    New Onico Tin

I doubt anyone uses this here, but it looks pretty cool nonetheless. Comes out next week.

          Shouldn't those cans be pink?

If it's tobacco and nicotine free, what is it?

It's not even tobacco. Chewbacca knows what's in that stuff.

Onico composed of plant fibber-based portion pouches, flavoured with food approved flavourings. Consumers using the product rule as a complement to his snuff, to cut down on nicotine intake. The product is classified as a food and should be stored in the refrigerator.

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Onico – risk of dental caries essentially eliminated

Onico – Swedish Match’s vegetable-fiber-based tobacco and nicotine-free portion snus – now has a new recipe based on oats and cacao fiber. The new recipe means that the risk of dental caries is essentially eliminated, assuming that the user has normal oral hygiene.

During the early summer, Swedish Match encountered serious production disruptions due to quality problems associated with Onico’s base raw material of corn fiber. Around the same time, dentists issued a warning that Onico – in rare cases – could give rise to dental caries in users who have exposed tooth necks in their upper jaw (also known as root decay). This story was carried by many different media.

The cans were printed with a text referring users to the website www.onico.nu where Swedish Match described the problem.

“To date, some ten cases of dental caries have been reported from a total of approximately 100,000 Onico users,” says Freddi Lewin, doctor and medical advisor at Swedish Match. “We have paid the costs for dental treatment and any travel expenses, loss of earnings and other costs for the individuals in these cases.”

Swedish Match swiftly initiated a partnership with the Institute of Odontology at the University of Gothenburg to resolve the problem involving dental caries. Various recipes were produced and tested on human subjects during the summer and autumn. The best alternative as the base raw material proved to be a mixture of oats and cacao fiber combined with approved flavor additives.

“The new product contributes to very low acidification around the pouch. With this recipe, the risk of dental caries is essentially non-existent, which has been confirmed by the Department of Cariology at the Institute of Odontology,” say Freddi Lewin.

The new recipe also means that the production problems have been eliminated.

The new Onico is being dispatched to stores starting this week. The color of the pouches is slightly darker than before and, according to Swedish Match’s consumer tests, they are considered to be richer and more similar to standard snus portion pouches.

Onico’s target group comprises users who want to reduce their intake of nicotine and alternate between standard portion-packed snus and a tobacco- and nicotine-free alternative. Some people also use Onico to completely quit using snus.

The new Onico is available in four varieties: original and mini, which are both similar in taste to traditional snus, and peppermint and juniper.

I have the pepparmint in my fridge. It's got a nice enough flavor, but it's been in my fridge since last November I think. I guess that's the telling opinion of it :^D

That's right. I remember something, maybe one of the Northerner videos (maybe not) reassuring consumers that these products didn't taste like carrots or beets even though they contain vegetable fiber.

Mmm, yummy. I've totally change my mind. I wants me some of that.

Hmm. Which smiley to use for teh sarcasm?

You realize of course I know I'm being unfair. It's fun!

Funny you should mention that. I /also/ have Jakobsson's nicotine free Classic in my fridge, and it tastes distinctly of carrots :^D I guess a little more accurately, is it tastes kind of like carrot cake. It's pretty good, but the buzz sucks :^D
