importing snus to alberta (not through mail)

SHORT[er] VERSION: anybody have any idea how much i'm gonna have to pay when i re-enter canada with a bunch of snus? cbsa website sucks. alberta provincinal site may even be worse.

    i have the following:

18 cans of loose (50 grams or less)
7 cans of portions (24 grams each)
    totaling approximately 868 grams
    and approximately $70 CAD

    ---

and now, the longer, detail-ridden, much more annoying version. my initial math to determine the duty was as follows:

    25 cans x $2.8925 excise tax per can = $72.32
    $70 CAD x 5% tariff (sweden's rate, apparently) = $3.50
    $70 CAD x 5% GST = $3.50
    =
    $79.32

(also possibly a $5 processing fee - but not sure if this is for post only)

    ----

now, there is no provincial sales tax in alberta, but it seems i may have made a slight (:roll mistake and omitted provincial tobacco taxes of $.20 per gram. if those are applicable, that would bring my total up dramatically - adding on an additional $173.60!

i've seen conflicting info - cbsa form says having more than 5 containers of tobacco without the canada duty paid stamp is a crime. then elsewhere it gives examples (for the purpose of calculating excise duty) of people bringing importing 10 boxes of tobacco. i also saw that cbsa may or may not collect provincial taxes, depending on the particular province. basically, either the websites are confusing to navigate, or else perhaps i'm just really impatient, but if anybody has first hand experience with this, and can give me an idea of what to expect, that would be much appreciated.

somebody please tell me i'm wrong, and i'm not gonna be billed $250 for $70 worth of snus.

sorry for such a long post!

potting soil? for $170, i'd keister it  haha

i did a bit more searching and was able to find a couple old threads here. i'm now expecting to have to pay that $.20 per gram provincial tobacco tax after all. i should've looked into it more before ordering, i guess - apparently i was spoiled from previous orders (when i lived in california).

lesson learned. will ship direct in small quantities next time and hope it gets through. better than having to declare it in person.

anyways, i'm crossing my fingers that whoever i deal with at the border will screw up and charge me less. but i'm not counting on it. i'll watch and keep my mouth shut, and make sure they don't include the weight of the can in the assessment, or charge me for all 45 or 50 gram tins, as i've got some tins of portions as well. i have a feeling they're probably more thorough than whoever handles mail duty assessments though.

the funny thing is, even if it costs me $250, that's $10 per can - and a 15 gram can of cope snuff is about $13!

hopefully i'm not forgetting any other applicable taxes, lol.

EDIT: oh. my. god. i think it's actually $.30 per gram now, as of last april. i think i'm gonna fwd the package to my parents house and ask them to freeze it. no way i'm paying $340 in taxes for a $70 order.
