Best Before Dates: How important are they?

Hi all, new member here. I've learned a lot about snus thanks to the many posters here and just placed my first mail order on Monday (and received today). Here's my order with "best before" dates:
    • 5-General Mint White 06-15-2010
      5-General White Mini 03-06-2010
      5-General Mini Mint 08-31-2010
      3-Roda Lacket White 06-05-2010

I had a wtf moment when I saw the date on the white minis. Do these dates seem reasonable and typical to you?...i.e., about 3-mos out? And would you be concerned or miffed about the date on the white minis?

FWIW, I had hoped to put in several orders to start a stash of a solid year's worth of the real stuff in the freezer in the event the future of online ordering changes. I just don't want to end up with cans that taste like sawdust many months down the road.

White portions hold their freshness much longer than loose or regular portions. If you were to freeze the snus you are concerned about they would be fine for a year or more.

If you stick them in the freezer, expirations don't mean that much. When I'm storing snus in the freezer for extended periods,I vacuum seal them.Snus can last if put in a freezer for a year if not longer.

You all might have expected this but I am here to post that you should ignore the best by dates and enjoy your snus. Without doing some heavy duty testing on it, all we really know or notice is that they get dryer as they age, unless you freeze or keep them somewhat cool of course then the taste and moisture will last longer as others have said.

My favorite snus until I ran out were some two year old cans of ettan.

Thanks guys. I'll wrap these up and toss 'em in the freezer until needed.

I'll probably get some original portions and possibly some los, too. I guess I just won't be able to store these as long as WPs, though.

FWIW, I hadn't previously realized how much thought went into snusing. Smoking cigs was brainless in comparison.

Is this the the date on the original label for the can or is it a getsnus label? The date is usually posted before the month on the can so if its a factory label your snus is good until June.

Because I've been hoarding, virtually every tin I open is several months old and getting older, as I'm purchasing much faster than I am consuming.

I keep it in the freezer (too lazy to vacuum seal, though I do wrap groups of 5 in Saran Wrap) and I haven't noticed any difference. It's all been perfectly good. At this point I'm reasonably confident that it won't "turn" in a disgusting way like milk or mayonnaise would. At worst, it will just be a little bit less fresh, so I'm not going to worry about it.

While I don't necessarily disagree with what others have said about disregarding the best before dates, this situation has happened to me too.

I think that if you're paying good money it's not unreasonable to expect a fresher product.

Whether you keep it in your own fridge/freezer for months on end is our own choice, but being shipped snus with a such a short expiration seems kinda....lousy.

No, these are the dates on the mfr's label. I don't see another date on the product.

                          Welcome to Snuson rustyrat.

As most others have said, best buy dates are not a huge issue. *Most* retailers won't send out snus after that date (Getsnus in the old days did occasionally). But like alll products distributors have paid for, of course they will send out stuff that is dated later, even if not by much.

Do snus for 3 years, you will get stuff all over the map. In 3 years, it has never been an issue. In 3 years, the snus has always been fine.

Yeah, I mostly don't even read the dates anymore, when a new shipment arrives. No joke.

Snus virtually lasts forever. It's not like certain types of food that go sour or moldy. Nicotine, salt and soda seemingly kill all microbes. The best before date practically only indicates that small nuances of the taste may be different when used past that date.

The worst that ever happened to me was that some cans of Skruf Stark Portions tasted a bit like Lucky Strike when I used them 3 months past the best before date, after I had stored them in the cellar for half a year at around 14°C.

                            Cheers!

It doesn't really have to be a club or a science but I think because it is finally spreading from sweden to more of the world a lot of us see the potential to help smokers, and enjoy new products we didn't used to have the opportunity to try. Or maybe we're just all really bored, but regardless, there is much discussion on snus as this forum proves
