New to Snus - A quick Question

    Hey guys,

I recently picked up a tin of Camel Frost, and quite enjoyed it. I found a store about an hour away that carries the General Snus, so I'm going to for sure head out there to pick some up.

But I was wondering, how different are the Camel Snus ingredients compared to the true swedish stuff?

Also, on average, how much snus do you guys go through a day?

Thanks a bunch! I look forward to trying out the more traditional stuff.

    Welcome to Snuson Wise1

I don't think anyone really knows what is in Camel. Unlike Sweden, there are no rules here.

But the Swedish will be VERY different.

Will take a bit to get used to, so be patient. Takes about 7 -10 days to get acclimated to the salt. So what you taste at first will not be how it tastes in a few weeks. So again, just be a bit patient.

Once you have the General, I recommend you go to Northerner.com and buy their top 10 box, the best introduction to the wide variety of Swedish snus I know.

I guess I go through about half a tin a day, sometimes more, sometimes a bit less

Second the top 10 box. Coming immediately from American to Swedish can be a bit of a ride, so just keep an open mind and it'll be worth it in the end.

        Wise,

As an x-dipper, I do not trust American tobacco at all. The difference between real Swedish snus and the American knock offs is literally like the difference between a Swisher Sweet cigar and a fine hand rolled Cuban (or Maxwell House instant and a cup of Grade A Columbian from a Roasting house).

That said, General mint and wintergreen portions seem more geared towards a Camel type market. Thus I would really recommend you try some of the regular General along with any flavored types you pick up. The classic General comes in both regular and white portions and will give you a better idea of real Swedish snus.

However, before you drive all over creation, you might want to order a sampler box from Buysnus.com, Northerner.com, or Getsnus.com. It will save you on gas, be less expensive per can, and will give you a good sampling of what is out there. IMO this is really the best way to go, especially at first.

As far as how much folks use: a can of los will last me 3-4 days. That may not be much help to you as far as portions go, so I will let our portion folks chime in and give you their count.

Anyway, welcome to the forum and keep us posted on how it goes
When it's my time to go, I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my uncle did....... Not screaming in terror like his passengers

Portions is anywhere between 6-10 a day for me. Usually on the lower end though.

Hello, Wise1, and welcome to the forum.

If you're a smoker, like I was, you might find yourself using a lot more at first. My usage is tapering down now, a little. I was a heavy smoker and have been using snus for about two months and ten days. At the beginning, I probably used 16-20 portions a day, maybe more some days. I'm not exactly sure, because I use the loose snus as well, and I'm just counting each pris as a portion.

There are other reforming smokers on the forum who seem to keep a similar pace. I tried the counting game for a while but it got tedious, and now I save the precious little gray matter I have for other things. Also, I've been sampling and switching between a large variety of snus, which makes it harder to keep track.

If you've been using dip, then I don't know, as that's beyond my realm of experience.

If you've never used tobacco at all, I'll just ask you to seriously consider whether you really want to go down nicotine road.

Edit: to remove possible unintended snark.

swedish snus you may find a bit off putting at first. i think this is pretty universal. though ultimately if you end up sticking with it, you will undoubtedly find it far more pleasing than camels bullsh*t snus. the flavor is more complex and kind of like an acquired taste (imagine being a 15 year old trying whisky for the first time) but for those of us that have made our way into swedish, i think youd have a hard time finding someone who would ever go back to not using it, if that tells you anything about its superiority.

                  Swedish Snus

You have to try General Original Portion. That is the best snus around and very easy to find.

                    Welcome to SnusOn!

I use anywhere between 16 and 24 portions a day, many of which are sterks & extra sterks. But I also smoked like a freight train and have no desire to limit my intake of nicotine, so...

I'll add this: if you want the best idea of what "real" Swedish snus is like, then out of the varieties of General you're apt to find locally, concentrate on General Original Portion, White Portion, and, if you like, lös (loose).

The General Dry Mini Mint is minty, sweet, and small. It's the closest of the five to the US Camel, although you can actually taste some tobacco with these. But the artificial sweetener and the uncomplicated mint flavoring just ruin this for me. It takes away from the snus, in my opinion.

General wintergreen is better than the mini mint, to my taste, as it is not so darn sweet, and is the regular size. Seems a lot of dippers, especially Skoal and skoalalike users, are drawn to this. Not a bad choice if you really like wintergreen.

Thank you all for the great response - really, it's very helpful.

A bit of my past, I never really got into cigarettes, but I smoked Black & Milds for some time, as well as the occasional cigar. I dipped for some time, as well. I enjoyed Skoal Long Cut Cherry the most, as well as numerous other flavors.

I'm glad I found Snus. It's so much more convinient. I'll be heading to the store this upcoming Sunday, and plan to buy quite a variety of Snus. Its a cigar shop that I used to frequent, and I know that they have a refrigerator decently stocked.

As far as ordering online goes, which I'm very interested in, how does shipping tobacco work? I was just curious as to if there was anything special I should know before I order online. I'm from Illinois if that helps any.

                        Thanks so much

                          No, at least not yet.

ONLY advice from ordering from Sweden is do NOT use UPS. No one has ever been hit with customs charges using USPS/Swedish Post. However, UPS another story

I guess if I were you but somehow knew what I know now, I'd start off ordering from getsnus.com and northerner.com, but only Northerner's US warehouse. There's a link you can click on their home page to see what's available. Your timing is really great for this since they just added several new lines. There's not a ton of variety yet, but plenty to get started. Still, Getsnus is probably the best bet, because there's more variety and they're pretty well established, so they've worked out the kinks. Their customer service seems to be good, and their prices are usually among the best.

I guess I should mention clubsnus.com also. ClubSnus is kind of new, but one to keep an eye on, anyway.

Starting off buying General locally (I doubt they'll have anything else) is probably your best move.
