swedish brands, but is better than Camel, IMO. My recommendation is make a small order from getsnus, like 5 cans, and you get a free can too. Just try some portions. I'm not into flavored or sweet kinds, so my faves are:

      Ettan white portion
      Grov white portion

There is also General Wintergreen, which you might like.
Regular General Portion is good too.

Snus also comes in a loose type, that can be hand molded and placed in the upper lip, this is nice too, IMO.

So, I'd make a small 5 can order, and pick what you think you might like. I'd get some white and regular portion, make sure to have some non flavored, and if interested get some loose.

Welcome to the boards schmidt2169. Like yourself I found snus through Camel Frost. I was a two pack a day smoker, but now I might smoke 1 or two when I'm drinking. You have to try the real stuff. It is a whole different experience. I recommend Getsnus and General's website. They will both send you free samples. Then order some of the samplers from Getsnus or Northerner. Once you get past the salt, it will blow you away.

wow, i cant believe all the different types of snus. I think ill stick to the pouches though. Im def gonna order some. Thank yall so much for the info. One more questions. What is the difference between the white and black? There isnt a discription of the taste or anything like that.

Regular - the pouch has been sprayed with the flavoring. It's juicer.
White - the pouch is drier (not as dry and rough as Camel) the flavor tends to last longer for some reason.
Black - the same as white only they colored the pouch black. (Marketing gimmick)

well i went to the website, but guess what? For whatever reason they cant verify my age. I called them and i have to fax them or email them a picture of my id. If the sweddish kind is better than the stuff i have right now, then it is well worth the aggrivation! By the way im ordering General White White Portion. Is that a good kind? I just want the everyday stuff. Like Cope long cut or Grizzly Straight.

                schmidt2169-

I was in the same boat as you not more then 4 months ago! I'm now down to virtually no smoking and loving every minute of it. I've found a few local tobacco stores carrying limited selection of both General brand and Discreet but many seemed to be substantially higher priced the the already mentioned online sites(of which I've ordered from all at this point) Just from experience, i'm guessing you have a lot of the same questions I did. You already got the White, Black, Portion question out of the way. I did get some los initially but after the first try decided I would use portions while i decided what flavors worked for me.
I also started pretty hard on all the Strong...aka sterk/stark. I was givin up pack + a day of Camel Wides so figured I would stack the odds in my favor.
I've now sampled a good 8 different snus's and discovered as many have that the camel bags just don't come close to the real stuff. I had a camel can still lying about and popped one in the other night....ack!
Snuson has been a godsend and I can't rave enough about the folks here. Like you, I spent many hours researching and can honestly say that this forum by far has provided the best education and foundation for the world of snus for me.

Any help I can provide from recently going thru the same path...tho many are closer to guru status here....feel free to hit me up.

i finally got to order some. Grovsnus Black White Portion is what i got. I guess ill give it a try. if i dont like it ill just order a different kind. I figure it will take me a while to find one that i like. Just like with regular dip. I went through about 10 different kinds before i discovered what i like. Thank all of you for your help. I def will be an active member on this website.

Welcome aboard! As a new person myself, I'd like to emphasize two things:

First, try many different kinds. If you don't like one, come back to it after a few days. Your tastes are all over the map in the beginning.

Second, the salt. I hate salt. Most Swedish snus has at least some salt taste. You get used to it. I promise.

Welcome to the forum schmidt. Glad to have you. I too came to snus by way of dipping and have never looked back. I think you will find this forum both very informative and a whole lot of fun. There are a lot of great folks here who are very knowledgeable.

Also, a while back I posted a thread especially for dippers. It's called "A dipper's Guide to Snus". Rather than repeat it all here, I'll just provide the link. You can check it out if you would like.
