I think there may be just a *touch* of Anise in it. But only a touch, and I'm not even sure about it. Might be a good question for Markus and Joakim.

The dominant flavor is vanilla. Kind of a rich, dark vanilla leathery tobacco-y taste.
Marshmallows and leather is what it tastes like to me. It's kind of good, but I'm not a fan of white portions, and the flavor gets old after awhile. It's unique and interesting; definitely worth a try by everyone.

Very interesting flavor IMO. Nothing else like it. It is a pretty strong flavor though so you might not like it and it is easy to burn out on it. I use it sparingly and think it's great especially in the morning with coffee.

I agree that there is barely a touch of anise or licorice mixed with a bunch of vanilla and maybe something else.

I use it only occasionally, but it's one of my faves, a strong portion that brings plenty of flavor without disappointment. And it's another option besides Onyx in a "black" portion.

Grov Black is one of my favorites. I get a leather and vanilla flavor from it. I have to say it tastes nothing at all like chocolate to me, let alone Coco Puffs. But we can both agree that it is awesome snus.

Anise (not licorice)+ and a hint vanilla

I do not like anise, so I do not like Grov black.

this is is a top 3 snus definitely. the flavor is intense and rich, so i try my best to limit my use to special occasions in order to savor this unique flavor.

not that it matters but ii really dig the can too... it looks pretty cool and doesnt feel as flimsy as most other brands.

Anise is from a flower and licorice is from a root, right? Is it the same plant?

I got the Grov Black because I liked the Grov so much and thought
the black was stronger. Nothing exceeds like excess, right?
I don't hate it but the flavor is more of a once in awhile thing. It's
not a can I'll take to work for the day.
Tastes best with a hearty stout, imho.

                  Bat

There are 2 plants for anise

                    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anise
Anise (Pimpinella anisum, also anĂs (stressed on the second syllable) and aniseed) is a flowering plant in the family Apiaceae native to the eastern Mediterranean region and southwest Asia known for its flavor that resembles liquorice, fennel, and tarragon.

                    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_anise
Star anise, star aniseed, badiane or Chinese star anise, is a spice that closely resembles anise in flavor, obtained from the star-shaped pericarp of Illicium verum, a small native evergreen tree of southwest China.

                    and one for licorice

                    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Licorice
Liquorice (English) or Licorice (American English) is the root of Glycyrrhiza glabra from which a sweet flavour can be extracted. The liquorice plant is a legume (related to beans and peas), native to southern Europe and parts of Asia. It is not related to Anise, Star Anise and Fennel, which are the source of superficially similar flavouring compounds....The flavor of licorice comes mainly from a sweet-tasting compound called anethole ("trans"-1-methoxy-4-(prop-1-enyl)benzene), an aromatic, unsaturated ether compound also found in anise, fennel, and other herbs. Additional sweetness in licorice comes from glycyrrhizic acid, an anti-viral compound significantly sweeter than sugar.

I think most of the anise used in snus comes from star anise (although I could be wrong)

All 3 have anethole and I think that is what people are tasting when people say they taste similar. Licorice also has glycyrrhizic acid which anise does not have. Licorice is sweeter than just straight anise.

This is a good example of the snus experience to me, I use Grov portions as my go to daily, over 4 rolls now.

I still think Grov Los is sublime.

I absolutely loved Grov Svart for one month, now every time I retry one I rip it out completely disgusted with the Anise taste, used to get a lovly vanilla, yet now just nasty anise, and I blame Gotlands grey for that revulsion.

I still have two rolls in the freezer, my first regret in stocking up.

I don't like Grov Black at all. Too much leather and vanilla notes and I don't like the portion material.
Regular Grov is much much better to me.
