Sage's Retro Replacement Quest

Hey sage, I finished a can of portions last night and it was tome to throw another into the rotation. Guess what I picked? The free can of Retro that buysnus sent me. After slightly over a year since I had one (I injured myself on that date so I remember, July 7 2008) you want to hear my verdict? DELICIOUS. And I distinctly remember getting bummed out on that one can of Retro last year. I remember standing on top of Granit Mountain in the Cascades thinking "damnit I'm on top of a mountain and this damn Retro is all I brought", but this time around, I'm loving it, and that says a lot for me and an 8mg portion. I feel your loss now! I have almost a whole can. Can't wait for each and every one. This would've kicked ass as a los. Good and salty

LOL, I am so glad to hear you like it this time. Honestly, and I hope I always stayed respectful, I just never understood why you were like one of the very few who actually said they disliked it. I just couldn't figure out what there was about this snus that someone would actively "dislike it"

Elyxr?? Of course. And at least 15 other snuses I sometimes like that know many other folks wouldn't like. But Retro, I always just thought it was one of the least offensive snuses out there. Again, whole reason it became my base snus upon which everything else I use is based.

Don't know what went wrong last year. But I just wanted you to say thanks for keeping an open mind, giving it a 2nd chance. To me, that is what both snus and Snuson is all about. Reason I will make even a third attempt to like los again soon. Cause I think we need to always keep an open mind.

When I get done searching for Replacement, I expect to still have a few cans left. If Retro hasn't come back yet, I will send you a surprise can again in 5 or 6 months. :wink:

I've only tried retro regular portions. I got a can a while ago because of all the great reviews from Sage and others. I only use one every day or two and still have a few left. They are very tasty portions, I must say.

The latest reports on V2 portions have grabbed my interest. It sounds like they tweaked the formula a bit, and maybe they're palatable now? I've always gotten a lot of off flavors from the portions, and pretty much gave them up. I may have to get another can, and see if I think they've improved.

I'll say this much. And again, this is too early to draw any final conclusions. We all know snus can turn quickly.

But at least tonight, I would say the Phantom White easily replaces Camel White. I am liking them more. So far. I really am thinking they compare well with Retro. I keep going back and forth, and so far, the Phantom really is holding up well

So far, I am really excited at the possibility of these. I have a great 6 days ahead using both.

And just zero off flavors from this lxskllr, and I know exactly what you are talking about.

And Mr. Snuffleupagus, I wish you could have tried the Whites. Instead of a few a day, you can use them all; day and they stay perfect

Still working on Phantom White. It is losing some ground with intensive use. Should be done in about 4 days with full review.

I have some Phantom Brown White Portion. It's OK, but that's about it. I am suprised Offroad has not made a white portion. I think Offroad Original has a goodness to it.

The Brown is interesting, but too flavored to ever be an all day thing.

LD white is a major contender from what I have heard. working on a possible deal to get me some since Iw as an idiot and forgot it in my order yesterday. :wink:

Phantom White

So Phantom was number two on my test list.

I liked it at first, nice flavor, stronger flavor than many whites (i.e. Skruff, Ettan, etc.). At first. was very pleasant. But as i used it more and more, that initial flavor that I tasted at first became stronger and stronger. typical for many snus, reason I was so in love with Retro as that flavor just never turned, and I knew it was unusual. Unfortunately, the Phantom just couldn't hold up to excessive use. I found as I got to the end of the can, I was kinda dreading it a bit.

So again, a fine snus I will probably use once a month, a nice change, interesting and all that. But a failure as a Retro Replacement.

Next up, I am going old school...... General White.

I have one in right now, so some initial comments. Wow, not as bad as I remembered. I am immediately comforted as if worse case came, i can't get any snus but local, general only thing I could get, I can see myself being happy being like the Swede's and only using it. now as for being a Retro Replacement?? I don't see it. It has a slight bitterness that I suspect will be more noticeable the more I use.

So maybe not a Retro replacement if I had other options. But if I had too, i could absolutely use this all the time. I think it is good. maybe not the best, but good. And good is 1,000,000,000,000,000 times better than going back to Ciggs if pact screws us. So if nothing else, I am finding a huge comfort today using the General.

A final accounting of it will come when I finish this can.....

What is the predominant taste in General White? I have a can, just haven't tried it yet.

If General White was the only snus, I'd be fine with it. Of course the variety is great, and I don't think it's my favorite of all, but it is a great go-to snus(IMO).

There really isn't one. Just a slightly bitter tobacco taste.

And Tom, I agree. but that is a big thing with all the "possible" changes coming. Am grateful I like it as much as I do. And who knows, 2nd one, i seem to be liking even more than the first. maybe this stuff will really grow on me.

Will keep using it back to back with Retro these next 5 -6 days.

I agree when you say that you can love a snus like N&J and then one day it will turn on you. General is the one that never has in over two years of constant use. I think General basically IS snus and almost everything else is a variation on it. To me it is not only the best snus but is the baseline on which all other snus must be judged.
