First snus - Better than I expected

    Howdy!

I've been thinking about trying snus for a while now, as a way to get off cigarettes. I've been smoking for 24 years, with a break of a few years in the middle.

I knew without even having to try them that the U.S. Camel snus would be horrid, so I never did. I thought about ordering some real snus online, but had no idea what to try first, so I started reading here. I saw that General was actually being sold in a few places in the U.S., so I checked and happily, the Tinderbox here had some. I picked up a can of the white for $5.27 with tax.

(In case anyone is curious, they had two cans of white portions, one can of original and four cans of los left, nothing else and the owner said he was getting more in this week.)

I was thinking I probably wouldn't like it much. But I was worried for nothing. This stuff is pretty good!

I thought it would be a lot saltier based on what I read. The salt taste is fine, I like it. But then, I always have liked saltier foods and hardly ever eat sweets.

I thought I would look like a dork with a big lump under my lip, but it's barely noticeable, and I don't think anyone else would even notice.

I was afraid there might be too much juice to swallow comfortably, but it seemed just right, just enough to keep the flavor going.

The nicotine was what I was most concerned about. Having tried to quit smoking with nicotine gum, I knew what a failure that was. But this has plenty of nicotine, maybe even a little too much. I felt it pretty good and a lot quicker than I expected, too. So I think if I can get over the other dumb habits I've associated with cigarettes, this will easily keep the cravings away. I hope so.

It was a bit too peppery for me, though, and it left that peppery taste/feeling in the back of my throat that I found annoying with nicotine gum. I'll probably have to find a less peppery kind.

Anyway, this may help some lurker out there with a decision. I know reading posts like this helped me.

      Welcome to Snuson OttR!!

General's a good start into real snus. It's not my favorite, but it is for much of the world. There's a ton of other snus out there to explore, and it's a fun ride; enjoy it :^)

        Welcome to Snuson OttR.

Glad you are liking it from the start. I did too when I first tried t (in the day before camel) But as much as you are liking it already, standard new person advice still applies. Your tastes will shift significantly. What you are tasting today is not how t will taste in a few weeks. So just be open minded, get some different snus from one of the online places, and don't stress the quitting the smokes part. Just let that happen naturally.

        And again, welcome.

that's right, i used to love flavored minis. now i can't stand them, i have to use 2 or 3 at once to get the nic hit i need. your flavor interest/nic level/portion size/type will change. there's so many kinds of snus out there, and the good thing is they are cheap. you can try many many many kinds in one order, and gradually get a feel for what you like and develop a style and interest that is uniquely yours.

The psychological part is a lot harder than the nicotine part in my experience of trying to quit. Going the harm-reduction route is easier because at least you feel like you're doing something with a snus under your lip.

OttR welcome to the forum and that's a great post.

I second what sage said. Try a variety.

Also don't throw anything away. If you don't like something put it in the freeze and revisit it in a month or two. Your taste will change. But most of all have fun with it!!! It's a blast
When it's my time to go, I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my uncle did....... Not screaming in terror like his passengers

                Welcome OttR!

Not much farther down the path then you but can't say enuff bout how snus has helped. Just finishing day 5 without a smoke after nearly 25 years. As mentioned, the mental and daily habit part has been the hardest for me. After meals, driving etc. The variety of snus and of course the community here has made a world of difference to me.

                  Welcome to the forum, OttR!

The nicotine was also my main concern before I switched from cigarettes to snus. The health aspects and the pleasing taste of most snus-brands are a nice bonus for me but not more.

At first you will have to struggle a bit to get a taste for snus. It takes one week to get acclimatised in general and several months to be able to tolerate even brands that do not agree with your personal taste.

General is by far is the most popular brand in Sweden and it has some kind of "everyday snus that never gets boring"-quality, but it's definitely not for everyone. I recommend Ettan Lös (for a pure tobacco-taste and longlasting nicotine-delivery), Skruf Stark Portion (for the nicotine-kick) and Gotland Grön (with a rather salty elderberry taste and, of course, also a pleasing kind of nicotine-impact).

I've been hesitating as well before I placed my first order, so I think it's indeed the best advice for everyone who has doubts, to just try snus as soon as possible. It's simply the best way to get off the cigarettes, like Sweden with it's rapidly shrinking number of smokers shows.

It takes some dedication at first to avoid the cigarettes, but it's no failure to just smoke a cigarette once in a while. The chances that you sooner or later will find out that you don't like the cigarettes anymore, which really helps to kick them for good, are far higher than that a single cigarette will get you hooked again.

                  Good luck!

ditto on the welcomes OttR, good post.

hey, snus really kicks ass when it comes to ditching cigs. there's a billion different flavors out there, if ya like what you're doing now you're in for a treat. take tobacco tom up on his offer, and get yourself a sampler pack to begin to check out the flavors. after a while you're gonna find some snus you just like more than others, ya just gotta try 'em out. i always gotta have oden's es kanel, it's my snus of righteousness, the father of thunder.

i've been buying from getsnus, i started with a sampler and some other stuff - http://www.getsnus.com/snus/portion_...c=6&p=Samplers - i can't remember what my first order was. there's a good sampler that sage recommends from northerner - http://www.northerner.com/en/snus/No...Out_Boxes-300/ - i think it's that top 10 deal.

hey, when it comes down to the nuts and bolts of quitting cigs, take a look at my sig. that's over 5000 cigs in less than 3 months i haven't smoked. true. what i found that worked for me was to remember that i had the vitamin nic i needed, that the rest was in my head. you'll probably fidget around for a few days, but that shit passes and then it's over. anyway, glad to have you aboard.

http://smokefreequitmeter.com/ mlkamer, just plug in the info. when my neighbor quit he wanted one of 'em the first day, it does work pretty good for the motivation deal.

Welcome - one of the best things I've ever done is use snus.

A word of advice - do not buy a roll of 10 snus in an order until you've been snussing a while - give it 3 to 6 months (my past expensive mistakes). You're tastes will change drastically as you snus until you eventually settle on brands that you like. You will also find brands that you don't like. In hindsight - I'd buy one can of each brand that Swedish Match sell. That would last you a while and it would be a valuable education.

If you're coming off the cigs - stay away from the mini's. They're too weak. The only one worth taking is Thunder Frosted mini.

I've been snusing for almost three months, and the only repeat I've bought was General White. There are so many different kinds to try, and then you have los. Whole different experience! I still bum an occasional cig. from my wife, but I reach for them less and less. Snus will win out in the end.

I have like 80 cans of mini from when I started, and couldn't get the fix I needed, so I bumped up to regular/strong and now i have all these minis. Yeah, it sucks.
