opinions of a newbie to the snus game

    Hello everyone,

I'm a new Snus user. Got into it while out in NC, USA over the past year and started using the incredibly hyped up Camel Snus (Original). Now back in the UK, I have been making good use of buysnus.com for all my snus needs

I have tried a few brands so far. General Onyx, Goteborgs Rape No2 and Skruf regular. The General Onyx is my favorite by a long way so far. I found the larger pouches and deeper taste much more fulfillig than the Skruf. The Rape was OKAY in my opinion, it was a nice chillin snus, and I certainly agree with the other posts on No2 + herbs.... a very relaxing mix. As for the Skruf, I have found it to have a nice intense buzz, although not particularly long lasting, but this may be due to the rapid consumption of flavor.

I've got 2x Diplomats, 2x Ettan Regular, and tins of General Regular, Goteborgs No2 and Skruf Regular.

I am very much looking forward to trying the Ettan, Diplomat and General as I suspect they may be closer to Onyx than my last two choices

Awesome forum you guys have here and I have really enjoyed having it available during my Snus infancy

What would y'all recommend as similar to Onyx?

    Welcome to the forum, Dean!

I'm a big Onyx fan myself and I think you'll enjoy Diplomat. It tastes a little bit different in portions than it does loose, as all snus does. Not much can really compare to Onyx, other than General, I suppose, but if you replace that licorice finish in Onyx with a well-blended fruit mix then you're tasting a Diplomat. Wait, that sounded dirty... anyway, yeah... I'd go with the Diplomat.

      Hi Dean.

I agree with KentuckySnusser; do try the Diplomat! But the closest thing to Onyx is - of course - the original General. They are basically the same ('The One Taste'), but I'll try to explain the few differences (as I see them):

      Onyx:

This deluxe version is leaning much more towards licorice, while the lemon-notes seem to keep a certain distance. Also, the pepper-like qualities, which we know from the original, is much more subtle, and this leaves more room to an element of sweetness. I also find the nuances of Onyx to be much more 'clear', meaning that I find it much easier to put my finger on the different layers of taste.

      General:

The original variant is more characterized by its lemony qualities, while the licorice can be somewhat difficult to spot. I find that the tobacco taste is more noticeable in this one, and - as opposed to the Onyx - it has this distinct underlaying pepper-note that goes really well with both the lemon aroma and the tobacco itself. In the end all the elements seem to melt together in a 'muddy' wholeness, and never becomes as crystal clear as it's luxurious little brother.

But this is a highly subjective matter ... just go ahead, man, try 'em all, let the search begin!

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm defiantly looking forward to trying both General and Diplomat. Especially Diplomat, that fruity finish you talk of just sounds incredible... I just hope it's not too overpowering.

The hardest part is keeping all these tins in my fridge while I finish the one I have open! Damn... I just want to try them all ha.

With regards to the fat-lip look. Do you think this decreases as you get to handle the snus better and your gums etc adapt to usage? Or do you think you just become acustom to talk with it there etc and tend not to notice it after a while?

I still feel a little weird talking to people with it in, especially when meeting new people who aren't familiar with my snus habit or Scandinavian culture. Would you guys say los is less obvious in terms of profile? I still can't smile with a pouch in, although I would guess los really wouldn't help there haha...

        Peace.

        Dean

          Okay... *update*.

I couldn't resist, opened up the Diplomat.

Oh my word... this is GOOD. The pouch actually fits a lot nicer than the Skruf pouches. But anyway, the taste! Damn! It's almost got a fresh herb taste to it... like maybe parsley or basil? I can't quite put my finger on it but I don't have a clean pallet right now so I may be mistaken.

I do really like this Diplomat though. With the swishness of the packaging as well I'm *virtually* sold... just need to try Ettan and General regular now!

          Snus on!

Diplomat is really quite nice. The loose is very slick as well - nice and coarse, even more than Grov, I'd say, but with a nice, light and and crisp taste. Ahh, haven't bought any in a while now but may give it another go, I think. 8)
