I will not pay anything more than $5.00 for a can of General snus(by me its about 5.50-$6.00 per can and will probably go up if this passes making it $7.00-$8.00). I stopped smoking more for financial reasons and was loving the money savings by using snus at an average of $3.50 per can. If this passes, I'm quitting tobacco since all this crap is getting very expensive now..

    Theres always cheap Longhorn/Timberwolf dip

If anyone was wondering what the state tax on smokeless tobacco is for your state here is a link with 2008 figures.

      http://www.taxfoundation.org/news/show/1858.html

Like Sage will pay an extra 10% of the wholesale price.

Chad would pay an extra 32% of the manufacturer's price.

      TheOneandOnly an extra 37%.

I would pay an extra 17%.

      Massachusetts snusers + 90%

Where as Alabama snusers pay 2 cents per can.

Its all over the board and of course we don't really know what the wholesale or manufacturer prices are. I think the federal tax is 3 cents for chewing tobacco and 9 cents for snuff per unit. I don't know which one snus falls under.

        Your results may vary...

Your source is out of date for the state of Florida.

The 25% of wholesale has been replaced with a $1.00/per ounce tax on smokeless.

Yeh I guess everyone might as well do a google search for their own state tax. This is the most recent comparison chart that I saw.

Current NC state tax tobacco rates:

Pipe Tobacco - $0.1769 per oz
Chewing Tobacco - $0.0315 per ounce
                  Snuff - $$0.0944

I simply couldn't care less if I have to pay taxes on my tobacco. Especially as hard hit and hurting our state coffers are right now. I love this state, I fully support what efforts they are making right now to get through these very hard times. At best, me paying local taxes would add a few bucks to my bi-monthly tax bill.

Certainly not enough to whine about it should things come to that.

** Note, cigarette smokes get screwed in this state. Tobacco taxes on cigarettes are like 1000% worse than they are on any other type of tobacco. Even the taxes on roll-your-own tobacco. $1.5488 per ounce.

So it seems my state leaders DO take into account the relative health benefits of various types of tobacco. Wow, rational leaders, who woulda thunk.

I couldn't help but notice that PA has no taxes on smokeless tobacco. I think I need to make some more friends in PA. 8)

Okay, where in Madison can you buy General. The closest I can find is Rockford Ill.

The tax in Wisconsin is 100% of manufacturer's established list price to distributors. Guess it would be back to rolling my own portions for me. At least it's not by weight.

We still have to pay 6% sales tax.

Yeah, but it's still better than NY taxes.

I remember when NC and OK had the lowest tobacco taxes in the nation...

All of the tobacco taxes have been recently raised. we are just in a very bad spot for money these days, so state doing anything it can to raise money.

I have no issues for the most part with our state leaders. I came from California, so perhaps my standards are just much lower.
