Difficulty baking as tin gets older?

Hey snussers. I got my first tin of loose Roda Lacket last Friday and have been enjoying it very much. I have a little less than half of the can left, but I think the property of the snus is starting to change. I keep it refrigerated, but today it seems the snus is becoming a bit harder to bake. I don't really have a problem forming the pris, but it seems much more prone to cracking while I bake it. The expiration date isn't until December. Is this normal?

Regardless I love the loose stuff. I can't say the same as much for the portions, but I've only had the white ones. I put in an order for the loose sampler yesterday at BuySnus. I can't wait to try Probe and Goteborgs!

from what I hear since RL is particularly fine and 'play-doh' like, it's notoriously easy to bake. maybe you're not putting the lid on all the way when you store it?
that's my only guess. unless you're at the very last bit of snus left in the can, it should stay relatively the same moisture level if left in the fridge. you should try using ziplock bags (and squeeze/suck as much air out of them as you can before sealing). you can try adding a few drops or mist of water...try using good pure water though, or else the other impurities might catalyze some sort of degradation to the snus.

if you're having trouble doing it manually
try the prismaster if you have one. just poke it down onto the snus repeatedly...this will condense it in the tool...once you get enough in there, then hold the prismaster upright on the bottom of the can nice and even, use your fingernail to get the edge of the slider grip (or just stick a small rod in the back end the tube) and try to push down...that will mash it even further and make a tighter pris.

Hmm that's an interesting idea Coffey. I wonder what would happen if I tried to put a tin of snus in my cigar humidor. I bet I would get some interesting flavors!

I think I'm just being too critical of myself as I over-inspect my prillas since I'm new to the loose game. I mean I don't have a problem forming them and they stay together fine in my lip, I've just noticed their tendency to form hairline cracks as I roll them around in my fingers. Kinda like play-doh does! :lol:

After you open a tin the snus starts to dry out faster. If it has been open for a week or so you'll certainly notice that it's not as moist and sticky as it is when it's new - this will always happen. Other than the suggestions above, there's not much you can do. Keep it cool and zip it up in a bag if you're keeping a tin open for a while.

Yeah, keeping it cool definitely helped. I just rolled one up and no cracking whatsoever. I think another thing to watch out for is over-perfection. If you keep baking for more than a couple minutes a lot of the moisture seems to rub into your skin and out of the pris, which is no good!

Don't forget that snus should be kept refrigerated. There's people on this board who scoff at the idea, but that's what the Swedes say (and the tin too), and my experience agrees.

if you don't mind the taste change you can do an old snus trick:
put some slices of cucumber in it.
It moystens it up, but be carefull, it might get too wet.

I used to do that with American dip, except I'd use a piece of apple. Works very well.
