    Snus Evaluations

I thought this thread might be useable for reviews or thoughts of a snus, any snus, new or old.

I'll start with a first impression review of:

    Offroad Original Portion.

I have never had this before, and I sit here with an unopened can. Has a good date to 2010, so it's fresh. I have recently been mainly using Ettan Original Portion here with me at work, so it will probably be compared mostly with that. I am drinking some coffee, with some creamer and sweetener, which may interfere with it, but this is a first impression review and I can do a followup later.

Offroad seems to not be liked much overall, but the loose being liked most, and certain flavor portions appeal to certain people. But I don't hear much about Offroad Original Portions. I do like the Cranberry Loose quite a bit myself. I had some Cranberry and Apple portions, I didn't hate them, but I did not prefer them, finding at least with portions, I prefer a non-flavored. So, now I will opne the can. Personally, the actual name, Offroad, well, I would have made a cooler brand name. Can design is simple, meh, ok.

OK, I opened it and smelled it, not sure what it smells like, maybe some pepper, but not sure. Not very moist, but it's been frozen since yesterday. Kinda big portion, or seems so. I flattened it out and stuck it in.

Hmm... not bad. Kinda buttery, seem to get a salty sweetness. Took a drink of coffee. This rich buttery slight sweet snus goes well with coffee. I know sometimes people complain of the Offroad portion material, maybe it's the big seal flaps. The only portion so far that has kinda bother me was Odens. So far this Offroad Original Portion is not bad at all.

I'll post a follow up, or after impressions later.

Anyone wants to use this thread to post their views on a snus, please do.

I'm on my second portion of Offroad Original, and I think it's pretty darn good. I don't see how anyone could not like this, let alone hate it. I'll definately get some more in the future. I think it's better than Swedish Camel Original Portion, better than Tre Ankare, maybe better than Roda Lacket, but I need to revisit that one, and better than Odens Original Portion. The list may grow.

I'll toss my hat in the ring. What the heck.

        Gotlandssnus Anis (Grey) Portion
I'm a man who likes his black jelly beans. Wait, let me clarify that. I'm a man who would kill for a bag of black jelly beans. Come Easter, my kids know they better hand them over...or else. My wife buys a bag just for me. So I know Anise. Anise and I are good pals.

So when I began using snus I naturally had the inclination to try Gotlandssnus Anis. I have my first ever can in my fridge right now, so these are my initial impressions.

The packaging is simple, tasteful, elegant, but without a catch lid (boo). Upon opening the can for the first time I suddenly realized I was in heaven. The aroma of tobacco mixed with anise wafted upward to my nose. The smell is not overpowering, but pungent and definitely distinguishable. After placing the portion in my upper lip, I have to admit that I was a little bit disappointed. The taste was...off. If you're looking for a big hit of anise with this snus, you may not find what you're looking for.

Once I had it under my lip for a while, I enjoyed the constant, subtle hint of anise, especially if I reactivated it by puffing up my upper lip (this is a technique I use if I'm after a hit of flavor). There's very little juice.

The odd thing I noticed after removing the portion was that it left a slight chalky residue on my teeth and gums, something I haven't yet experienced with any other snus.

If you're into anise, I definitely recommend this snus, but be forewarned: It doesn't really go well with drinks or food so, if you're a person who keeps a portion in while drinking or eating, you may not enjoy the result.

I'll give it a try: Grov Svart

I got my first of this a couple of weeks ago. The description on the website sounded so good that I ordered 2 cans, and it's a good thing I did! It's probably my favorite snus right now.

Portion: The portion looked kind of big to me but I noticed it's not filled very "fat" like Skruf and others are, so it flattens nicely and fits very well in the lip. It's a "black" white portion so it's kind of dry but the material is very nice.

Taste: The taste is very weird. Not in a bad way, but it's very hard to describe. When I first put one in it tasted like straight anise. Then later on it tasted like leather. Then it tasted like leathery anise with vanilla extract on it. It sounds very odd but it was very, very delicious. The more I use it the more I love it. It's a good morning snus as well because the flavors don't taste disgusting with mint after brushing and aren't too robust for just waking up.

