General (White Portion) Review. I did it!

well guys, the day has finally come. i've been using general (white portion) all day today exclusively, and i'm loving it. i guess my long standing beef with bergamot has come to an end. also want to thank sage for the continued kicks to get off the flavored snus, and all of you and the words you've spoken about snus with bergamot, because i wouldn't have tried it if i didn't hear about it all the time

    ---------
General (White Portion) Review. 19 Sep 09.

General (White Portion) Snus. A review months in the making. I was wondering when I would FINALLY get to this point, and the day has come. Shortly after learning of Swedish Snus and going from Camel "SNUS" American to the world of Swedish Snus, my first order was for the Swedish Match White Portion Sampler. After reading SO much about General, it was to be the first can I opened up. As soon as I opened the can, before I could even say how cool the star pattern was, the smell hit me like a ton of bricks and I put it in the console of my car where it sat for months until I threw it out. The rest of the White Portion kit went back in my fridge and I went a different path - the flavored snus path. General Mini Mint, J-Ice, so on and so forth.

Over the past few months I've been experimenting here and there, trying different things, and branching out in the snus world. I recently tried Skruf Stark, my first venture into the world of Bergamot after running from it when I first entered the world of snus. As tastes do, mine have matured, and I was impressed by the Skruf Stark, something that suprised me, because I have long since had no desire to try snus with the flavor of the highly discussed element of Bergamot. But I'm glad to say that my tastes have matured and I can now appreciate Bergamot as a unique flavor. I knew it was time to give General snus a chance.

A little bit about General Snus. Usually I don't go this in depth with a snus, but with one with a history as deep as General, I feel it's important to be shared. I appreciate it more after learning about where General came from and then experiencing not just the rich flavor but the rich history. General is made with top secret recipe that, although being refined and time giving way to more advanced production methods, the snus is still the same as it was over 100 years ago. There is a unique blend of 23 different of the best tobaccos from four different continents. General is the world's best selling, and most well known snus. A snus with a rich history like that really has alot to live up to. General sets the standard. And I can honestly say it lives up to it's name and proud reputation. I tried the White Portion as my first go into General snus, and I greatly enjoyed it. When I opened the can, my sense of smell must have adapted. Well, not adapted, but I've learned to appreciate the smell of Swedish Snus. I like it. It's a beautiful thing. i took out a portion from the cool star pattern. I mention the star pattern because one end of the snus portion is thicker than the other, to form this pattern. So it did require a little fluffing to even the snus out and make an even portion. After I put it in, I noticed how comfortable it was. The portion bag was soft, the snus was soft, in the terms of the ever popular term "mouth feel", it felt good. Comfortable.

Being a white portion, the nic hit first, and then the flavor gradually grew and matured into a great experience. It was amazing, completely different from anything I have ever had before! A mild taste of salt began, and then small notes of pepper. A taste of citrus started to blend in, and continued to grow, balancing and blending perfectly with the mild taste of salt and the small notes of pepper began to grow until all these flavors - salt, pepper, citrus, and the 23 different types of tobacco from four different continents. As I continued to savor these tastes, I knew it was an experience like no other. I was enjoying a product that has a strong, rich history. The flavor speaks for itself. All of these elements combined to form a unique, pure, very distinct flavor that proves why General carries the logo, "The One Taste." Because they can back it up. No other snus exhibits flavor like this.

So it took 6 months to get to this point. I should have done this a long time ago. I guess people fear what they don't know, fear what they don't understand. But I know now what I was missing out on, why so many people go with snus of this flavor, this variety. There's a reason General has been around since Johan A Boman created the recipe over 150 years ago. Because it is a pure, quality snus with a rich history and a flavor that can't be matched. "The One Taste".

Nice review mate. I started with General portions (a friend gave some to me) and I really liked them. Recently my sample can of Onyx came and so far I am liking it as well. Funny thing though is that I cannot stand the Los. Maybe it’s the cut but whatever it is, the los tastes like over priced caulking or putty to me.

