You know it's really a matter of personal taste. I really like Granit mini portions and Oomph citrus but I also know that a lot of people don't really care for Oomph. You can also take General Wintergreen for another example. I know that a lot of people love General Wintergreen but I would almost rather have a portion of kitty poo under my lip than General Wintergreen. I would take the approach of just having fun and trying out all the different types you can. I can almost guarantee you will find one or two that you really enjoy. Just from my own observations, I would say that you would be pretty safe starting with Ettan or General Original if you like tobacco taste or General mini mints if you like flavored stuff. Reviews can be helpful as a guide but I wouldn't rely on them completely. There are also several excellent stores that sell sampler packs that let you try out a variety of stuff and that's how I would probably start.

I am not sure if they ship where your at but getsnus.com will send you a General sampler pack if you pay for the postage. You might also drop a line to Jonathan at clubsnus.com as I bet he can put together a sampler for you at a reasonable price.

I went to General's website and they sent me a free sampler (two actually, I reordered cause i didnt get it after a few weeks, and they ended up sending both)

I quit smoking with snus without trying too much. From my experience, just snus and smoke. Because I was snusing I didnt need to smoke as much so my body got used to smoking less. When I would smoke, it started to taste bad again like before I started. I didnt quit instantly because of this, but i naturally began transitioning to snus. I would still smoke every couple days but the less i smoked the less attractive it became. I would recommend letting this happen instead of forcing it if possible. I was a pack a day smoker of ff camel menthol so I was a real smoker. I recently ran out of snus and actually have been using dip until my snus comes in (tomorrow ^_^) because I was turned off to smoking. Dip is pretty bad though, I get a headache everytime I use it. Good luck.

For over 2 years here, I have been giving the exact same advice to people about quitting with snus. I say just don't worry about, do what you want. Smoke if that is what you feel like. eventually, the snus always wins

Yes, I think you guys are right about switching from smoking to snus instantly, very hard to get over that mental aspect of smoking, much harder than nicotine it seems like.

Yesterday I only had 5 cigarettes, which is very very good for me
The snus really helps alot better than american dip for me because I am such a coffee addict lol, and ouch on the gums hehe Hard to dip and drink coffee, but snus and coffee is great. Very glad I decided to try snus and found this forum.

I think someone already posted this, but GES, Onyx and Grov Black are all as dry and have the same sort of feel as a white portion. They certainly have less juice, but more flavor thus making you create you own juice with your slaiva. These will definitely help you in the nicotine department.

I had an onyx with coffee this morning, myself. Now I'm having a Grov white with coffee.

Does anyone know of a weaker portion? Something with 4 or 6 mg of nic? I can't do minis because they just don't feel right (too small). I've been using regular sized portions for so long that I'm conditioned to the size. Of course doubling them up defeats the purpose.

General Silver. I think they have 6mg. And full size. I have not had these myself, and have been curious to try them.

I've been snusing for a year or so now, supplimenting smoking (ducking the Ban, and social situations) but I wonder whether I'm getting the most of the experience, I tried quite a few brands when I started, 'off road', liquerice flavour, and the like, but didn't get on with them.

I like gottenburg rape no 2 and ld white potion, but I'm not keen on stronger snuses..

Would anyone have any recommendations of similar snuses I should try, I shop with northerner.com, and notice favourable reviews for ettan, and since they sent me a free ettan hat with an order once (bit small, but hey, it as free), I should ask about alternatives.

                      Kind regards.
I am not a fan of try out boxes. I know Sagedil will disagree with me on this one but I would personally rather order a selection of my choosing.

Here is my suggested list of snus you need to try. Delete as appropriate if you have already tried it

General White (W) - as an alternative to LD white. The best bergamot snus out there.
General Original Portions (OP) - closer to General lös in flavour. Less bergamot. More citrus
Granit W and Granit OP - I prefer General but this is good clone and good low price alternative

Ettan W - One of my favourite whites. Nice pure tobacco taste. Prefer it to the OPs
Grov W - Ditto. Different enough from Ettan to sit alongside it.

Roda Lacket W - Too sweet for my liking but if you enjoy GR2 then this should be a good choice for you

Gotlandssnus Flader (Green) OP - Tastes like apple and elderflower juice (the one you get at Pret). Awesome and one of my favourites in summer.