Nicotine: I think these are supposed to have 11mg of nicotine per portion, but for some reason it feels like more to me. It's a wonderful nic hit but not enough to make your head spin or any of that. It's just enough for a good pick-me-up in the morning or in the middle of the day when you start to get slow and lazy.

Overall, I love this stuff. It's marketed as a "manly" snus but I'm a woman and I love it anyway. Oh well.

            Phillip Morris 1847 Original

Great review, Gizmer. Grov Svart is a complex beast of a portion. It makes a great addition in a rotation, and breaks the monotony.

After reading a couple of recommendations, I decided to give PM 1847 a whirl. My initial impression came from the packaging. The tin itself is a work of art - aluminum, with striking black lettering and a discreet catch lid on the bottom surface of the tin.

As for the snus itself - upon opening the can, I was greeted by a strong bergamot odor mixed with an earthiness that was unlike other snuses I've tried. The portion was moist, but not wet like Camel Original. The portion fit nicely under my lip and was comfortable. My first reaction was confusion - I couldn't decide whether I loved or hated this snus. The bergamot flavor came on strong, almost instantaneously. About 15 min in, the strong bitter taste of earthy soil slid right underneath the bergamot topnote. I wasn't expecting this at all. Disturbed, I put the tin aside and went to others in my rotation.

Determined to finish off the can, I gave it another chance after a week had passed. That same earthiness kicked in fairly early. My perception of it changed, however. It was a nice change of pace from Camel and Retro (which has the same earthiness, but in a lesser amount). WOW! What a complex flavor. It's challenging, yet at the same time mysteriously appealing. Overall: Not an everyday snus for me, but a nice occasional change of pace.

            Packaging: 8/10
            Portion material: 6/10
            Filler quality: 7/10
            Flavor: 7/10 (Unique!)
Potential as an everyday snus: 3/10

I will add in one of my recent tries. I recently got a free pack of Oden Original Portions from my getsnus.com order. I never really had the urge to try these, but I figured I would since I got the can.

I opened it up, and oh...oh no...I recognize this smell. And it is not some food product or anything you would put in your mouth on even a bad day. It smells like...a hot day on a farm. My parents kept horses, so I spent a lot of my child life around barns with lots of horses. The smell wafting up off the freshly opened can (and it is in date) is the background smell of horse manure on a hot summer day after it has been raining at the barn. I mean exactly like it. For anyone who did not grow up around horses, the smell at the zoo when you just got within smell range of the elephant pen is pretty close.

This was a bad omen. I put the lid back on the tried not to think about it for a while longer. After about a half an hour I started feeling particularly brave and decided to try out a portion. I did not inhale and just popped it under my lip. At first, I started to mildly taste the same manure smell that was coming off of the can. Then, after about 5 minutes or so, it stopped. At that point, it really had no taste. After a bit longer I spit it out.

What is sad is that I had this when I actually ran short on snus while my local retailer was out, and I ended up choking down about half the pack while I was waiting. The manure smell/taste never let up. The only up-side is that it went away pretty quickly once I popped it.

I will never be getting these again. Luckily, in my new order that arrived a couple of days ago, getsnus.com was merciful and gave me a free pack of Ettan instead. If they send me another Oden Original, I will likely just throw it away.

I'd join in but all my reviews say the same thing and fit into 4 categories.

                1. Tried it. Liked it. Gonna always have some on hand.
                2. Tried it. Liked it. Will get some again.
                3. Tried it. It's ok. Not for me.
                4. Good Lord that was awful.

My experience with Odens Classic original portion is not the same at all. I like these, enough, but with so many I like more, I doubt I'd get more. I didn't notice elephant pen smell. Had a sorty spicey sweet smell to me, which is how it tasted too. It wasn't bad, and I'd say good. But what really was the worst think about these, to me, is the too fat portion, and portion material. I know some believe these are made by V2, but my Offroad Original Portion were not like this. So, if I get some Odens Classic Original Portion as a free can, or in a trade, I'm happy enough. As I think they are so-so ok/good, that I will use them, but the portion fatness/material I found uncomfortable. Nowadays, I tend to mash my portions flat, and with these, it does help, but they have a tendancy to puff up again. I do like these more than the Kanel.