Regardless, I’m glad your horizon expansion experiment has been a success. It will be interesting to see if your tastes develop in this direction and if the flavored brands you love at the present maintain their high place in your rotation or if they will be surpassed by more classic tasting brands

Anyway, thanks for the good work here on the GWs
When it's my time to go, I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my uncle did....... Not screaming in terror like his passengers

That's one thing I've noticed, I put in a Thunder Frosted tonight and it tasted different, more "sweet" or "minty" than usual. It was interesting how trying something else on a longer time frame can help me pick up tastes in my regular snus that I guess I just phased out or stopped noticing. Whether that's good or bad remains to be seen, though.

There's a reason General is the most popular snus in the world...it's because it's awesome.

I'm glad you like it! I love General Whites. I'm a big fan of whites all around. Unlike regular portions, the flavor creeps up on you and lasts longer too. That second point is a big one for me as I try to only use about 5 portions a day, but could easily double that if I wasn't concerned about the economics of using that much snus. Since I use a smaller amount, I love the way I can pop one in, start getting the nicotine, and then once it starts to fade, I get the flavors. Like you said in your review, it starts out being very subtle and continuously grows into something very rich and flavorful. It's like a three course meal!

And since the flavor is very subtle, it makes a great pair with almost any type of beverage. Coffee, tea, soda, beer, you can't go wrong.

I've had pretty much the same experience with the General White. It was the first one I tried after Camel. I already had a portion sampler ordered from buysnus and was not wanting to wait, so I took the drive up to pipe world in Austin and got a can of General White and a can of CatchDry Peppermint.

The General white pretty much just tasted like salty ass to me at the time. I stuck with it, because I needed to quit smoking, but I never ended up finishing that can. My order came in and I found some I liked in there and the GW ended up getting all dried out and thrown away.

So one year later and General White is pretty much my favorite snus now. Go figure.

I'm glad someone else had this happen, I don't feel like such an oddball now.

I am willing to bet that after a couple of months the minty and sweet flavoured snus will slip lower and lower down your list until you find you don't use them often at all. There is just something about the natural flavoured and bergamot snus that puts all the flavoured snus to shame IMO.

Unless of course you really really like minty and sweet stuff that is......

It's what I started with, I guess I'm just a creature of habit. But as I've opened my mind, I've enjoyed alot of what I never thought I would, including the bergamot flavor of snus. I'm giving it time, not ordering any rolls, it going bergamot-crazy over the next few months, and then I'll have SOME idea, I'm sure, of what I'm into most.

Certainly, that matches my experience over 2 1/2 years. First 4 months, nothing but flavored. Next 18 months, literally half and half. Last 8 months, most flavored I just stopped using, other than Oden's klanel ES, but not sure you can call that "sweet". Just, with time, really only preferred true tobacco flavored snus.

NOT counting Discreet. But that is just so different, it really is in a different category in my head. Now, I use snus, snuff AND Discreet, each has it's place in my heart

I think Oden's is different because it has a cinnamon flavor, but not "cinnamon sugar". When I used to cook alot, I used shaved cinnamon cane alot on food, because the pure flavor of cinnamon is a great additive, not to be confused with cinnamon sugar, which is overprocessed and way too sweet. Oden's has that pure cinnamon flavor, I think that's why I've sided with it so much lately.

I definitely agree Chad. One of only 4 snus (now 2 I guess) that I will buy by the roll.

GW was the second portion I ever had, after a dry mini mint. The mini had already kicked my ass as I wasn't used to the nicotine from snus. A couple hours later I had a GW portion, didn't recognize the symptoms of nicotine overdose until it was too late, and spent the rest of the evening nauseous and shakey.

After that, I couldn't even get a whiff of it without feeling sick. I was worried that I'd never be able to snus GW again, but after a couple days I had another one and I was fine. Which is good because it does have good flavor.

I love Gen. White. It's my go to snus without Camel White. Glad to see you on this side Chad!!