Gotlandssnus Yellow OP - Citrus is quite dominant at first but settles into a nice tobacco with citrus flavour after a while. Could probably be lumped in the bergamot based family but very distinct from General etc. Nice full portions that are somewhere between a white portion and original portion in moisture.

Skruf OP - The quality control has been lacking the last couple of times I've ordered (couple of cans in the roll were dry) but apparently it has improved again. Very good bergamot style snus.
Knox OP - Skruf's cheaper sibling

Don't disagree really, just know most folks aren't in a situation to make informed choices. Or worse, think like so many newbies they will only like flavored snus so don't even try non flavored snus. A try out box is just that, gives you a wide range of what Swedish snus can be. So useful I think.

But if someone has definite ideas, of course just order. But still, my advice I think is appropriate for most folks.

Agreed on newbies being exposed to as much as possible and it being appropriate to most people.

I do however have to say that I just don't think the Northerner try out box is all that good - too much duplication (three types of General, two types of GR), starks (which not everyone enjoys when they are new to snus) etc.

The try out boxes also skip over some really great snus (your personal favourite Retro White) and my personal favourite, Gotlands.

Also this forum offers enough advice and guidance for anyone who is new to snus to get as much information as they may need to compile a great first order.

Maybe. I realy haven't paid attention to what is in the Top 10 Box for a while. Kinda why lately I have been pushing the idea of try out boxes in general more than Northerner specifically. Every vendor seems to have their examples of such, and there seems to be some fluidity in what is in some. So let someone pick one that sounds good to them, what I did 3 years ago when I first came to snus long before I found Snuson.

OK, so you made me go look.

                            Northerner Top 10 Box....

                            Snus Type: Portion, White Portion
                            Type: Mixed, Box, Top 10
                            Contents: Thunder Frosted Strong Portion
                            Nick (and Johnny) Original Portion
                            Röda Lacket White Portion
                            Grovsnus Portion
                            Göteborgs Rapé White Portion
                            Catch Eucalyptus White Portion
                            Oomph Citrus/Menthol 6mg
                            Ettan Portion
                            Skruf Stark Portion
                            General Portion

So no, no duplicate brands in there really, just a really decent cross section of whites and regulars, and a basic sterk (Nick&Johny). A super sterk, Thunder Frosted, every Newbies wet dream of a flavored snus (  ) The only one I hate is Eucalyptus, and think Oomph is strange. But *some* folks love those and everyone should at ;east try at least once.

So bleep you, I am taking back what I said at the top and will continue to push the Northerner Top 10 Box. To me, at least, I think it is a great introduction to what snus can be.

I think newbies just shouldn't assume what they will like, especially if they have no idea what snus is, how it tastes, how it feels, how strong it is (nicotine wise). Most smokers certainly are clueless, and most dippers will find that snus is a different animal.

I roughly had an idea that I'd probably like strong unflavored snus (lös or portion or both), but nonetheless my first order contained 5 cans, 1 unflavored strong original portion, 1 unflavored lös, 1 (heavily) flavored lös, 1 tradtionally flavored original miniportion, 1 flavored white portion. All were handpicked from reading other peoples reviews (which indeed can only be a rough guideline, since tastes differ heavily when it comes to snus, but they are a guideline), one can even was a brand that everybody hated but sounded good to me from the flavor description - and became a favorite.

All these 5 cans were usable, I didn't like all the same, but none went in the trash, and afterwards I knew what I like, what I don't like, what's worth to be ordered again, to be checked next, or maybe tried again after some time.

Shorter said: many people who assume that they'll be "dry white flavored miniportion users" (before they try snus for the first time) will turn out to be born unflavored lös-users in reality ... and vice versa! The worst mistake is to make a one-sided first order ... and smoke on, so to speak.

                              Cheers!

You know I am going to have to agree with Sagedil on this one. The Northerner box looks like a nice variety and you are sure to find a few good ones in that selection you will really enjoy. After trying the sampler you can start ordering the few you already know you like and throw in a can of something you may or may not like to try with it. The best part of that sampler is it doesn't have a single can of General Wintergreen!