Ok, a little rambling 1st impression review.
1st time ever with this snus. Jacobsson's Classic.
Cool looking can. Neat star designed ash tray lid.
                    Open, smells good.
Fluffed up a portion, then pressed it flat, popped it in.
                    Hmmm....
                    Hmmmm.....
Salty.... I snus all day everyday, but I am getting high salt from this.
Earlier I did some Offroad Cranberry, but after 2 tries, no, it was 3 tries, it kept breaking up, so I thought I'd try this.
Seems bitter too. Any fans of this?
                    Drinking some diet cola.
Fat portion. Reminds me of Odens portion size.
Bitter saltiness.... not getting anything else.
I'll post a follow up when the portion is dead.
Immediate response in not good. Let's see if it changes.

                        Roda Lacket Los

I'm not a frequent los user - usually my use of los is restricted to the house. With that said, I love the taste of los. It's much more apparent than a portion, without all of that portion material getting in the way.

The packaging itself was not remarkable. Clean, but nothing special (red label with a pronounced r.l.). Upon opening my first can of Roda Lacket Los, I was greeted by a musky, slightly sweet licorice odor. The grain was fine cut. I hand-baked the first pris from the can. It was soft and clay-like. My first pris from the can failed, as a hand-baked it wrong. I had mud-mouth within 10 min and it was too strong for me to bear, and I spit it out. I decided to throw my snus-pride aside and use the prismaster. I reinserted a better pris into my mouth and the first thing I noticed was a subtle fruit note - dried apricots. That and a pronounced tobacco taste. My first impression - this is really tasty stuff! It's like a more subtle, sweeter Claq Qui with less nic kick (after all, Claq is the sterk version of Roda). The main complaint is the pris - it tends to run a bit and creates a thick drip between my canine and premolar. Not a problem at home, but not suitable (like many other los) for public.

                        Packaging: 6/10
Grind: 8/10 (easy to hand bake, feels great in the mouth)
                        Flavor: 9/10
                        Quality: 8/10 (moist, smells great)
Potential as an everyday snus: 8/10 (If I was a homebody)

                          Grovsnus White

This is the first time I've tried it and I'm about halfway through the can.

Upon opening the can, I was expecting a 'normal' citrusy kind of smell, but boy was I wrong! It's almost got a funky smell to it like a Nick and Johnny east/west portion. Which co-incides with the taste.

The flavor is complicated. It has tones of a normal citrusy white, but also has undertones of what I can only describe as 'asian spice'. The undertones are similar to the N&J east/west flavor. They both had a kind of eastern spice flavor to them, and these have that underneath.

All in all a very good snus. Sophisticated flavor. Definitely ordering this again.
                          ~~

I'll ship in, and hope that you guys see me as trustworthy, allthough I'm quite new here

I'll start off with Skruf Sterk Portion

Skruf sterk is the only kind of portion I can snus regularely, but I mostly use it when I'm tired of loose..

                            Design:
The design of the can is clean and stylish, but nothing special. Its white with a red line around, and some gray trees in the background.
                            5/10

Smell: The smell of skruf almost kicks you in the face when you open the can, and though many people is not so fond of it, I kinda like it.. My grade on this one will be based on the most common opinion.
                            4/10

Taste: Luckily, for some people, skruf sterk tastes way better than it smells. It tastes of strong tobacco, and thats what snus is supposed to taste like.
                            8/10

The portions: The portions are large, well filled, and dry. Dry portions is a plus in my book, because it takes up to a couple of hours before it starts to run.
                            9/10

Effect: This is a strong snus, and the effect is great. Personally, I dont feel so much of the nicotine before I put a couple of portions in, but thats maybe because I snus up to a can a day
                            8/10

Final: 6.8/10. It is a lovely snus if you like a snus you can have all day, and still be strong.

Didn't have so much time writing this, but hope you'll like it

For those that have had both, more than just a couple of times, tell me if you agree:

Lucky Whites is so very similar to taste and feel of Tourney Original.
