Do you have to pull the thing off, or does it release you on it's own and swim off?

      Why is that a waste?
After the pain subsides you can pop the snus right in your mouth.

Do not pull it off with your bare hands. Use tweezrs or gloves to pry off any tentacles at the sting site, this along with seawater to rinse, and a rough object to scrape off the last of them. It's not really a big deal if you know what you're doing.

I've never had one stick to me, but I know others have. I imagine rinsing it off in the water is all it takes. It doesn't stick to you like an octopus or anything, and I imagine it doesn't want to be there any more than you want it there.

Well, at least you knew enough not to piss on yourself....there are a lot of people out there who still believe that actually works. :P

Back home in Florida, the currents in the Gulf of Mexico near the shoreline are not usually very strong, so they have all kinds of those things floating around. Sting rays are a problem there as well.....I caught one once bottom-fishing off of a pier, and after seeing the tail barb on that bastard, I have had reservations about going in the water since.

I'm disappointed to hear that that's a myth, but I guess it's good I figured it out before I actually got stung by a jellyfish

A buddy of mine's little girl got a stingray barb through her leg. She was in bad shape for a couple of days, but she's doing well now.
